Carole Vera Ellen & Donald O'Conner did a Dance Scene VERY, VERY similar to this in the movie "Call me Madam". A great dancing, singing movie...but the water dance is strikingly so similar, even up to the end where they speed up the music!!! (lol) Here's the clip kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXuZXnx3mLpkmbc
@CarSVernon3 жыл бұрын
@@borninthewrongtime6449 It's similar to a degree, the starting in a ballroom and going outside by the water is the same, but I don't think that dance is as fluid and one of a kind as this one, they even had a much better dance number in the same movie, 'something to dance about'.
@borninthewrongtime64493 жыл бұрын
@@CarSVernon "Something to Dance About" is a delightful piece but it's much more acrobatic, with the stairs and the barrels and his tap and her ballet moves. It really matters not, I love Vera Ellen in anything. Adore & think Donald O'Conner was underrated in Hollywood. Have the upmost respect for Bing Crosby, but Danny Kaye (being the 3rd choice as his partner) was perfect in this role. I love Danny Kaye's body of work. Of course, speaking of dancing, one cannot leave out Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. Both utterly amazing, each different in their own way. I remember everything about the day I first saw this movie when it was in the theaters just before Christmas in 1954. When we went in, it was totally dry outside, but when we left, there was 4 inches of snow! To me this movie has always been magical, and with the two sisters, is it any wonder I fell in love with blondes? Ironically many years later, in Tacoma, WA, I helped a fellow save the remainder of Bing Crosby's items (pipes, toupees, memorabilia, etc.) that were stored in an old warehouse, in the very same city where Bing was born. Those items ended up at Gonzaga University, and were saved from being thrown on an auction block to help create a rocker's tribute in Seattle. Sure glad we got there in time!

There was something very special about that era that we will never see again. My parents met at a dance in the 50s and it was very romantic. Dad said life was more simple then. Wish we could turn the clock back...

My dad introduced me to his love of all Classics. He loved dancing and this was a favorite of his. When he was on his last days I put this on my phone so we could have one more time watching together. Even though he couldn’t talk his hand went up and moved with the music. I now watch and have tears of happiness.

Such a beautiful number - beautiful people dancing beautifully in beautiful clothes to beautiful music - what could be better! Our "artists" today can't duplicate any aspect of this scene - NOT ONE. They should be forced to watch every movie from The Jazz Singer to Ben Hur in 1960 and learn how to make movies that entertain & uplift!

I love watching these two dance together. Danny Kaye might not have had the athleticism of Gene Kelly or the grace and fluidity of Fred Astaire, but he was still a great dancer in his own right and Vera Ellen was AWESOME. And together, they made a kind of magic that's hard to explain, but still a wondrous thing to watch, especially when Vera Ellen was wearing a pretty dress!
@markschildberg16679 жыл бұрын
JoMarieM And remarkably, Danny Kaye had no formal dance training. He just jumped in and did what the choreographer wanted. That he could keep up with Vera Ellen is pretty amazing.

+Mark Schildberg Donald O'Connor was supposed to play the role Danny Kaye did, but I think he either had an accident or was not available for the filming at the last minute. Wikipedia will have the whole story for sure!
@alexpoor24529 жыл бұрын
+Mark Schildberg Yes, further to my other message, this is what Wikepedia says: White Christmas was intended to reunite Crosby and Fred Astaire for their third Irving Berlin showcase musical. Crosby and Astaire had previously co-starred in Holiday Inn(1942) - where the song 'White Christmas' first appeared - and Blue Skies (1946). Astaire declined the project after reading the script[3] and asked to be released from his contract with Paramount.[4] Crosby also left the project shortly thereafter, to spend more time with his sons after the death of his wife, Dixie Lee.[4] Near the end of January 1953, Crosby returned to the project, and Donald O'Connor was signed to replace Astaire.[4] Just before shooting was to begin, O'Connor had to drop out due to illness and was replaced by Danny Kaye, who asked for and received a salary of $200,000 and 10% of the gross.

“He thought the best all-around dancer was Vera-Ellen and the best tapper was Eleanor Powell while Donald O’Connor was the most unsung,” said Patricia Ward Kelly (Gene Kelly’s wife). blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2012/07/24/gene-kellys-widow-doesnt-dance-away-from-his-secrets/ “I think she was the best dancer outside of Peggy Ryan I ever danced with…I know for a fact that Astaire and Kelly truly respected her as a dancer; you can tell from the way they danced with her that they felt she was someone truly special.” -Donald O’Connor’s kind words about Vera-Ellen. “She was a real accomplished dancer, that girl…ballet, tap dancing, anything you wanted to do.” -Fred Astaire “I would look at [Vera-Ellen’s] extensions and laugh[ed] because I could never do that.” -Debbie Reynolds -William Morrow & Co. www.classicpedia.com/2008/11/quotes-from-and-about-lovely-vera-ellen.html
