Even when I was 15 in 1968, I could tell Judith Durham was a 'special' person - one of the sort you only meet two or three of in your lifetime. There was something about her nature that made her easy to connect with, and millions did. There is also no doubt that the four of them together was a unique sound, never to be repeated. I never heard the Shores of Avalon song until today (2023) and it's another great hit in their repetoire. :) :)

This is a tune that I heard many times over here in Northern Ireland back in the 60's and 70's but never knew its name. The names Avalon and Tintagel I associate with Cornwall and Arthurian legend. I may be wrong of course. Never heard the lyrics until now. Judith does it again. What a beautiful voice and so very ably accompanied by the guys.

Every time I hear these old songs, with so much feeling, musically beautiful, lyrically moving, I realize how the best music of our days of youth flowered across the world with grace. Much of the music we hear today lacks the qualities of feeling and melancholy we found back then, but I am almost 77, and grew up with the greatest music of all time. (Yes, I am unapologetically partial to the songs of the sixties to the eighties. )

Judith epitomised everything that was great about the swinging 60's. She had the most beautiful unmistakable voice ever heard on record, TV, radio or live. She was drop dead gorgeous without even trying. Flat heels, minimal make-up, covered from neck to knees but swaying from side to side, hands on hips, while recording "I'll never find another you" at the Abbey Road studios was a master class to any current wannabee. Talent & class always beats computer aided dross. Those of us who lived with the music of The Seekers were so lucky and will now have to make do with the countless opportunities available on social media to relive those times. Try this one for starters - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYvJZWSLqsl0mKs RIP Judith, & thanks for the ride Athol, Bruce and Keith.

Hey Rich -- I'm so very happy that you have included this remarkably poignant song into your collection. This bittersweet ballad demonstrates perfectly just one of the different styles of singing that Judith can perform with heart and subtlety, and as always, with masterly control of vibrato. It seems that over the years her voice has "mellowed," if that's the correct term, to the extent that she has proven over and over again that she can be ranked with the best of singers in virtually any category of popular music. Here, she was in her fourth decade of performing, and hasn't lost a step -- in fact, I'll argue that she never stopped improving. This song remains probably my favorite of all of her efforts, Many thanks!

Thanks Rich for including this song. I have been a fan of The Seekers since the 60's but hadn't heard this song until today. It was particularly poignant as I heard this morning that my best mate at university had passed away overnight. I got my love for 12 string guitars from listening to Keith and still play my vintage Eros from 1967. Will be learning to play this lovely song in memory of my mate, Dave.

🇭🇲 🦘 .. Dear Malcolm. I happened to read your comment, after watching (and listening) to this song, again. Whilst I don't know you (nor you me) I read of the recent death of your friend, Dave. Please accept my deapest sympathies, at this most sad time in your life. I have been a huge fan of The Seekers for as long as I can remember, and learned to play classical guitar as a young woman in the 1960's. This rendition of The Shores of Avalon is breathtakingly beautiful, although my words don't do the song, Judith, or 'the boys' justice. Yes, I call them 'the boys'! I do listen to their music quite often, but listen to this song again and again. Sometimes even closing my eyes to 'take it in'. So beautiful, it 'takes you away' with it, to another time and place. I thought it a lovely gesture (on your part) to decide to learn to play this song, in memory of your friend. I'm sure that Dave will be watching over you as you learn, and play. If it helps you, in your grief, know that others (like me) love this song too, and I wish you well for the future. Take care, from a lady who loves playing the guitar, The Seekers, music, and all who love (and miss) their lifelong friends.

@@malcolmriviere8256 No need to apologise Malcolm, but so very lovely to hear from you, to know that you're alright. You will always miss your dear friend Dave, but it does get easier. .. As I do listen to this song very often (as a favourite of mine) I often think of you, even though I don't know you, and your loss. ... Although I must admit, as I've lost so many friends and family myself, that at certain times, something 'triggers a memory' (often a happy memory) and then it seems like yesterday that they were there in my life. Some days I struggle, but 'soldier on' (as the saying goes). Grief is a very personal thing, and we all deal with it differently. .... I'm in no doubt that Dave will be very proud of you, and 'love it' that you have learnt this song 'in his memory'. I wrote 'will be' instead of 'would be' because I believe that those we lose 'live on' through us, in our memories and hearts. They are part of who we are, having played such significant roles in our lives. Anyway, that is what I believe. ... Take good care of yourself Malcolm, and I wish you all the very best for your future. "Be happy Malcolm" in all that you do, as I'm sure that Dave would want that! .. All the best, from an Australian 'friend' (an old lady now, but young at heart) .. Lyndell 💕 🎶🎶 🇭🇲🦘

I've said many times The Seekers are my favorite group. Having said that, I think this is the first time I've heard The Shores of Avalon . I am especially moved by it. In some ways it symbolizes my life during the year following my visit to Sydney and experienced music by this wonderful group for the first time. Within 6 months of leaving Sydney we cruised northeast past the Fiji Island, Tonga and on to American Samoa then to Pearl Harbor after which we headed west again to Guam, the Philippines and eventually Vietnam. After arriving in Vietnam we cruised from the DMZ south then all the way to just south of Cambodia. We retraced this pattern many times. More than 98 percent of our time was just offshore or out at sea that entire time. We made on trip to Hong Kong and back and a couple to Subic Bay PI and back.

I believe Avalon refers to a mythical, mystical island in the legends of King Arthur's realm. It was the place where Excalibur was forged and where Arthur was taken after being wounded, in hopes that he could be healed. It may be a symbolic reference to a place beyond death. Judith's husband of 25 years died in 1994 so this may be a tribute to him and comfort to others who have lost loved ones.
