We took a day trip to the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula in the Hauraki District, to visit Waihi and Karangahake Gorge. Places famous for their gold mining history.
When we arrived in Waihi it was a quick visit to the i-site Gold Discovery Centre before walking across the road to check out the historic Cornish Pumphouse and Martha Mine.
Waihi Gold Discovery Centre
Address: 126 Seddon Street, Waihi 3610
Hours: Mon-Sun 9am-5pm
A short drive later we arrived at Owharoa Falls. A pretty cascading waterfall, popular with locals for swimming in the summertime.
For lunch we ate at Falls Retreat, conveniently located basically right next to Owharoa Falls (just a short drive up the road). Falls Retreat has indoor and outdoor seating with rustic vibes, friendly attentive staff and delicious food that uses a lot of fresh, organic, homegrown ingredients. We were especially in love with our yellowfin tuna entree!
Falls Retreat
Address: 25 Waitawheta Road, Waihi 3682
Hours: Tues-Sun 11am-8:30pm
Mon Closed
Last stop of the day was Karangahake Gorge to do the "windows walk". Such a great trek over suspension bridges, old tramlines, through historic gold mine tunnels that even have glow worms and framed views (the "windows" which are holes blasted out the side of the mountain) that look out over the mining heritage sites and river below.
Just remember to bring a torch for the tunnels but turn them off after you get past the first window and look up to try spot some glow worms :)

😂 that's such a good way to put it.. you're totally right though New Zealand really is one gigantic national park. If you like glow worms there's an entire region called waitomo which has tons of them in underground limestone caverns. Really amazing place yen's been once and I've been quite a few times. That's quite a deep dig from the mining site. I wonder during the rainy season whether all water would go & accumulated there or absorb all into the ground, just my thought hahaa😅

@@PeterandYen it was awesome, with lots of sun and not too crowded. I went with 2 good friends and it was a fun challenge but not as difficult as I expected. I'd definitely do it again!

It's an incredible place ay! Glad you got to visit it when it wasn't so crowded too.. when we went felt a bit like lemmings at one point lol. But that moment when you get to see the lakes from the top and the steam just rising from the ground.. amazing 👌🙂 Have you got another adventure lined up next? 😁

Arrrh...missed you guys again...was there 3 weeks ago. Blueberry farm in Ngatea is a must stop (sneaky icecreams 🍦 😋). Was that a DJI man bag you were wearing near the open cast mine Peter ?...lol...its the only bag my wife has ever seen me wear...she hates carrying my keys, wallet etc etc. Check out my deep south video if you have time ...and stay AWESOME out there. Much luv your easty beachlands neighbours.

Dude! Your trip looked epic. Where are those rocks next to the beach taken?

Hey guys 👦 !....if thats the first beach pics it is Wharariki Beach...near farewell spit at the top of the South Island. There are famous arch rock islands that used to be a windows homescreen pic. Its an epic location...bit of mission to get there as over the Takaka hill...but truly inspiring scenery...low tide is best but what out for the sealions...especially when exploring caves !....wifey almost had a heart attack!...traumatized for life 😜.

I love how they still give you the option to buy a fake gold bar 😂😂 in Poland there was a mine that had a challenge that if you can hold up a real gold bar with just two fingers for 1 minute you get to take it home but I don't think anyone ever managed to do it
@PeterandYen
