A true underdog! And what an upset. The house won bigtime with the betters on this one. The winning horse was purchased last year for $30,000. Nobody saw this coming. In fact they said that #20 pulled out and Rich Strike #21 was entered on Friday just 30 seconds before the slot closed. Rich strike was in last at the beginning of the race. It was 80 to 1 odds. And the second longest shot in the history of the Kentucky derby. Awesome!

I know nothing about horses. I saw the announcement that a long shot 'Rich Strike' won the derby. The first time I watched the replay, when they were coming down the back stretch, because the announcer didn't say anything about 'Rich Strike' (and I didn't even know what he looked like), I thought the original announcement was wrong. When the announcer finally saw him, I said WHOA!!! I'm still looking for possible better video showing his run.

It's easy to focus on the head to head race between two favorites when that is the likely thing to focus on...same happened when Mine that Bird came on down the stretch. He was as shocked as the rest of us. He's only human too.

The announcer had written off all horses except the two that were in the lead at the time. I believe he was truly surprised when he had to shift gears quickly at the end. At that point it was obvious that Rich Strike was flying and the other two horses were running their normal race. I was disappointed in the rider on the pony who had no clue how to keep the horse calm but the handler had him very calm.

If you watch the finnish again, you'll see Rich Strike looking to its right at the other horse, as amazing as it may sound, the horse is super competitive, not just ridden to victory. That combination, jockey and horse was so deserving today with the position held at the back and manoeuvering through a very difficult end of race. Fabulous and well deserved victory. Love to see the underdog fly to win like they did.

I'm so happy for Eric. I knew him when I was a little girl. He trained all 4 of my grandmother's horses in the 80's. We ended up in the winner's circle many times, including Churchill Downs.

What I love about this horse and this race, is that 99% of the people did not pick this 80 to 1 long shot, most people did not win money on Rich Strike, yet we all still love the fact that Rich Strike won this race, and it was the greatest race we ever saw. On top of that, once we learn all the facts of this truly epic story, it does not matter how invested we were initially. We fall in love with the horse, his owner, the jockey, the whole team, and the story of literally over coming ALL the odds stacked against them. The owner had a tragic barn fire 2 yrs ago, Rich Strike was purchased for $30,000, originally Rich Strike was not even supposed to be in the race, he was a last-minute fill-in for a scratched horse. Rich Strike was a 80 to 1 long shot, which made this one of the biggest upsets in Derby history. In the first few seconds of the race Rich Strike was last, at one point in the race it did not look like Rich Strike was going to be able to make it through the huge pack ahead of him. Against all odds, literally all odds, this horse ran down the entire field and won the Kentucky Derby. That will give a lot of people hope for themselves and others, and for what we are going through in life. So even though millions of people did not win a dime on Rich Strike, we still love the fact that Rich Strike and the entire team won. This literally was the greatest horse race ever. God what you did for Rich Strike and his whole team, please do for America.

As someone starting her own business last year, I put this into my save folder "Inspirational", along with the NBC Sports overhead view of the race. When you sometimes think that the odds are stacked against you, and you just keep trying, again and again, this story just goes to prove, believe in yourself, keep trying, refuse to quit, and one day, you can be in the Winner's Circle. The jockey ran the race? The jockey had that speed and that maneuverability? The jockey had the heart and the desire to win? No dude, they were an absolute team. The jockey was incredible, but he was on an incredible horse too who knew what he was doing. I’ve spent my entire life around horses and worked with them a lot, you have to be a team and understand each other very well to get the best performance. It’s very clear that these two are partners and this man understands the horse he was on. And that amazing horse understands and trust his jockey. It was a team effort. Both of them had the skills, the heart, and the desire to win. The speed and the maneuverability were the horse alone, the skills to bring him through it were the jockey.
