Great video, thank you! I owned a photo studio for years (poor man's studio lol) but one of the best portraits I ever shot, was of a fine artist, a painter, and I shot it with one single desk lamp I bought at a thrift shop, leaning it on my knee! When the artist passed away a few years ago, it was the image that was used for his obituary and memorial service. Cheers.

A photographer who "needs" a $10,000 lighting setup isn't a pro photographer. Thank you for showing that experience and knowing how to use your equipment is more important than the equipment itself.
@inevitablecraftslab
@inevitablecraftslab 5 жыл бұрын
You "need" good factory support with a pro-plan, easy replacement and high built-quality. Pro stands for professional and means to earn your living with it, compared to people buying pro-equipment and don't earn a living with it, the so called amateur. Also your last sentence assumes the pro doesn't know his/her lights which is bs of course. Everyone complains about products beeing made cheaper and customer support is getting weaker and don't get that they are not willing to pay for it. Just because digital photography is booming nowadays and everyone has to have everything doesn't mean quality equipment gets cheaper.

While I do agree that 10k in lighting is excessive, the higher prices on these products is often associated with a wider range of uses like partial stop increments, remote control, quality control, as well as support should anything go wrong.

To be fair, they still used a d850... But yes, I agree that when it comes to light and umbrellas, it's really about skills. I'll also add that 650 dollars for a softbox is utter madness. I'd much rather buy 20-50 dollar umbrellas and invest more in lenses and 50-150 dollar speedlights.

Yeah, i truly agree with you, is all about concept of light, no matter what you gear you have, oh sure "expensive" gear more help to produces hight quality images more easy no doubt about that but again, with more cheap and little efford to make some DIY stuff we can achieve 'relatively' same result, Btw thanks for sharing with us @fstopper guys

You still need the right gear for the job. It's just that for this job, the cheaper gear does the job just as well. if you were shooting outdoors with some wind, you might prefer soft boxes to umbrellas that would break under those conditions. (For this shot, you don't want to shoot outdoors) If you were lighting a bigger scene or again shooting outdoors, you might need more power than a cheap speedlite will give you. The gear is important. But not the price of the gear. The fitness of the gear to the job. The photographer's skill is also important. The model cooperating is also important. It only takes one weak link to completely ruin the shot. It can be any of those.

Poor or rich gear all have the same quality to me. To this day I still use the cheapest stuff. The only real thing I spend money is if its portable enough and powerful enough. If I can't carry it with me or use it, then it is useless to. With studio lighting, the cheapest stuff is already really good unless you need that power for HSS stuff. Other than that, I feel like most photographers over spend on their gear, basically living by the idea that bigger is better. It still boggles my mind how much people spend on brand named difusers when a cheap unknown brand on amazon is enough.

I'm always talking about doing more with less when it comes to my photography, and this is a good demonstration of that principle. Of course, there are plenty of reasons one would want to use high-end gear (durability, dependability, ease of use, and in some cases appearances). Most photographers don't need to put much money into their gear; but most could stand to put a little more time into their technique.

I don't know about. Even a cheap APSC sensor is much larger than that of a phone, and a cheap $50 prime will give you nicer soft backgrounds. For the price of a $1000 iphone, you can absolutely buy an old FF DSLR, or a newer crop camera, a 50mm or 85mm f1.8 prime lens (or 180mm f2.8 used), and all the YN flashes + cheap diffusers he used here. Put that up against any phone will no lights and there won't be a competition. Keep in mind for controlled studio shots like this, you don't need an amazing lens or camera. Focus speed, VR and high ISO quality don't matter since you're shooting at base ISO so you can use just about anything.
@iSOBigD
@iSOBigD 6 жыл бұрын
Makes sense, but then why would they use a cell phone for that same purpose? I just gave an example as well as reasoning as to why a bigger sensor and lens can give you better results, just due to physics. Yes, a brand new cell phone and a 10 year old camera may not compete well (so I'm not comparing a FF sensor at 1 MP with a crop at 40mp), but at the same time a fixed aperture and fixed lens phone can't compete with any DSLR/mirrorless which can switch lenses for different uses. A phone right now can give you sharpness, good post processing due to faster processors and better software, etc. but you can't do close-ups of a bird in flight with a ~30mm equivalent cell phone lens or blur our the background as much as on a fast lens without post processing, for example, no matter how good your phone is.
@iSOBigD
@iSOBigD 6 жыл бұрын
I guess it's debatable and depends on your usage. I also take lots of cell phone pics, and when I'm traveling and don't have to carry a camera and lenses around, or it's not safe area, etc. a cell phone is great. I think cell phones absolutely destroyed the point and shoot/pocket camera segment. However, when I do use my DSLR, it's extremely rare that people looking at my pics can't tell that they're much better than what a cell phone can do. We're really not at a point where people don't often confuse cell phone pics with real camera pics unless we're talking daylight, F16 and landscape shots maybe or the newer dual camera phones using the portrait mode. And again, used lenses are relatively cheap, while phones are more and more expensive. For $50-$300 you can buy a decent used lens for just about any use from portrait primes to super wides or all-around zooms, while the price of an iphone flew past $1000. I don't think there will be a magical tiny camera that takes the same pictures as huge cameras any time soon just because a large camera of the same year/tech level will always handle light better, so there will be a use for them...at least for the next little while until something revolutionary comes along.

