Camp Rice was the early WWII DTC base for the 5th Armored Division. After the 5th shipped out, Camp Rice was not used again because it was considered too close to where war games occurred. You passed by 3 more DTC camp sites while driving to I-10 at Desert Center. Also passed by Rice Army Airfield site and Freda Army Supply Depot site. The buildings at the shoe fence were Rice School. The burnt foundation seen in the background was the original one-room school house. Some jerk burned it down in the 1990's. There's a small cemetery between the highway and RR tracks near the school site.

If the BLM decides that an old building, like the school, is too unsafe for people to explore/inhabit and isn't "worth" fixing up they've been known to burn them down. It's possible it was a safety thing.

@@MtnBadger Possibly but the last time I saw the school standing, it was in good condition. Only the window glass had been busted out. A blackboard was still on the front (east) wall. And further, the site might still be county property, not BLM.

It's dangerous going camping w/o a gun. You need to be prepared for anything. It's also smart to always run doubles if one of the vehicles get stuck or breaks down. Most people learn this the hard way. Good hand jack & towing chain as well.

You may have been camping on part of Gen. George Patton's Desert Warfare Training Center if you were near Rice. CA. 18 MILLION desert square miles used tho train troops to go fight and defeat Rommel in North Africa. There were MANY division camps and several airfields in the training center. The camps were laid out using rocks to create/outline roads, walkways, assembly areas, etc. A drone flight would be quite interesting. I've flown over the Rice Army Air Field in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 .... and even landed there.
