I first met Rich in 83. He played this song at a camp in Michigan. To this day it is still my life's anthem. I wish over and over that I still had the recording of the first time I heard this. His way of talking while playing the piano just moved me to the core. And he went out like Elijah.

Jon, do you know anything about a song called “Michigan” that Rich wrote and sang early in his career? It included the line “And I never was warmer than I was that winter up in Michigan.“

It’s such a beautiful theologically rich song! I have never heard it on the radio. How blessed you were to see him in person! I grew up in the 80’s but wasn’t saved until 2009. Never even heard of him until I saw “Ragamuffin” about 4 years ago. Love his song “Creed”. Third day did a great re make of it in honor of him🙏 😇

My favorite song of his: Ponder this lyric: "it won't break my heart to say goodbye". Not selfish, but the heartaches of this world will be nothing compared to being with Him in glory.

Wow, this was recorded only 4 months after Keith Green died. I wonder if that was ever on his mind when he sang this. It's not as though they were unaware of each other back then, Rich did record a cover of Keith's "You Are The One" for the tribute album released about a month after this recording. They looked so similar too, up there commanding the stage needing nothing but keys and a microphone... It seems Heaven holds the better choir than what we're left with here these days.

December 8, 1980 Rich's grandmother dies on this day as does John Lennon, who was shot and killed in New York City. Rich Mullins, provoked by the death of Lennon and his grandmother, writes "Elijah." Rich: "My favorite song that I've ever written is 'Elijah.' It was like another breakthrough. I wrote it around the time when John Lennon was shot. He was a big hero of mine, and my great-grandma died about the same time. I began thinking about the influence both of those people had on my life, and they were dead. These two people would never know the impact they had on me; John Lennon I'm sure wouldn't care to know, but my great-grandma, I never got to tell her. But then I realized I don't have to tell her. She didn't do what she did to have some kind of an impact on me, she did what she did because that's who she was." "And I'm going to be dead someday too. That's the first song where I forced myself to dig under a lot of the cliches of the Christian faith. I wrote a song that said, 'You know, someday I'm going to die, and I wanna die good.' Prior to that I would have tended to write, 'Someday I'm going to die and I will be resurrected,' which I also believe." (www.audiori.net/richmullins/timeline19551985.html)

I had a dream the other night and Rich was in it. The void I still have after losing Rich is big. He looked like he used to look. Cut off jeans, white t-shirt, tanned and long hair. He was telling me in the dream that "God has given you plenty of rest since you left the road. It's time to pick it up again". I am now struggling to seek God and see if we are supposed to sell everything and go back on the road. It was an awesome dream. Love you bro. See you in heaven.

I still can't recognize Rich everytime I see this video, lol, must be the rare full beard. I love Rich Mullins & I love this song, every version he has ever sung. Rich KNEW God BETTER than anyone I've ever met. Thanks Rich for adding so much Joy + Understanding to my life: "It won't break my heart to say Goodbye" - Hoping to meet you face-to-face (figuratively speaking) in heaven, soon. I love you & love God, so much. And I especially love watching YOU love God + Your Neighbors, in everything you did + said + sang...

