"generational government dependency" is a problem caused by histories of racism, exclusion, and the brutality of a laissez-faire capitalist system. All of which this guy is probably ignorant about. His low ideological refinement and little knowledge of the real way policy and politics hurts Americans is definitely due to his lack of higher-education. This is a general U.S. problem, not really unique to him, and one of the many way political conservatives muddy the waters and take advantage of these people. I would say people like him are the reason the bolsheviks, who thought that the working class were unable to see the tyranny under which they toiled because the owners had convinced them that their interests were one and the same, were able to come to power and subvert the revolution. It was apparent, in the peculiar circumstances in russia at that time, that workers could not advance their own interests and only knew how to live as near slaves to capital. They thought a party could take over the role of the owners and rule in the name of the workers until such time as industrialization had created a working class with consciousness of what to do and why.

If you don't look for the answers yourself, you will be following someone else's narrative, left or right. Like most people in the country, I was not taught this in my childhood. It took a mentor to teach me critical thinking as a young adult. Not everyone has this experience, and even I get sucked into emotional populist clickbait and antagonistic narratives all the time. It's becoming an uphill battle to stop reacting and be a proactive thinker. We are ALL confused, because the official answers are all becoming obvious bullshit. What always got me confused about liberals and even turned me off to them completely is how they would say that they are against corporate greed of outsourcing jobs to foreign workers but be perfectly okay with that same corporate greed of companies bringing in foreign workers to replace American workers. They will defend lazy people who are milking the system ( yes there are some) but if their narrative is for open borders and unlimited immigration they will call Americans lazy and say that they don’t want to work. They want it both ways. Michael Moore is a perfect example of that. I hear liberals making those same arguments for hiring illegals for construction in Florida or things will cost so much more and hurt the average workers who will have to pay more. When they were arguing for fast food workers to make a livable wage they said that prices wouldn’t have to go up . They will also say that no one needs to own several properties but will make exceptions when it comes to politicians and celebrities who they like. Doesn’t matter what kind of carbon footprints they have as long as they share the same beliefs.

Life isn't politics, politics is life For anyone that might be confused by this saying. One doesn't need to spend their entire life following politics but whether one likes it or not politics drives literally every single aspect of ones life. Ignorance to politics does not change, that knowledge to politics does not change that. The only thing that being educated on politics changes is the aim, knowing who's actually to blame and where to place ones ire, knowing where and to whom the airing of ones grievances should be directed towards. In my opinion, this mans ignorance to politics is what has lead to his clear aimless scattershot of frustration

@@Aard-Vark exactly my point. Thanks for agreeing. Whether someone is educated in politics or not it doesn't change the fact that politics affects every single aspect of our lives. Being educated on politics or not doesn't change the fact that we are all in the same boat being fucked over by a system that's solely setup to benefit the rich and powerful. Being educated on politics just arms you with the knowledge you need so you can look up and focus your aim, your ire and your grievances at the correct people rather than aiming at the powerless as well as the powerful. His song is both attacking regular people as well as wording support for regular people because again, in my opinion, he's clearly just pulling scattershot. I'm a powerless poor person on social security. For anyone to believe that I'm as much of a drain on our system as the powerful wealthy people who skirt regulation, who don't pay their proper share of taxes, is absurd. I empathise completely with this guys confusion, I’m from the UK so have a slightly different perspective.I have a deep distrust and hatred of our government, they have fucked us over time and again and it’s blatant they don’t give a fuck about the working class, breaking down our rights etc etc, But I love and appreciate the NHS! With regards the the welfare queen thing, I think most people understand that the majority of people receiving benefits are in need of them. That being said when I was growing up with my younger sister, being raised by a single mother who is a nurse and worked her ass off, across the street there was another single mother who did not work (despite being capable) and lived off benefits. Now is it a good thing that she had that to fall back on so her child didn’t suffer? Of course! But is it frustrating even as a child to see your mum work so hard, and yet live the same quality of life as someone on benefits? Hell yes it is. I think this confusion is justified.

A lot of normie working class people have a problem with welfare recipients. It’s not really about “wasting” taxpayer money, either. It’s a moral thing. “Working overtime for bullshit pay” and scraping by without a “handout” is virtuous, but collecting welfare (often while working a job that doesn’t pay enough) is somehow a mark of bad character. Another aspect to this problem is means-testing. A lot of people, particularly single-parent families, rely on programs like TANF, SNAP, and Medicaid. If their income is too high, they lose their benefits, but usually, that income won’t be enough. People shouldn’t have to choose between making a slightly higher amount of money or losing their safety net.

