Nothing wrong with an Squier Bass or guitar. It's all in the mind. I played an Squier guitar on live stage for 5 years to crowds ranging from 2K to 13K. Nobody noticed anything wrong, just pure dancing and enjoying live music.

I'm quite happy with my 2020 Squier Affinity p-bass.... it was cheap, but I don't deserve better since I haven't played in 20 years. And it does not seem to have the issues that this one had. In a way, it's better than my old Ibanez, I sold 20 years ago... she was great when I bought it but 5 years of little care left here in a poor state... although visually, she was nicer. Black hardware, showing the natural maple wood grain... but I'm pleasantly surprised with the Squier. I'm having a blast relearning the ropes...

I just got that guitar, a month ago. I'm just starting out, but I knew it sounded like crap. EVERYTHING was high except one saddle. Even the A nut slot. I watched several tutorials, I like yours the best. I set everything to your exact specs, nice and low, new strings, and now she sings beautifully. I suspect that they set everything really high, still playable, but high, so that the strings have less of a chance of wearing into the frets while it's in the box being shipped across oceans. Thanks for your help, Dave, this bass gives me pleasure (and sore fingertips😆) every day.

I have a black on black affinity I picked up earlier this year. First thing I did was get it to a pro for a set up and new strings - he took care of all the shit they missed in the final QC at the factory, including filing down the fret ends. If you ever think of buying an affinity, make getting a pro set up part of the prep process. What you get is a really good playing bass, I though it to be good enough that I got the tweed Fender case for it - cost just about as much as the guitar.

CITES does not ban the trade in rosewood, but it is controlled, and some types are banned. If you want to use it there are constraints. The issue is the documentation, so most manufacturers moved to other materials. The issue with the Chineses is that they use rosewood for making funeral caskets. They are illegally cutting Madagascar rosewood, the best rosewood there is now. The trade of which IS banned under CITES. BTW it is all of the dalburgia family that is controlled, some of which is NOT called rosewood

What's the theory behind playing the harmonic when setting the intonation?
@TheBeadg
@TheBeadg 5 жыл бұрын
The open note and the 12th fret harmonic will always be exactly the same, one octave apart of course... unless there is something seriously wrong with the string. If the 12th fret note does not match the 12th fret harmonic, the saddle needs to be moved to make it so.

I was recently positively surprised by an Affinity JBass and an Affinity Strat. A decade+ ago these guitars were deemed "chopstick wood" quality with my experience also being "Affinity = shitty", maybe now that level of basic and cheap is covered by Bullet series instead because recent Affinities are surprisingly playable instruments. If you don't prefer a high gloss vintage tint neck then just get a good one and it's a reliable, giggable instrument. Put in some decent Alnico pickups and you can record with it. If you look at the price points of these things and especially how cheap you can get them second hand as there's a lot of them, it's just ridiculous. A fine example of a golden age of cheap gear!
@gryzew
@gryzew 5 жыл бұрын
Oh and by the way they recently changed rosewood to indian laurel wood this year. This one is probably still rosewood. Also, CITES is debating letting finished instruments get shipped freely, as the endangerment originates in Chinese furniture, guitar industry is basically innocent victim.

On a lark, I bought a $150 Affinity Tele, brand new shipped to my door in bubble wrap and cardboard. Played unbelievably well right out of the box. I play a lot of chunky 50's LP type necks, and these have a nice small neck profile that still fits in my hand, unlike an Epi neck that is just too thin for me. Solid maple done in a nice satin finish with clean fret ends. I changed the pups, electronics and saddles, threw a leather pickguard on it and it is a fantastic guitar for $350. Fender could easily make high end guitars over there if they chose to.
@gryzew
@gryzew 5 жыл бұрын
@Jim Ford there's Fender Modern Player series, I think now reduced only to the HSS tele, there were a few more contemporary takes on guitars and basses at first. Maybe they reduced the selection cause it wasn't that popular as those are basically Classic Vibes with a Fender logo and a higher price point (also Chinese made, same sticky plasticky thick polyester finish as Squier CV series), but I'm mainly mentioning this to make a point that Fender guitars made in China (Fender Fender, not Squier by Fender) already happened and are still a thing.
@gryzew
@gryzew 5 жыл бұрын
@Kevin I'm personally not crying that CITES forced guitar manufacturers to switch wood species, something new and interesting might come out of this, rather than seeing every Strat or Les Paul being churned out each year with the same exact specs. Indian rosewood is not Brazilian rosewood anyway, "mahogany" is usually an umbrella term for god knows what in cheap guitars: nato, okoume, whatever grows near basically and is mahogany-like. Those guitars already have little in common with what was used in the 50s. Epiphone is silently switching to pau ferro already and I'd gladly check out how a pau ferro Lester feels like. How many exact same Epiphones does the world need to produce? What is really dumb and what should be put to rest by CITES is me wanting to buy a 10 year old $80 used Squier from a different country and me and the seller having to get certification as if we were trading elephant tusks.

I was shopping for guitar woods at one of the largest lumber mills here in Ohio. According to the guy that has been working there over 30 years, they process about 12-14 truckloads of lumber a day. They have permanent sales reps stationed in China and a fair percentage of their business goes there. I've also heard stories of the Chinese writing multi-million dollar checks for an entire years production from smaller mills that may have no choice but to take it if business is bad. This isn't cheap pine structural lumber. It's primarily maple, oak, cherry, ash, poplar, walnut, sycamore. With the exception of Walnut, I can walk in off the street and buy one board of any of those rough sawn 4/4, 6/4, 8/4 for 3-5 USD a board foot. And sometimes a lot less then that. Wholesale for 10's of thousands of BF? Who knows? So yeah, the Chinese are using some nice woods over there. Could be from a tree within an hour drive of your house.

Leo of Red Keep We have seen bridge barrels flip under extreme attack, a parallel setup method can minimize that somewhat. One of my Teles is a six-barrel top loader that constantly threw the high E over until (a quick fix in frustration) I drilled tapped and screwed that little bastard down until having some time to swap the whole bridge. But waiiiit a minute, that one string responded so well, sounded so good, the B G and D got screwed down too. The A and E6 didn't seem to make any difference and really even the D not much. Of course it looks stupid, no one ever noticed. The standard three barrel remains my favourite for Telecasters anyway.
