Rib13 Bass - $35 Squier Affinity P Bass Review

This is a review of a "very used" Squier Affinity P-Bass that I found second-hand for 35 dollars USD.

Yep, my kinda review. Cheap bass, in the skilled hands of a professional. Maybe you could step thru some upgrades. New tuners, pickups, bridge, electronics, etc. It'd make an interesting episode(s).

Bought one for about 100 quid. Same colour as this with the cheap tuners. The plan was to upgrade to a Fender. Thirteen years later I'm still using it. Sounds good, stays in tune and it's light as a feather. Ain't broke, don't fix it and all that...

Thanks Rib. I grew up with very modest means. Mom and dad never bought gear for me. I saved and bought very budget gear. I learned as I went along to maintain and repair things.

Maybe the classic P-Bass sound is always there, regardless of item cost and components, because of the classic split-coil pickup design, scale length and geometry or physics of the pickup placement and construction itself?

I have one of these along with a Classic Vibe 60s p bass, and the affinity one actually plays way better. Just doesn't sound as good, but that's easily remedied.

I have a contemporary Squier Affinity PJ (I have had 2) and one of the old ones from the 2000s. The old one is a much better build. Tuners may be an old fashioned design but guess what: if I leave it there a day, and then pick it up, it is almost in tune. This never happened with the PJ. The neck in the old ones is lacquered. A lot of people do not like it but I find the PJ to be slightly instable, so if that's the sort of wood one has to deal with, better to have the lacquer (the stickines goes away wit a bit of sandpaper). Fretwork? Much better. In fact, it was quite poor in the PJs. I am not sure about the pickups in the old one because they were not stock when I bought it, but I find the PJ's stock pickups quite bad so not sure they can be much worse. Besides, a good pickup replacement for a P could be some $30. Neck width is 40mm, not 42, which I do not like but is actually a sensible compromise for someone who is starting out. Moreover, it would appear from the video that the maple is not as pale as in a new squier (not sure it is age or different wood to start with, in mine it is now a beautiful vintage colour). Obviously, yours may not be as good. If I had to rate mine, paid £125, I would rate it very high for the money.

This video is more about this particular bass...it was pretty abused...the condition of these tuners may have been part of its neglect.....but functionally, once I gave it a little TLC, it wasnt bad: in better condition I may have paid more...but for 35 dollars, it's OK, and it is definitely going to be a usable instrument for the person I'm giving this bass to

@@Rib13Bass sure, that's understood. And it is a great engaging video, like all the others! I may come out as a bit passionate about this. That's mostly because my modern PJs gave me plenty of trouble with QC failures. Unfortunately tuner holes in the old ones are very small, 12.5mm I believe, and if they give problems replacing them would be a pain I believe. I am not aware of good affordable aftermarket tuners that small