Why on earth has that guy to pick a side if he never really thought or cared about politics the way Kyle does? Because a bunch of idiots used his song? The left really needs to understand that they are in a even worse bubble (because smaller and more elite) than the right. That guy works and makes music, he has most likely no actual opinion founded in facts on any of those policies. That's why direct democracy will never work, most people don't know, don't understand and don't really care. and people are just like companies, they say yes to everything that helps them and most don't care from whom it is taken as long as they get away with it., so guess what his positions are. Maybe it’s because I live in a different country (UK) but I can get healthy food (fruit, veg, spices, herbs, milk, cereal, bread, tuna, cheese etc) really cheap at my local Aldi. Some of which are less expensive than the junk food. Probably depends on where you live but I’ve always been hesitant to jump entirely on the “Junk food is more expensive than healthy food” argument. Imo, it can partly (not entirely) be down to people being too lazy to make their own healthy meals which can be done but takes longer whereas Mcdonalds is called fast food for a reason. It only takes twenty minutes to make a tuna pasta dish and even less to make boiled eggs with toast soldiers, and there are some meals where the boiled water, the oven, etc is doing most of the work for you. And if you take the time to read ingredients labels, you and your family will absolutely benefit from it health wise in the long run. Exercise can also be free and you don’t need a fancy gym membership. For some, their issue isn’t about junk food vs healthy food but more about responsible budgeting and taking the time to make meals. Sometimes the “oh you can afford to buy all the latest gear but can’t find the money for healthy food” argument is a legit one to use. KZbin is free too so you can write down recipes and learn how to make the dishes. And as someone who has worked in a convenience store, a lot of the same people complaining about food prices happily hand over a lot of money to get five large packs of cigarettes. Again, this isn’t the case for everyone. I get the argument of “junk food is more expensive” if you don’t have a nearby place where food is cheap then sure but people risk taking away the agency of many.

I don’t know how fasting could lower the cost of food though. I guess what I’m saying is that it’s difficult to have sympathy for Tiffany when she will complain about not being able to afford stuff but can find enough to party and eat out all the time and spend money on stuff she could probably get and do for free. He represents the much-vaunted "independent" voters, where "independent" is almost a euphemism for "political ignoramus". But those are EXACTLY the people we have to reach, and they are very reachable if we don't just shit all over them for not knowing all the things we know.

Oliver Anthony, "Rich Men of Richmond" Lyrics: I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day Overtime hours for bullshit pay So I can sit out here and waste my life away Drag back home and drown my troubles away. Pre-Chorus: It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to For people like me and people like you Wish I could just wake up and it not be true But it is, oh, it is. Chorus: Livin' in the new world With an old soul These rich men north of Richmond Lord knows they all just wanna have total control Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do And they don't think you know, but I know that you do 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond. I wish politicians would look out for miners And not just minors on an island somewhere Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't got nothin' to eat And the obese milkin' welfare. Well, God, if you're 5-foot-3 and you're 300 pounds Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground 'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down. Repeat Pre-Chorus Repeat Chorus I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day Overtime hours for bullshit pay.

I think he is quite smart. And it must be ok to not be ideologically versed, just sing about your own experiences. This song is about what he sees around him, and I guess he is not much around the CEOs and tax dodgers using loopholes or whatever you mean he should have sung about. It must be irritating to have to go to work for a little salary and try to make a living, and people who do not try very hard are may be better off. I also find it aggravating - to use his own words - that you can't see the big idea behind this song. I guess that when he sings about working for bullshit pay, and not having a life, that is in fact a critic of his boss and the rich guys who run his workplace. I find you are a bit disconnected from the people you are supposed to defend here. He has been working his ass off for years, in addition to being an addict for those years, so I guess he is excused that he has not thought about all those problems you are mentioning. And politics do not have to be about choosing a team and having an opinion about all kind of things that are not what you are involved in in your daily life - it can also be about seeing the problems around you and singing about them, without necessary having the solution. I think he is advocating for local self determination and people being able to take more decisions for themselves.

