Q - One concern I have it about pests. I have heard some of the places listed as good to retire in do have garbage pickup issue. Do you know about a pest or rodent problem?

Where there's a lot of people, there are rodants, but it's not much of a deal in Portugal, because the trash isn't in bags on the floor: there are gray trash bins for garbage, yellow trash bins for plastics and blue for paper. In Lisbon each building has one of each. The green one is for glass and it's in the streets and the red ones for batteries are in the street, as well. In Lisbon they collect garbage on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The plastics are collected on Tuesday and Saturday. The paper is on Thursday. You can put each disposables in each bin, at any day and they collect in each given day. As for glss and batteries, Idk when they collect it, but you can put it any day you want.

Ric and I have lived here in Lisbon for over 2 years. I know a few people that have had to deal with roaches. That's out of nearly 60 families that we have in our friends group. Both of those folks lived close or in the downtown tourist area which has more restaurants, more folks littering and older infrastructure. Neither have said anything about rodents. The only thing we've seen in our apartment, and we are in the historic district but outside of the tourist area, are silver fish and baby spiders. Plus here in Lisbon and a lot of the other cities, the major trash bins are underground. The dumpsters are literally underground and the trucks hall them up and dump them. On some of the smaller roads, I saw this in Cachilhas on the other side of the river. Their bins are above ground but they are big huge plastic bins as vervideogiros describes. I have seen 2 roaches since I've been here, literally and one was in the metro it came up from a vent and 1 was late at night on the street downtown. I've seen one dead rodent since I've been here. I've seen no live ones. We were in Brussels for 2 weeks and we saw two rodents run across the sidewalk in front of us. They were mice not rats but still.
