I love solos like this - never lacking on technique, but very sensible and respectful of the tune. It's not just the soloist, but rather the soloist in a certain musical context, presenting his own voice while reminding of what's going on with the rest of the band. Great job, man, short but wonderful solo!

THIS comment, yes! It's a composition played by human beings listening and interacting in a performance setting. The music is memorized, the cues are known and agreed upon, and...the magic of collective interpretation/improvisation happens within that context. For my ears, there is ZERO ego-filler-wanker bullshit happening in this trio, just elegant and mutually supportive musical communication. I hope this trio can gets LOTS of work! You and Larnell always sound good together, too; thank you🙏🏽😋

Rich, I think it would be invaluable is you would take a part of your solo and describe what you were thinking and where you used pentatonics.

So Smooth - Question : Were You Counting Time ? Do You Think Notes Or Patterns ? Did You Know That A Solo Was Coming Your Way ? Go Team Human , Cheers
@richbrownbass5 ай бұрын
Great questions, Travis. I wasn't counting, but I was feeling a half-note pulse (on 1 & 3) for this song. Thinking this way opens things up rhythmically so I don't have to adhere to any particular subdivision. Space is the place! I'm thinking about both in a way. I can see the patterns on the fretboard, but I'm also targeting notes within those patterns melodically in an effort to avoid just playing patterns. I always take the first solo on this song. I try to take my time and think about melodies as opposed to jumping in and playing scales aimlessly. I hope that all makes sense. Go Team Human!
