Saab’s test pilot André Brännström won the Paul Bowen Trophy for the Best Solo Jet Demonstration at the Royal International Air Tattoo. The winner of the coveted award is chosen from displays flown by air force and test pilots from around the world.

Yes, single engine designs are much more beautiful than twins. The only possible exceptions being the F-14 and Mig 29.

Superb use of energy management combined with a 'seemingly' old school style display that was both graceful and showed the power and agility of this wonderful aircraft. I am glad this display won an award. We saw it on the Sunday too and I said to my son I thought it was a very high class display worthy of a prize! The pilot André Brännström is extremely experienced. He began his career flying the old Saab 35 Draken in the early 90’s. Then transitioned to the 37 Viggen and then finally to the 39 Gripen. Not many pilots in the world has his level of experience.

Such a gorgeous bird. Seems to lose very little energy during high intensity maneuvers. The low speed high alpha pass was sick, as was the negative g turn. Imagine if it had thrust vectoring.

The turns after the high speed pass are nuts. Crazy how quickly it comes around and also maintains speed

Gripen is already software limited from 14G to 9G. Normally pilots can't handle more than 9G! But pilots have the ability to move the stick beyond the normal stop and get 12G for a short while... Instantaneous turn rate: Gripen = 38°/second vs F-22 = 35°/second. Sustained turn rate: Gripen = 29°/second vs F-22 = 28°/second.

@@peetnativeman3955 Exactly. When I saw the Gripen for the first time on an airshow I was so disappointed in the sound, since I was used with the Viggen. The viggen would set the car alarms off in the parking area right after take off :D

Jas 39 Gripen E is the best plane in service at the moment! F22 is extremely expensive to run and maintain, plus it is dubble the weight! Performance, per dollar spent, this plane is truly superior!

For sure. But those are larger more powerful twin engine jets. There’s something to be said for lightweight single engine designs. Can’t really see on video but when you watch these planes live you can appreciate how a smaller lightweight plane just looks… well quicker.

Good filming and not too much zooming. However, I really don't like parts being edited out, the "boring" parts I guess. It's like editing out words from a conversation in a film, you loose context. Other than that, all OK!

Many thanks for the feedback. Sometimes the jets will head out of the display area and not put any dynamic manoeuvres in for 20 seconds or so. It’s a good time to give my arms a shake to get some blood back into them. 🤣💪🏼

Don’t they usually loose one plane per air show, SAAB? At least 2 in Sweden, same pilot no less, one in Thailand etc. Then they turn up at NATO missions such as Libya with the wrong fuel adapters and can’t refuel. Tack men nej tack!

I am from Sweden and i can promise u that the E variant can do much more than this!!! It cant do everything cause of safety and secrets on a fly show. I was not impressed by this, even our old Viggen the plane before Gripen could do the same at shows.