I'm GLAD we are all alive here on earth, not because my life has been a slice of heaven in recent years but rather a living hell...Rich's music, lyrics and thoughts helped get me through it (and similar people living + obedient to God + Jesus FIRST) by always pointing me in the direction of God, =Doing GOOD+RIGHT. Nope, I rejected the path of decadence, despite being homeless/hungry/tortured/cold...And although the past 4 years my loss of spirit drew me more to Rich's positive/hopeful songs (Color Green, Carry On, Verge of a Miracle, etc. ) when I reached the lowest point I could ever be, and was faced battling, to literally stay alive due to the evil actions of a devil worshipping, Christian church in disguise, what God + Jesus Wants/ Needs + Wants from us all RIGHT NOW is to be "GLAD" that we are blessed with his love, compassion, and forgiveness (eternal life)...For me both this song and freedom of speech has taken on a whole new meaning..Yep, my body and spirit got beat-up really bad (sadly it won't be surprising if I enter heaven younger than I could/should have) But "I'll be going out like Elijah on a chariot of fire" while belonging to God's Army, Because I am now GLAD I was put through hell, to be mad enough to force myself to have a little more fuel, to be GLAD= GOD'S LIAISON AND ADVOCATE AGAINST DECADENCE! Hope you join me. Thanks:) Summary: Time has come to EXPOSE + CONQUER our "decadent society". All of them 1 by 1, and particularly those decadent who distort the truth and make up lies like 'freedom of speech' to fuel their evil. (You know the Cathy Griffin types + those who ban speaking about God's love in public. When the decadent are defeated, trust me, like the birds in their nests and the foxes in their dens, no man will ever again have nowhere to rest his weary head or fill his hungry stomach, because human COMPASSION, Caring + Concern for his neighbors + community will return... And we all will be GLAD we are safe, loved, belong and never really were ever alone. If you too are GLAD (against Decadence) and feel fueled by God's love and comfort, to care enough about the GOOD +SAFE well-being of your neighbors + society, please let me know. Because there's still a very slight possibility, that I've been beaten up too bad, and am kinda experiencing a fantasy (not real) instead of the obvious present in every day of any homeless, hungry, ill or otherwise compromised person (traumatized by bad and evil for a prolonged time period)..You know, those times in yoyr luve yoy've been served a whole lot more 'slices of hell' than 'slices of heaven'...I need to keep believing that when God gave human's a heart and emotions, ABD A CONSCIENCE it assured they would always have somebody to take care of them and help/assist if or whenever they were unable. I hope I'm right, otherwise can somebody point me to where my nest and earthly food is. ----And if one single person tells me they trust in God because our government social service agencies provides for those in need... (the MOST decadent group of people known to mankind= politicians + government) and those in existence solely based on taxpayer funds/greed/power/corruption...IDK...But hope after 55 years trying to figure out this world + God, I've always been right that both LOVE and GOOD CAN CONQUER ALL. And evil really never was winning at anything at all, they (like Kathy Griffin) are just really good at attracting alot of attention (needed for themselves because they lack the normal things, like a compassionate heart, to keep themselves going in a healthy way...Thanks for your time + interest. Gail Kathryn One at Yahoo who hopes to spread the word GLAD, before I go to Heaven. (...Against Decadence). TTYL. P.S. Rich, I love you more and more every day, almost 20 years you've been my musical angel from heaven. Thank you for always keeping me ob God's side, making me feel like I belong, even when those evil (decadent) people made me feel Invisible and a Nobody. You've straightened out my paths, always bringing me quickly back to God, and you would be proud of me now, cause I think I can finally do it (find God's love and complete faith) all on my own. Look forward to singing next to you some day :)

Me too. *Hugs*. I found out right after the wreck that he was gone - it was so weird, a stranger e-mailed me, i never found out who - and told me, before most of Rich's friends even knew. i ran to my Mom (i was 28, & so broken) and i just remember crying and saying "HOW can i do this without him?!". (OK, crying again). But i have met so many friends and amazing teachers and learned more through the years because of Rich. He definitely was God's here - he's gotta be lovin' heaven sooooo much. :)

Before you are quick to Judge another fellow mans eternal position, understand that you will be judged as you judge. God is the ultimate judge. I promise you there are many who call themselves "Catholic" who do not now Christ, and will not enter the kingdom. And there are some who do not call themselves "Catholic", or partake of the physical Eucharist, who will indeed, be saved. Our God is a God of grace, and mercy. You don't help anybody by condemning people as if you were the Judge.

Actually, Rich died on September 19, 1997, quite a few years after this concert. The car accident was not a fiery crash; rather, when the jeep in which he was riding rolled over, Rich was ejected and hit by a semi. He was killed instantly, though, by the truck.

Away from me, you evildoers!’" Christ came to offer hope. There will be many in the kingdom of heaven who have never physically eaten the Eucharist. With all due respect, sir, because we have salvation by grace through faith, we can rest assured that Rich Mullins is in the presence of Christ in heaven at this very moment. Luther and Calvin were only unearthing Augustine's correct exegesis of Paul when they taught us the truth about grace. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9; confer Romans and Galatians).
