Hey everyone! Firstly sorry I haven’t uploaded in a while ! I’m getting back in to it over here 😊 Second let me know what you think of the new 600mm. I think Nikon offers a great range of long lenses now (yes apart from the one big admission!) Thanks you so much for watching ❤

Nice honesty on the 600 vs 400. I have the 3 big FL lenses and I find the 600 is great workhorse, but the 400 the Swiss army knife. 800 is super specialized and was for a special project. I wish Nikon would look at a 50-1000 style cine servo as those things are incredible ( and incredible price) but the wildlife video prod masterpiece The Z9 is a great video unit and I keep banging on to NPS about how good it is like a broken record

I’d like to see what you think about image degradation with adding a 2.0X TC to the 400 mm f/2.8 Z for an equivalent focal length of 800 mm f/5.6 vs. this 600 mm f/4 with the TC engaged and an equivalent 840 mm focal length. Is it worth the additional $903 USD for 40 mm ( $15,496.95 vs $13,996.95 + $596.95 for TC) ?I mostly shoot small birds in the tropics where I think the low light gathering ability of the f/2.8 might serve me better.
@refuztosay94542 жыл бұрын
First and foremost, thanks for a valuable product review, well crafted and quite helpful. However, there is one aspect of the review that’s missing; availability. I’ve been shooting Nikon from the days of the D70. I have virtually one of every body since then and a huge collection of glass. To say I’m heavily invested in the Nikon system is an understatement. My key focus is wildlife - almost exclusively. I’ve made the transition to Milton mirrorless - trusting the company and the brand to deliver on the platform migration in a reasonable timeline. To cut to the chase I’ve been wholly disappointed. I put my order in for the 400 and 800 z mount the day they were announced. My dealer shuns me when I ask every 3 or 4 months for an eta. Since I’m retired this is actually a big deal for me. I only have so many days where I’m able to traverse the wilderness and handhold big primes or the tripods needed to “get the shot.” I’ve been told it will be about another year until I can pay Nikon for the privilege of having a suitable lens. At the point - I’m face a horrible and unpleasant choice- ditch my exclusive camera brand of the last 30 years and go buy an A1 and a 400 and a 600 - in stock at dealers - or wait. And note my large f mount lenses do not work well on the Z9. For one they turn on the VR motors constantly. So no VR lest I burn out motors that are no longer available for repairs. Sorry for the long complaint - but Nikon’s refusal to invest in adequate production capacity is wearing on me. So one ask - and don’t dodge the question please - what’s the intended production rate for 400 and the 600 - and how does that map to the installed base of f mount versions? Please get on the phone and call Nikon and demand an answer to a reasonable question from a loyal customer. And please don’t insult those of us in this situation- with an response of: know one knows - it’s the chip shortage - global supply chains are tricky…all that is bunk since Sony can put stock in dealers. Nikon knows the answer to this question- they just seem to be unwilling to make it public Thank you for your kind consideration.

Awesome video with Morten, and nice comparisons at the end. BTW, do you agree that the 400 2.8 with TC, looks sharper than the old F600 ? (560vs600) i know it was no direct comparison between these.
@paulkammen97442 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the video, I actually did pre-order the 600 with NPS; birds and wildlife are my obsession, and what was really helpful was the comparison to the 800 6.3. I own that lens along with the 500 PF, and 100-400; currently planning on selling the 800 and 500 likely to defray the cost. My biggest concern was sharpness; would the 600 with the TC engaged at 840mm be as sharp as the 800, and sounds like it will be. I love the 800, but to have two lenses in one basically, and to be able to shoot at f4 in lower light is a real game changer. While bigger and heavier it's certianly lighter than the older Nikon 800 5.6 too.

Thanks for the review! 24:23 I wasn’t expecting that the 600+TC is soooo much better than the native 800PF Prime lens. These are two worlds wrt sharpness and contrast. It’s a pity that you didn’t put in the 800/5.6 lens, too. Based on other reviews that seems to be the very best option for 800mm wrt optical quality … weight is another story 😂

a lovely piece of kit for 5 digit $ lens, just wish this was the 200-600 Z so that the rest of the nikon users can enjoy the Z more. A lens for a small % of the user base over one that benefits a lot of the user base, a bit like waiting on the Z6/7III or the Z8, as there is little chance of a Z9 in the UK, just watching and enjoying great equipment. I love my Z 800mm S lens which is light and easy to carry and even with TCs it is easily handheld. When shooting long I take 2 lenses (100-400, and the 800mm). This gives me 100mm-1,600 mm) range. I don’t mind manually adding a TC when needed. 😊
@starbase2182 жыл бұрын
I think Nikon has a winner here. For those who had a D5 or D6 and then got onto the Z9, but still used the old 600mm with an FTZ, this is enticing with the built-in TC. None of the other manufacturers offer that. The only question for some of those photographers is, what's worth more: the old lens and both kidneys, or this new lens? ;) I do hope that Nikon will now (finally) turn its attention to cheaper telezoom options. This is an area where they currently have nothing. The 200-600 has been on the roadmap for a long time, and a variable-aperture 70-300ish lens or 70-200 f/4 also wouldn't hurt at all. But then I'd also expect Mk III versions of the Z6 and Z7.

Thank you for your insight. Both the 600 and 400 look like wonderful lenses. The professionals must be excited. Unfortunately, I am just an amateur. The cost and weight of these lenses alongside the bulk of a Z9 steers me away. I am currently holding a Z6ii, 24-120, 100-400 along with a D500, 500pf. Love the Z platform, but the cost and bulk of updating the D500,500pf combo is too steep. The A1, 200-600 is getting closer to the top of my list.

Currently going back and forth on the 3 new Z super teles. I love the flexibility of the 400 2.8 but I don’t think I’m willing to pick significantly lower quality at 800. How big is the quality gap of the 400 with the 2x vs the 800 and the 600 with the internal TC?

I have recently got the z600mm and like it so much because of its image quality and sharpness.
