Rice shortage in Japan? Buying limits on customers? Looks to be more complicated than meets the eye.

I go down to my rice field here in Japan and discuss the latest news surrounding the announcements of buying limits in some major cities.

Early next year i plan to expand my rural Japan cafe to include rescuing stray cats in my area to turn it into a unique Cat Cafe. Any help is very much appreciated.

I was living in Tokyo, on March 11th, 2011 when the big earthquake hit, and let me tell you, ALL the supermarkets and kombini were empty, people bought up all the meats, fruits, vegetables, dairy products.. everything was gone because people were just buying up everything in case there was shortages.. But I would ride my bike to Costco in Kawasaki, and it was life as usual, shelves were stocked, plenty of everything.. mountains of toilet paper.. I take it you and your friends/family won't be missing out on rice.

Compare what you saw to Hurricane Katrina shenanigans for perspective. The Japanese are very cool when most other cultures descend into chaos.

Thanks for the explanations. Here in Chiba shelves have been sparsely filled for the last 2 weeks, with mostly 2kg bags. Doesn't feel like famine is close, but certainly an unusual sight.

There’s a chart indicator called “heikin ashi” which can help spot trends or reversals which I remember using. Btw your rice fields look great!

There was a rice shortage in Japan in the 90s due to a relatively cool summer. Probably because of the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. According to my wife, rice was imported from Thailand and Vietnam at the time so that there was enough rice in the country.

The Japanese don’t like to eat old rice most other cultures eat up to 5 year old stuff. I wonder if they exported surplus in the years up this event?

The average age of a rice farmer in Japan is something like 75 years old It’s not an encouraging number

This will change when rice farmers make bank and people realize they can make much more money than riding a desk. The market always corrects these things and young people here and foreigners looking to move here don’t really understand the opportunities available in rural Japan. This is why I do this content but my little channel won’t make much impact. Big opportunity if you are young and don’t mind working hard.

It's 67 at this point. And not only that, if you just do rice farming but nothing else then you'll make about only 85 USD a year in this country.

@RealRuralJapan It's easy in your head, but there's politics and regulations always involved in the real life, also the disturbance and the interference from the outsiders. Like from the US, Always has been.

@tatsumasa6332 I know of foreigners who have been inheriting rice fields from old guys for the last 15 years and now have a business that makes serious cash. It is only going to get better for those willing to do this.

I wish I knew you liked military history. You are probably my age or older born around 1980 plus or minus a few years and rather like reading the OLD books. Thankfully we have a old man that runs one of those really dusty old bookshops that has all the history books and more you could read close by here and I get my share of books especially when winter comes round. Books piled to the ceiling there from vintage days of old for us old guys with the classical English upbringing I guess?😄 anyways I have a rather large 100x100m garden here in the country with 5 varieties of melons, 3 pepper varieties, green beans, cucumbers, and eggplant. The heat was intense here for three weeks straight without rain and its been another dismal growing season again except for the melons which curiously enough have done extremely well. We did receive quite a bit of rain last week, but herd we are again everyday at 96-98 degrees daily. Later this year I will see how the potatoes and sweet potatoes fare...they did well last year. I'm used to farm work so I always work the odd farm job when in Japan since its easy enough with social media these days to get a day labor job if you are inclined to work. Besides can a man really say he's a man when the old Japanese grandmas clad in all those hefty clothes and hats are out there showing everyone up😄

Even more important is the health effects of Westerners' large amounts when eating rice 🍚 (Carbohydrates) on health. If Japanese start eating more despite the price it be reflected in annual health checks ✔️ they do. Watch this in the future.
