Richard Corben's ROWLF -From Underground Comics to Heavy Metal to Two Near Movie Adaptations

We take a good look at ROWLF, one of artist Richard Corben's early masterpieces of comic book art. Originally published in the Voice of Comicdom in 1970 along with an interview with Corben where he talks about pre-production on a feature film version of the comic book, then later in 1980 when another attempt was made to adapt Rowlf.
Published in black and white by VoC and Rip Off Press, Rowlf was later printed in color in the pages of Heavy Metal magazine over a span of three issues.

Rowlf has always been my favorite Richard Corben character. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Big Heavy Metal Magazine fan back in high school during the late seventies and early eighties. 🪶✌🏽😁

Rowlf is great, love Corben's early black and white underground stuff, in particular stories he did for Skull and his own publication, Fantagor.

Lead Paint, they're not that expensive, I picked up my copy for about 20 bucks. It's the original printing in Voice of Comicdom 1970 that is really pricey and hard to find.

The Rip-off Press one shot is awesome but I was surprised to find out that it was previously printed in VoC along with a key Corben interview about his initial plans to make Rowlf a movie after Neverwhere. Too bad it didn't happen.

Funny piece of trivia: Hayao Miyazaki, yes, THAT Hayao Miyazaki wanted to adapt Rowlf into an animated feature but couldn't secure the rights, so he made Nausicaa instead.
