Pensions weren't killed off by Social Security. They were killed off by large corporations lobbying Congress to create the 401(k) in 1978, decades after the start of Social Security. Around 50% of workers had defined benefit plans in the 1970s, to only about 10% today. By switching from "defined _benefit"_ plans to "defined _contribution"_ plans, the companies passed on all the investment risks to the workers/retirees; whereas before, if there was a market crash while you were working, the company would still have been on the hook for the pension amount it promised when you retired.

The politicians reversed the Glass-Steagall Act. The politicians are working for the banking fraud criminals. "Tax cuts and deregulations". Massive arrest should come with every bank bailout. And drop the bailout part. Because they are all in jail. And arrest everyone involved in trillions of dollars in defict spending. AKA stealing. The other thing Glen Beck types often don’t consider is that when you get paid really well for your work, it’s exponentially easier to work harder and longer hours. Consider the difference of going to work for a full 8 hour day at $20/hour ($160 gross), versus making $200/hour ($1600/8 hour day). Then, if you know that staying a few hours later you’ll make an extra $600, it ain’t hard to stay later. You don’t need to get home to do laundry, mow the lawn, cook a crummy dinner, etc. No, you can afford to people to do those things and eliminate those stresses. Then with your free time, you have plenty of money to take a proper vacation, afford your hobbies, improve the house, eat nice dinners, and enjoy yourself without the constant stresses of money.

The Biblical example of retirement is found in Numbers 4 where the tabernacle workers worked from 25-50 years old and then they were to retire from service. BTW, I did think that I'd work forever and then got cancer in my 50s and was permanently disabled from treatment (your body doesn't work as well when they remove organs). And I didn't have a physical job. Those with physical jobs can get work-related injuries; sometimes permanent injuries. But there's also wear and tear that result in smaller injuries but injuries nonetheless.

100% spot on. And it´s funny because that is how the slave system works. So now a fat white man tells other white people that they are slaves on a corporate plantation. Basically when blacks were freed, rich white people said, we have no other choice than make everyone slaves now, darn it. Fun fact. Thom Hartmann made a video explaining how the rich tried to dismantle the republic and turn it into a corporation 4 times. We are now living in the fourth attempt. Mission accomplished. He also wrote a book about it. He has a youtube channel. worth a watch

The real defintion of retirement should be "financial independence", which means you have found some way of living without having to continue to work. You can still continue to do whatever you want, including work if you want. My Dad is 70 years old and stuck in a power chair. He's had two strokes and he's always been bad at managing his money. He is LUCKY that he started a work-from-home business in 2010 that he can continue to do. It makes me extremely sad to imagine what his life would be like if he didn't have that, and that is the situation that so many seniors find themselves in. It is shameful. I'm a writer (both a sports writer and a novelist) and a SPED teacher. I love those jobs. But I also used to manage a gas station. That was a dreadful existence...and people who should have been entitled to retire and enjoy life in their twilight years worked under me. It's bullshit to believe that they shouldn't have been able to retire just because they were poor and social security wasn't fucking paying the bills.

7:01-7:41 Let me guess, people like Glen Beck would say _then just have an IRA,_ or _invest in X or Y stock/index._ Did they forget about the (late) Bernie Madoff?! I think so! And yes, I agree with 8:52. Not only eliminate the cap, but every fine collected from employers (eg. like _wage theft_ fines) should be also added on to the SSA fund.

So sick of wealthy people with kush jobs, who likely don't shop for their own groceries, cook their own meals, wash their dishes, mow their lawn, clean their house, make their own beds, take out their own garbage, wash their laundry, help their kids with schoolwork, do minor repairs around the house and vehicle, ect..., pointing fingers calling struggling workers lazy.

I started working at my company in 1988 and I will be starting a defined benefit pension next year. Obviously, defined benefit pension did not end in 1965 when Medicare began as that was 23 years BEFORE I started employment from the company from which I retired. There are millions of folks with defined benefit pensions who were not yet working in 1965.

Janitors, auto repair technicians, sanitation workers never got a gold watch, regardless of what company they worked for at any time in history. These people and others are the ones that having government backed retirement is for. And this is why rich people like Glenn Beck's social security payments will help those.

1:30: It's actually quite likely that Hebrew does have a word for 'computer'. The French word for for computer is actually thousands of years old, from latin: Ordinateur, or Ordinator, in English. Also Hebrew, like every ancient language, has a word for Tablet, Windows and Macintosh.

I think the key fact about what Glenn and Kyle do is not that they talk into a microphone, it's that they are their own bosses. No one is riding them to do more, work harder, or work longer hours. They get to do what they want to do and nothing more.

I used to be a libertarian. Yes, I'm embarrassed. Part of the appeal of libertarianism is that you get to think that you're the little guy fighting for freedom. Another part for a lot of libertarians is that you get to confirm your own biases and congratulate yourself on being a free thinker without the hassle of intellectual curiosity or taking the time to look anything up. A lot of self proclaimed libertarians genuinely believe that before Social Security and Medicare older Americans simply had enough money to pay for their expenses and medical bills. Why do libertarians believe this? Well, society existed and we were all eventually born so it must have worked out, right? There is no desire to actually look into the conditions of older Americans prior to these programs. And we can just assume that everyone would have invested their money privately and paid the bills better on their own because that is the libertarian promise. There's no room to discuss the possibility that some people don't earn enough money to save it or that some people have more medical bills through no fault of their own that they could not have anticipated. And there's definitely no room to discuss the possibility that someone might become disabled or that some people might be discriminated against. There's there's absolutely no room to discuss the idea that employers (even those competing in the magical free market) might simply use their employees until they're broken and then kick them out without any lasting benefit.
