rich... first let me say this is a great video and PLEASE do not pay attention to naysayers !! now, in having worked for the DOE in industrial engineering/safety ( with multiple degrees helping me with osha/ansi/nfpa minimally) for 30 plus years i can absolutely say your presentation skills are very good along with great pictures to back your efforts up !!! your discussions on the various subjects are really top notch and you should be commended for your efforts, especially when you look at it not only from an experienced modelers view ( i have been doing this for over 50 years !!!), but also by helping younger hobbyists learn important "stuff" !!! blessings to you, rich !!!

rich... fyi for all our viewers... walthers makes a nice transload facility which is for primarily "dry" products but you could add piping racks and above/below delivery of liquids as well. it has a side by side platform system and the liquids delivery system could use one of the platforms or you could place the liquids area off to the side, which would look pretty nice... about $29 bucks i believe.

I can only speak for Toyota, but no Toyota plant in North America gets anything directly by rail. Steel coils go to a nearby supplier and are slit to the width needed and trucked to the plant. This facility also ships a lot of scrap metal (steel and aluminum) in gondolas. Of course, autoracks are loaded adjacent to the plant. But no parts are delivered by rail. Good views of the plants are available on Google Earth and the vehicle plants are located in Georgetown KY, Princeton IN, Blue Springs MS, San Antonio TX, and Cambridge ON. I am a Trainer for Toyota and have worked for them since 1988 and visit all of the plants with some frequency. I can’t speak for The Big 3 plants, but modern day plants don’t get much by train. Maybe truck frames on flat cars at truck plants, but I can’t think of anything else.

Bulkmatic transloads at the Grand Elk yard. The cylindrical hoppers are flour for pizza dough and the and scrap conveyered to the hoppers, I've been told, is glass.

Unfortunately, this isn't a very good talk. From 16:20 we just get literally 20 examples of "Here's an industry. Why are these cars here? You need to figure that out to model this." That's the exact question I came here to get the answers to. It's not necessary to spend 15 minutes just repeating the question over and over. And then it starts again at 46:45 and, sorry, but I gave up there. Just not enough information.
