To everyone complaining about the man stepping on the rice: the rice was about to be de-shelled, meaning that the outer layer (which came in contact with his foot) would be removed; secondly, before you cook rice, you wash it several times to remove starch; and thirdly, cooking rice involves heating it in boiling water and steaming it under pressure. By the time the rice reaches your plate, it wouldn't matter if the shelled rice had been poured on the floor of a public restroom, the end product would be clean and sterile.

Nowadays with all sorts of grain options, it is understandable to think that but rice has been a sufficient food source in my countries for centuries that it is understandable the amount of effort. I don’t get how some guy just discovered how to make rice, let alone know it was edible and nutritious! I’m not a big fan of rice either but I suppose in more tropical wetland climates they couldn’t grow wheat, rice instead. Absolutely fascinating!

There is no water-borne bacteria's that can survive the process of boiling, steaming or frying. People care more about the filthy hands that touch food, but not the carcinogenic compounds of the chemicals used to destroy the gnats and fungus in the soil.

Rhys Plant actually there is. These bacteria (archaebacteria) are called extremophiles. They survive extreme environments like hot temperatures, freezing temperatures, and extremely toxic environments like sulfur in deep sea vents. I doubt that any potentially deadly bacteria would be on the rice however you should still wash it prior to consumption.
