Rice Harvesting in Japan

Have you ever wondered how rice gets from those waving fields to the store?
I was lucky to catch the harvesting process in action, really cool!

I work for a John Deere dealership, and was just looking at a video of one of our farmers harvesting a field of sweet rice here in California. I was amazed at the difference when I came across your video!

Don't know a lot about rice, but I do know when it is planted its in a large pool of water about 3 inches deep. What I didn't think about or realize is that during harvest the water is gone and it's rather dry.

Wow! Great vid! I always wondered exactly how rice was cultivated because the rice patty fields I see on TV look nothing like the grains of rice I buy at the grocery store. I actually learned something on KZbin. Go figure?

Fit the machine to the work. Japanese and Chinese rice combines must reflect the field they are working. You can actually design a machine too large for the work and loose all the scale of efficiency if the combine must be frequently moved from small patch to small patch. If my hunch is correct the Japanese have a lot of small rice fields inside semi urbanized areas so a large combine would be a major liability.

Phillip Mulligan I wish I knew the make/model/price of that thing. There is a guy in Vermont (Ben Falk) who is into permaculture and eco-designing... Anyway the point is, he grew rice in Vermont, using suntraps and terracing. Built it right into the side of his property (a largish hillside). Pretty damn cool. I live in OH. But I'm going to try my hand at growing rice here too. Best cereal crop ever.

It is most likely a Kibota. I see a lot of small cute hydraulic excavators for use in landscaping and highly confined construction up here in Alberta. There is even an Alberta distributer for these in Canada though I can only guess at there prices. The landscape and foundation restoration contractors really like them.

If there was a way rice or any plant can grow and be harvested in 2 days or sooner, rice wouldn't even be 0.50 for a pound.

RebirthWoWGuild Why would anyone do that? Fields stay green until harvest. Then the straw is collected and done something with. Probably used to make straw rope or mulch or bedding for animals... There are corn fields on the outskirts of my neighborhood. No one sets fire to them, whether accidentally or on purpose... :D Besides, Japanese people are too conscientious to do things like that out of the blue. Unless you're a pyromaniac. And then you probably have a whole lot of things you would rather set on fire.