The main point here is how you shoot. If you're doing a lot of indoor, studio type work, you can get away with Speedlights 100%. And you could throw in a YN560tx that controls all the flashes via 2.4Ghz radio. Throw if some nice modifiers and spend an extra $500 and you'll be able to create ANYTHING $10,000 lighting set ups in THIS PARTICULAR SETTING and maybe even better since you will have so much more room to work with. Knowing how light works is much better than spending $$$$$ on lighting that does nothing to make you better and only makes you poorer...

A rich photographer will quickly be a poor photographer when the knuckle loosens and drops the light on the talent. Rig the light so the weight tightens the knuckle, not loosens it. And don't hang your sand bag so high. That raises the stand's center of gravity and defeats the purpose of adding a sandbag to begin with.

I see more detail in the poor mans light. Only because the image looks a little too well lit in the other. I guess filming has changed. People want more natural looks. But like art its in the eye of the beholder.

I think film lately has seen a shift to working with natural light... but fashion photography is still very much in the 'active light sculpting' mode. I personally think what is being done in film is very cool (and often very challenging - getting the right look when all you have are natural sources... there's some genius in the work I've been seeing)... but I still have respect for the studio folks.

The amusing part is that if you use the 'poor man's' photo and do a few, quick tweaks in either Photoshop or GIMP, you end up getting all the details of the 'poor man's' photo AND the bumped up contrast of 'rich man's' photo, resulting in a photo that is better than either original photo. No ultra-expensive lighting needed.

her hair also seems nicer on the cheaper shot.but the results are not 23(10.000/425) times better, maybe 6-7 times.It would be easier to tell if they would love to make money according to this photo -for example in a marketing campaign etc. If the additional price comes back it might worth it.But I doubt it. It is also very hard to measure stuff like that.That is why you need your senses :). I would say sometimes less is really more.Or "just enough" is the best.

Full disclosure, I shoot Profoto equipment. Just thought that should be stated upfront. With that out of the way I completely agree with the point of your video 100% which (I believe) is you can create fantastic images no matter what gear you're using as long as you know how to use it and how to work with your subject. (If Im wrong on that, please correct me). The "problem" I have with these $$$$$$$$$ vs $ videos is they never explain why professional photographers use the expensive equipment over the less expensive equipment. Most of the time more expensive gear isn't just about having more expensive gear, its about having gear that makes it more efficient and easier to get the job done that you need to get done. Sure portraits are pretty "easy" to shoot with just about any type or price of light as long as you know how to control the light you're using and how to work with the subject. I always carry a speedlight in my bag for simple, effective portraits I have to take because for simple portraits speedlights get the job done most of the time. However, I do a lot of shots where I have to freeze movement using lights. The flash duration of the lights will determine how well you can pull that off. Less expensive lights have a long flash duration and dont always produce sharp, crisp images of movement. Most of the more expensive lights have incredibly short flash durations that give me the results I want 100% of the time. How about you do this video again but instead of the model sitting there, how about getting a dancer in studio and have her do some jumps and see how well your less expensive light does compared to the more expensive light with a short flash duration (make sure you zoom in and look at the hands and feet and see if there is motion blur/ghosting). Try the same thing with the dancer but shoot a a high frame rate sequence of her jumping from one side of the frame to the other create a composite of the images where the flash fires every time (think 10+ fps). Do you think your less expensive light is going to keep up? Also, were you intentionally trying to increase the price on the Profoto setup by using the much more expensive (and not necessary) heat resistant soft boxes? Your $800 heat resistant soft box isn't necessary. You could have used the RFi version that is $260. You could have also used a third party softboxes that are even less expensive.

