This is so inspirational! I also remember feeling the weighty significance of Crazy Rich Asians after I had finished the last page. It was so mindblowing and freaking awesome to read about sexy Asian characters in English. The trilogy has given me, an Asian American girl, confidence, and I recommend it to all my Asian girlfriends. Thank you Kevin Kwan!!!! We love you

12:39, but the book is fictional, only exists in Kevin's mind. The Mansion yard and property was green screened. Asians are not oppressed by Hollywood. They work for mafias, cartels and political regimes in real life. USA has given innumerable acting roles to Asians but some people just aren't grateful. There's no such thing as racism.

And i'm curious about who will played Astrid? i admired her so much, she has a great personality, such an elegant lady.. :)

Avid reader. I read Crazy Rich Asians when it first came out and was mesmerized by the descriptions of where these people lived, and how they lived. Loved the book. Appreciated Kevin including what certain phrases meant, explaining to us what he considered things we wouldn't know about - it was educational, as well as highly entertaining. When I found out a movie was being made, I repurchased a copy of Crazy Rich Asians, and discovered two more books had been written in this series. I bought all three, read them one after the other, and am so excited to see the movie when it comes out in August. I don't go to the theater very often. Maybe once or twice a year. I wouldn't miss this for the world! Thank you, Kevin, for this wonderful series.

Finally someone showcasing that part of Asia in an honest way. I was born and raised there and moved to the states as an adult and grew up with some crazy rich friends back home and I can vouch for these bogus things happening over there to people with money. Like I remember one friend’s mom would crave for some good espresso and would literally asked her husband to fly to France or Italy to have one. Might sound like a joke to some but it actually happens, like it’s the most normal thing to do. Another friend’s dad bought a mansion in front of their house in a very affluent subdivision just to tear it down and use it as a parking garage of his luxury car collection... I know it’s crazy and shallow but that’s just Asia for you. When you’re rich you’re just filthy spitting rich, but when you’re poor it’s a hard life. Sad but true... I’ve never read the book or seen the movie but from the sound of it, seems like their talking about this kind of ritzy rich craziness

Hearing him I can tell he misses Singapore and somehow I believe if he was given a choice, he wouldn’t have left. As for children of interracial couples - like that questioner who who was Chinese/Korean w a Filipino wife, you have also to ask yrself if you want yr children to pass down anything to theirs. For example, if you teach them their mother tongue from young, they will grow up having that skill, then they can pass it on to their kids. Many kids in S'pore now do not speak the native dialects of their parents or grandparents who had come from mother countries like China, India and Malaysia. This is due in part to Sg's attempt to forge a national identity based on English, Chinese, Malay and Indian. The Chinese are the most diverse with their Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, Hainanese, Hockchew, etc., etc. - Mandarin became their enforced "mother tongue". Losing your dialect is losing a big part of your culture. As any HKonger can tell you, Mandarin is not the same as Cantonese at many levels. Sure, they share many written words, but Cantonese is an older and richer language. So, bear this in mind if you are thinking how much of a culture to impart to your kid. You lose your real mother tongue, you could lose the wit and wisdom of generations.

Despite his book Crazy Rich Asians helps Singapore's international entertainment exposures. But still just too bad Kevin Kwan can never revisit Singapore anymore, or else he would get jailed at least 6 years for desertion dodging military draft duty. Because Singapore's Defense Ministry states that Kevin Kwan never fully completes his Singaporean nationality discontinuation , in order to no need reporting for national service on given registration date in 1990. (Despite he since 11 years old, in 1984 or 1985, being in US and has never been back to Singapore anymore)

As a proud Asian Heterosexual alpha male, the trailers look boring. Then they cast a half-Asian male as lead because Hollywood's still racist can't cast a full Asian male. I will not watch this movie ever! And I've waited for so long for this! Super disappointed!
@sobegirl136 жыл бұрын
half-asian or full, does it really matter? It's not fair for mixed people to be deemed less of any of their respective ethnicities just because they're not 100% one ethnicity.
@sobegirl136 жыл бұрын
I did think before I commented. I don't see how I am discriminating against full asians, because my argument is that half-asians and full asians should be treated equally. I can see why you're upset about the partially inaccurate casting decision for the male lead, but, like Kevin Kwan mentioned in the video, the casting was based on other factors besides race, such as age (between 20-35 years old) and their capability to do a "flawless British accent." Unfortunately, there are not a lot of full-asian actors who meet that criteria. Henry Golding may not be a true asian in your eyes, but to me, and I'm sure to many others, he is and he will be a great fit for the role of Nicholas Young! This movie is a huge milestone for the Asian community, and for you to think otherwise just because the male lead is half-asian is sad. Also, you call yourself "a proud asian homosexual alpha male," yet you resort to petty personal attacks and assumptions when someone confronts you. Ironic much?
@sobegirl136 жыл бұрын
I meant heterosexual, my bad. Anyway, I'm not trying to put you down or hurt your alpha ego haha; I just want to express how I feel about this issue and try to get you to know where I'm coming from. You're the one who's taking this conversation to heart and feeling a need to personally attack me by calling me a "self-hating white girl wannabe," which doesn't make you much better than the so-called white racists who spit on Asian people. I'm not denying that discrimination towards Asians isn't an issue, because it is! Asian men in most movies/TV shows are presented as undesirable, geeky supporting characters, and that definitely needs to change. I'm simply saying I believe a half-Asian male lead can execute the movie's mission to present Asian people in a more favorable light just as well as a full-Asian man can. Why? Because being half-anything doesn't make someone any less anything. If you disagree with me, that's fine, but it's not okay to label me as a white woman just because I don't share your opinion. I could just as easily call you so many mean things but I won't because 1) I have pride in myself and 2) you're not worth it. Wish you the best!

Oriental Adventurer *”Asian Heterosexual alpha male”. That’s you? You’re something. They should make a movie about you!*
@Poemi103046 жыл бұрын
Oriental Adventurer Mr. Kwan already explained the reasons for picking Henry. If you don’t like it and think he’s not Asian enough (though I believe most White people would not able to see him as anything but Asian), then encourage your Asian family and friends to pursue jobs in entertainment so that casting directors will have more Asians to choose from. Maybe if more British born Asians were in entertainment, Henry wouldn’t have gotten the job. However, the fact of the matter is that he fit the part the best out of who was available. Besides that, I was just watching a YT video about some kind of S. Korea men’s contest, and some of those men look like they could be mixed as well. I don’t think they were, so Henry’s look isn’t a far stretch. If it was someone like Keanu, I think that would be a slap in the face though, because he’s only a quarter Asian and looks it too.
