Kelcie Clarke, our media volunteer for the seaon, reports from another memorable weekend at The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT).
The phenomenon of the ‘Vulcan Effect’ is totally gripping the nation this season with yet another show resulting in a complete sell out. RIAT 2015 was a show which many will remember fondly in years to come. The aptly named ‘Spirit of Great Britain’ is dominating the country’s aviation scene. Social media has been full of the images of a series of incredible performances this weekend and of the Farewell to Flight formation flypast with the Royal Air Force Red Arrows.
The massive crowds were left waiting until 14:45 for the much anticipated Vulcan display; thousands filled the crowd line to get the best perspective as XH558 roared along the runway and thrust into what many have said to be, the most spectacular take-off they had seen. No sooner had XH558 left the ground, she powered into her display, causing a stir among the congregation below. There was an air and atmosphere of incredulity and suspense as to which moves the huge aircraft would perform next. As the Red Arrows taxied onto the runway to move into position for take-off, XH558 roared above the runway into a zoom climb which resulted in a beautiful howl and a wing over, moving out of the display circuit to allow the Reds to take off.
The much awaited flypast with the Vulcan and the Red Arrows took place to the background of great anticipation and excitement and this was a very fitting farewell and send off to XH558 from the Royal Air Force. After breaking formation XH558 gracefully landed, streaming her brake chute to the delight of the applauding crowd.
I caught up with Kev Rumens shortly after landing on Saturday, to ask the questions about his breath taking display, which had everyone captivated in the moment.
'The take off was a display take off, I wasn’t permitted to turn below 50ft, so I hung on until 100ft before pulling a hard right’. As for the wing over we were all in awe by this point in the display.
Kev continued ~ ‘I always aim to use 135 degrees of bank in the wing over. It is a little harder to judge after a zoom climb, because of the nose of the aircraft. It’s a lot higher and therefore the horizon is harder to see. On Saturday, I aimed for 135 degrees as normal but in reality I think I ended up around 150 degrees’.
Photographs and videos of the display have had millions of views, and being there and seeing it in real time was an amazing and truly memorable experience. The agility of such a large aircraft was perfectly implemented with a huge credit to the very experienced and talented Kev Rumens, Bill Ramsey and Phil Davies.
Bill Ramsey was in the hot seat for the formation flight with the Red Arrows, fully utilising his highly tuned and excellent skills and professionalism to both ensure that the formation was a huge success and making a massive impact on the spellbound audience. Kev went on to comment that the blessing of the good weather had made the flight a bumpy one, with the thermals created on such a sunny day.

@@chrisbingleyIt’s sad, isn’t it. I think a lot of it stems from WWII. We were really in the shit, and we had to make some major adjustments to get help, and we’re still paying the price now in some respects. But our own politicians haven’t helped, if they could collectively see beyond the next election cycle, we might be in a better place.

@@chrisbingley The aircraft you mentioned were indeed way ahead of their time. I would also add the Hunter and Gnat to your list. Those days live long in my memory as I was a “rigger” during the late sixties and the seventies. There is a brilliant little documentary on KZbin showing The Red Arrows on a rain soaked day. This was in the days when the “Arrows” were less restricted. Incidentally, there was a yellow liveried Gnat at RAF St Athan used for training airmen/women during their mech’s course (I was there!). It had, I think, been one of the “Yellow Jacks” aerobatic team.

Three (almost four) years on I still remember this last display of the Vulcan at RIAT. The plane was undoubtedly the centerpiece of the weekend, and she lived up to all expectations. The pilots gave an incredible spectacle for her final season. I really miss that howl! What an amazing aircraft, like so many other British aircraft of her day, well ahead of her time! Thanks for the fantastic video. Brought back some happy memories.

It brings tears to my eyes too! I cannot believe an engineer whose brain is actually working would ever design this utter piece of crap! The radar cross section is just horrible. The thermal signature is bad and the acoustic signature is off the fekking charts. The range is really bad too. This was supposed to be a bomber - lmfao! Do you see a single country making aircraft that looks as bad as this one? No. Why is that? If it is soooo good they should be lining up to buy them, right? All this crap is now scrap and for very good reasons. The same is true for the Harrier 'jump jet' - yet another violently expensive and useless POC all paid for by the UK tax payers who have f*ck all clue about anything - let alone engineering. aerodynamics, aircraft design and the like ... don't even go into EWS. Have you been inside the cockpit of the Vulcan - I have. There is a very good reason this plane was binned. I have made many systems for many military applications and I worked my ass off and have nothing to show for it. Cost of living, that is what I am told. I am an engineer and I know what is crap and what needs to be binned. I have also taken old stuff and made it less useless.

I first saw one of these bombers at the Paine Field air fair in the 1970's when I was a teenager. Over hearing one of the pilots on the loud speaker some one asked how long it took to cross y the Atlantic Ocean in the Vulcan bomber. The pilot joked about that by referring the ocean as " you mean the.POND ?". it was and still is a beautiful looking bomber The Arvo Vulcan. Paine Field is in Everett Washington.

Magnificent aircraft! Living in New Zealand, I have only had one chance to see one flying, and that was memorable. At the air show held on the Wellington Airport opening day in 1959. In turbulent condtions. A Royal Air Force Avro Vulcan bomber aborted its landing when it touched down short of the runway, rupturing its left main landing gear drag link, the wing attachments and engine fuel lines; the aircraft flew to Ohakea air base where it was stranded for several months being repaired. To a 12 year old boy, it was an amazing sight to see all these aircraft but I didn't expect such a display.

I was watching that too from Seatoun Heights. I also saw one in 1956 when it flew very low over Strathmore Park school. I was out in the playground and my five year old brain thought it was at fifty feet! It must have been very low because many years later I mentioned it to my mother, she remembered it because she was looking down on it. It flew back to London and crashed.

@Daves Jefferis The engineering specification for the Vulcans' flight envelope included the ability to out maneuver the Soviet jet fighters in an air to air intercept at high altitude over enemy territory. Which it could. The USSR had no effective deterrent, the top brass were very concerned about the British V-Force.

I saw a Vulcan do a fly past at Barnes Wallis' funeral in 1979 at Effingham church in Surrey, which was just behind my house. It was a dull day with low cloud and I thought that the flypast would be cancelled, but it came in very low with lights on, flying slowly and astonishingly quietly by any jet's standard and was the more impressive for that, looking dark and huge under the cloud. It must have been well away before it increased power to regain some height as I never heard much noise.

Some say that Vulcan was actually an alien spaceship from 2000 years into the future. It could be true. No plane made by humans could achieve that take off.

Great video, I was about 300 yards further down on crowd right. I was wincing a little as it turned on take-off and lost a little height. I bet the folks in the campsite on the other side were 'puckering' a little too. A great day out, Vulcan will be sorely missed next year. I wont miss getting sunburn though! ;-)

Norman Undercroft As one of those over on Totterdown, I can confirm I had a 'squeaky bum' moment. Superb display though.

Well that confirms my suspicions! Hope the display made up for the 'moment'.I did consider camping there this year but it's ripe for a tragedy if a plane falls out of the sky, low-ish risk but not entirely insignificant. I'll be attending RIAT again next year, they appear to be taking on-board the views of their attendees, i.e. more toilets, food and drink that isn't a total rip-off, left luggage and phone charging facilities etc.

The big bomber, that thought it was a fighter. The agility was born for the need to get airbourne asap in case of nuclear attack on the UK......bombing Russia was a one way mission for the crews.

Is it because of the large area delta wing? I wonder what the actual minimum take off velocity is with no head wind.
