So, he had to showcase THEIR skills, he had to make them look GREAT... so most of his stuff was to make others look good... and all those others were basically the same guy (a big, good looking, GREEN guy that was basically training to become a star THANKS to Ric Flair... guys like Sting, Lex Lugar, etc.... all of whom, by the way, credit Ric with taking their career to the next level). Not knowing who Flair was had everything to do with the fact that the rest of the world couldn't watch NWA. They did not broadcast NWA worldwide like they did WWF. Anybody who was anyone wrestled in WWF. It's like not knowing who a minor leaguer was since he never played in MLB. You can be great in the minors but you're really no one unless you upstage the MLB (like Hogan and the NWO did for 83 weeks) or you join the big leagues and prove your worth. Flair proved to be a great heel. But he was never able to show he was as big a player as Hogan or Savage.

I rarely disagree with the GOAT but I have to disagree about Randy Savage. Randy Savage was a TREMENDOUS worker. His match with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat in Wrestlemania 3 is arguably the greatest wrestling performance of all time. Randy Savage was a tremendous talent.

When guys start working together, example Hogan and Flair, they work house shows in the beginning. Putting them together immediately in main events at huge pay per views like Wrestlemania, you want to make sure they are in synch and ready to put on their very best match because at mania you don't get a second chance for a money drawing performance. In fact, you could blow the entire storyline or run with a terrible match at one of your biggest pay per views. There were other stars then as well. The Undertaker showed up then and just took off so they put the belt on him with help from Flair also. I know Hogan and Flair ultimately didn't happen at Wrestlemania but that was all that didn't happen from their days in WWE/WWF. That and Vince never had the opportunity to turn Hogan heel after his long Hulkamania run. Vince McMahon is a pretty precise kind of guy. He builds, he does not rush into something at least he didn't then. Now psychology in wrestling is pretty much gone. Stars want to be stars immediately without the build-up without aloting the time it takes. Hurry up and get a run and in the blink of an eye it's all over. Then what's next? If you still have storylines and creativity that you haven't pulled out of your bag of tricks yet and you are still selling out making money don't fix what isn't broken yet. Trend upward not take your best shots and then fall back on blanks.

I suspect one of those reasons he didn't see Savage as a great worker was the fact that he wrote out his matches on paper. At least with Steamboat he did. He didn't "improvise" as you were supposed to. Now Flair and Steamboat? They wrestled each other more than any two wrestlers ever did. The chemistry between those two was second to none. There was no need to script anything out on paper.

Flair and Steamboat also happened in front of 10,000 people whereas Savage vs Steamboat was on the grandest stage in front of 93,000. Savage's preplanned match stole the show and is generally considered the greatest match ever.

I think the reason they didn't go with Flair and Hogan on pay per view was because they were going to save it for WM10. The match needed the proper build. Flair needed a lengthy title run with WWF Championship for about two years, even it wasn't one two year reign, but a sequence of reigns over that two years. Savage vs. Flair at WM8 was correct, WM9 would've been Flair vs. Warrior and then finally WM10 would be Hogan & Flair. Unfortunately there were bad bounces financially for the WWF over that time period, plus Warrior getting fired in 1992 was disasterous for the company. To be honest, I think the House Show matches Hogan and Flair had were a mistake; they should've never had a one on one match until the timing was right.

The interviewer makes a great point about Flair getting more cheers than Hogan and that McMahon did not want anyone taking away from Hogan’s popularity. Jake Roberts said that is why Vince killed his angle with Hogan. People started cheering Jake Roberts. I think it was a mistake as Hogan vs Flair at WrestleMania would have been HUGE since they were the 2 top draws of the 1980’s and were the 2 World Champions. Ric Flair is the greatest wrestler to ever put on the boots and it is possible that he would have to win against Hogan only to have Hogan make a comeback at the next WrestleMania. I doubt that Vince would have wanted Hogan to lose to Flair because Hogan was his number 1 guy. I disagree with Ric Flair about Randy Savage not being a great worker. Randy was one of the top 5 in the business. Watch his match at WrestleMania with Steamboat. That match along with Flair/Steamboat were the 2 greatest matches I have ever seen.

People always go on about Hogan vs Flair at wrestlemania 8, but if that had happened Hogan would have just buried Flair and we would have lost one of the best Wrestlemania matches ever in Flair vs Savage. So I'm glad it didn't happen.