Also B1's are so strong you can shoot in daylight and overpower the sun - impossible to achieve with $50 speedlights. It comes down to a similar comparison of an expensive sports cars vs junk daily beaters. Both will get you to and from work in the same way. But once you start driving them at the race track, then the daily beater dies after a lap of two :-)

Exactly, when it comes to expensive and specific studio conditions, the appropriate equipment is neccesary. But, again, for most photographers working with most things, it's not really worth it to buy some equipment that makes an advantage only in some situations. The same thing applies even to a camera itself - if you're only, like, making daytime photos of your friends' holiday, you can really just use a smartphone. All of it comes down to deciding if one absolutely needs special gear for the things they are doing. These videos are just there to show people that they do not need ridiculously expensive gear for usual things.

What you say is absolutely true. As a pro it's well worth investing in some high-end gear. But for me the point of this video is not to bash on pro gear but to show that, for some work, you can get away with gear that doesn't cost you a fortune. Many beginners dream of high-end gear or even use the lack thereof as an excuse for not going out and shoot. I think it can be liberating to know you don't have to save thousands of dollars to even start with photography. You can get yourself a small, inexpensive set of equipment and do great photography with that. As you develop your skills you can add specific equipment that suits your needs.

If one where to use a bunch of YN560 IIIs with built-in 2.4G wireless receiver, why wouldn't you trigger your speedlights with a $40 Yongnuo YN560-TX trigger that also allows you to individually tune the flash power remotely instead of a $170 pocket wizard set? You could even get a decent bowens mount off-brand softbox and an S type bracket for less than the difference.

But....with the expensive gear, it's easy to make adjustments very quickly. With the cheap gear, you'd be fuddling around endlessly, taking away your concentration from the model. Working with the cheap stuff requires more time, and time is money in the professional world. That is why great chefs use very expensive knives, and pots and pans...they may be able to achieve the same results with the cheap stuff with more effort, but it's so much easier and faster with the best gear.

Nice tutorial! As a "poor" photographer, another "cheap" way to soften the flash is if you happen to have a white ceiling above the subject, simply bounce the flash from the ceiling, while also using a white cardboard reflector in front of and under the subject area to mitigate shadows from the overhead light source. This way, only one flash (expense) is required...Of course, it might not look as "polished" as the multi-flash or "Rich" option, but to each his own.

I have 2 560iii and a 660 with the TX560 - They are good for the money and have been reliable for me so far - i opted to get some inexpensive soft boxes as well - I didn't purchase everything at once - i got it bit by bit - but, you might be able to get the 2 560iii with the TX560 to start off - they come with little mounts you can set on surfaces until you can get light stands to mount them to. None of those tests are relevant. This test is not relevant, the 7000eur vs 500eur camera test is not, the 85 f1.8 vs 85 1.2 is not etc. The problem is not if you can get the same pictures with the different gear, of course you can, you can get the same picture ONLY with reflectors and the sun if you want. The question is: How fast you get the pictures and how easy it is? And what if the conditions are not so ideal? What if you have to shoot all day, or you need more power? Or you need fast recycle time? Or you don't have time to change power manually? Or...

I agree with your comment but in this specific example it doesn't quite mesh with your point because he used a pocket wizard system to trigger the speed lights when yungnuo has a trigger for their flashes or he could've used one of the units as master to control the power of, and trigger the other flashes plus he could use equally cheap strip boxes that actually collapse using an umbrella mechanism. The profoto strip boxes have to be put together and taken down which is especially horrible if you have to shoot on location. So, while in some cases more expensive gear will be more efficient to work with, I don't think that applies here

While cost is important this studio shoot misses 2 key things. Weight and size vs power, both of which become important outside the studio. On my own speedlites and shoot through umbrellas can be the only option due to size and weight but there are times outdoors where it is necessary to have the lights some distance from the subject. Those times my B1's are the only realistic choice due to their much larger light output an assistant or two becomes necessary. Speedlites are great but it is easy to find their limitations too.

Totally agree, when it comes to fighting the sun for light - things get serious. Saying that, there's brackets to hold three speedlights on one stand so there's still a fighting chance.
