Amazingly there were only 8 years between the maiden flights of The Lancaster and The Vulcan. What an era for aircraft development?

The Vulcan is still one of my favourite aircrafts where technology was leaping massive amounts in a short period of time and that distictive howl sounded like it meant business, which often it's payload meant quite that! The other aircraft which I love is from across the pond and I saw it in my early teens with my late father in a town near where I live. I saw it at the Farnborough air show here in the UK, again another amazing machine. I remember security being tight with the windows of the aircraft being covered.

Delta wings need supersonic speeds? Tell that to Avros, Rolls Royce and the RAF that the Vulcan was supersonic. The sperrin part of the V force? The clue is in the S of sperrin. Mr Handley Page would be most displeased that you should dismiss his Victor from the V bomber trinity.
@paulqueripel3493 Жыл бұрын
And that they showed the Victor as an Avro design. I don't think Avro ever looked at crescent wings.

There are only so many who have seen the likes of the Vulcan, the English Electric, the F104 and the SR71 fly. Soon those memories will be lost, like tears in the rain.

1980s was on my motorbike speeding along cliff top road in North Wales, Thought my engine was about to explode then it went dark . Out of the corner of my eye a Vulcan dropped from above went down just below road level and howled out to sea ! Could do Victor next always thought it was most sinister/sci fi of the 4

For me it was Windermere air show, uk circa 2008. I arrived just in time mid-afternoon at Bowness to see one of these incredible machines fly seemingly straight towards us, low and slow, then go full thrust for a near vertical climb right over our heads. Never will I forget that experience

At the start of the video you referred to Lancasters as having Merlin "double X's, this a misnomer as subsequent Merlin marks were identified in Roman numerals - and the "double X" was actually a Merlin twenty.

-You are mixing up Merlin engines and Spitfire fighters.- There was the Spitfire 21 and the Merlin XX.
@usernamesreprise4068Күн бұрын
@@givenfirstnamefamilyfirstn3935 Please explain to me exactly what I was mixing up ? Spitfire 21's were Griffon powered, the Mk1 Lancaster very briefly used Mk XX's but moved almost immediately to the Mk21 and Mk22's, Mk3 Lancasters used the Mk 28's and Mk38's. the first Merlin used in a Spitfire1a was the 1030 hp Mk 2 all further Mk's up to the Mk19 used the latest Merlin versions availabe up to and including the 1670 hp Packard built Merlin 266.all Mks from then on using Griffons.

@@usernamesreprise4068 Merlin III in the majority of Spitfire Mk Is, Griffons in the Mk XII, XIV, XVIII and the XIX (19) Spitfires and the XV and XVII Sea Spitfires/Seafires. The Merlin XX can indeed be spoken as ‘twenty’. There was a non production Spitfire Mk XX so I fully retract my ‘mixing up’ comment. Did someone say the Spitfire 21 was not Griffon powered? Happy New Year.

The "howl" was not a design feature All Avro bombers were hand-built and so no two ones were the same. Some had the "howl", fortunately.
@peterbackhouse86502 ай бұрын
Apparently the howl was down to the air intakes & speed of air being sucked in under power when accelerating.

Interesting archive footage I've never seen before, but please explain the curious omission of any reference to the Handley-Page Victor which, with the Valiant and Vulcan, was the third British V-bomber!!!! The Victor is shown as a tanker without being named and its crescent wing as an alleged Avro design exercise!!! Why??........ Eh???

What a sight what a noise..sadly a spectacle never to be experienced again.. the last year XH558 flew I managed to see it on 5 occasions. My dad was an aero engine tester at Rolls Royce the Olympus was one of the engines he worked on. Many thanks.

You need to see a Vulcan near a B-52 to see how small it is by comparison.

And a carefully kept secret by the US is that the Vulcan "Nuked"the US twice. It was quite embarrassing for the USAF to see a Vulcan landing at a US airbase after a simulated attack, not once but twice.
@givenfirstnamefamilyfirstn3935Күн бұрын
The Victor was the most advanced of the three, it had an early form of area ruling for lower transsonic drag.

I have many memories of seeing the Vulcan's as i have always lived pretty close to one of our RAF bases.. The last time i actually saw one fly was a few years back at Fairford Air Show.. I think that was at the time meant to have been it's last flight, but i believe it has flown since. Was always my favourite plane, and that howl is truly amazing.. I sure do miss hearing it..

Not wishing to be pedantic but the Sperrin was very quickly abandoned, the other V Bomber was the HP Victor, sadly impeded by politicians
@tenkloosterherman Жыл бұрын
The Victor was the better weightlifter and thus the better tanker. The Vulcan was the better bomber. It Nuked the US twice in simulated attacks.