If they/you know that's not true why are you implying/stating that it is? And gaslighting (to use an overused term) working class people who criticise working class people? It's just inane pearl clutching, of the type woke neoliberals constantly deploy to silence working class people. Working class people generally hate handouts and take pride in earning their way. You'll never sell "nobody is responsible for their actions, everything is the fault of the rich" to them. And the solution to obesity isn't "mental health funding", that's another tired university class go-to. Most mental health problems are material problems. Corporations churning out poison and calling it food is one of the untapped scandals of our time. Not to mention the bombardment of advertising that is inflicted on us and our children for it, from before we can walk and talk. 99% of our food is stuffed with an infinite array of toxins, refined sugar, salt etc. It isn't even food.@@traceytorrey924

Kyle fundamentally misunderstands the point he is making. He is saying that you have people who have nothing to eat that the government cannot assist it seems while you have obesity issues using their benefits to go make that problem worse. He is not even arguing for a reduction in aid funds. Just a better practical application of those funds to get them everywhere they need to go and cut off the parts that do not need to be funded so we can and not increase the tax burden on the American people.

And when that comes to voting, the fiscal side normally wins because they don't want their own money going into helping any liberal issues (school lunch, universal college, universal healthcare, universal PreK, etc). It's the NIMBY philosophy: "I support it, as long as it doesn't affect my life."

I said that the Republicans have NEVER supported working people and if he could show me one law they have passed to help working people, I would listen to him. He couldn't of course. Kyle seems pretty mad at some yokel that wrote a song and got famous for it. It seems fairly obvious that he wasn't expecting it to get heard the way it has so taking a deep dive on the political message is probably a waste of time because it wasnt deep in the first place. The guy basically doesn't like the current situation he sees and the people that are supposed to fix it aren't. The welfare lines are like a quarter of the song, so he doesn't like the way welfare works. Why would you expect a solution to political ills in a two and a half minute song.

I'm an Oliver Anthony fan. Just a warning. I think Kyle and Krystal are both wrong on their takes of this guy. They're both demanding that he be some sort of ideologically consistent and thoroughly political person. That's not who he is. But, he literally named his song "Rich Men North of Richmond", and all you both can talk about is how he complained about fat people. Seems like he's looking in the right direction to place blame. Is he missing the corporate elites? Yes. Is he writing about ordinary peoples' problems, also yes. Take your wins guys. And most importantly, this man's music is resonating with so many people. So many. There's your coalition. Capitalize on this momentum instead of picking at it. I'd be screaming to the hilltops about how your ideology benefits working class people more than the Dem and Rep gangs that most people are tied to. I feel like you're both missing such an opportunity to speak directly to the people you need to push for real change instead of just crusading on KZbin.

The vast majority of people on welfare still work. If you take every single welfare recipient and every case of welfare fraud there has ever been and put it in a pot, it's still pennies in comparison to the sums of money funnelled into off-shore tax havens and straight into the pockets of the already obscenely wealthy. People on welfare *are* part of the working class. And even if some fleece the gov't for a few thousand bucks, who gives a shit? It's literally a piss in the Atlantic in comparison to the true parasites of our society.

I think what we're seeing is the effect of people now trying to converse after years of being within echo chambers. Try to talk to people and they all seem everywhere on so many things and a lot of it doesn't seem consistent. Which is fine, not being consistent doesn't mean their views are wrong. He is under no obligation to fit into a specific political tribe or have a coherent philosophy. He is popular because people hear enough of their own sentiments in his song. @@michaelarmijo2752 I tend to think people are very capable of convincing themselves that their opinion equals the truth. With people whose wallet is tied to their following the temptations of 'grifting' and 'audience capture' always loom large and do factor into their judgment to some degree. I think Kyle is sincere and principled in his attempt to not get captured by these things but I also think people are blind to their own most deeply encoded biases. When you're someone like Kyle and you repeat your political convictions over and over again, you make it your identity. I think over the years he narrowed his view of what he thinks is acceptable for others to think. In this video, he breezes past everything he agrees with in the lyrics to go and focus on the parts he has a problem with. He is looking to judge it rather than to try and understand it. I think it's a shame because I think Kyle is a good and reasonable guy and he could use his platform more positively. He blamed the singer for doing little more than complaining but I feel that is what he is often doing now. We need bridge builders.
