Well here's another Dawkins themed upload. Had the urge to try my hand at some animation and some new software, I think it turned out quite well. For some reason I decided to recreate the popular "What if you're wrong?" clip on youtube featuring Richard Dawkins lecture in Lynchburg.
Watch the full lecture here fora.tv/2006/10/23/Richard_Daw...
I did have some ideas for some different endings but I thought I would just keep it faithful to the original. Feel free to send me your ideas on amusing variations...
Oh and this should be viewable in full HD!

I will give you an example of a good counterargument on you're ad hominem comment about homosexuals; If God is real, he created the animals. But there are Thousand of animals that are showing homosexual behavior. But Homosexual behavior isn't good (God's view). So there is something logically wrong about you're irrational and ad hominem ending statement/claim. Please, if you claim something, come with some descent arguments and not with the -very easy- argument "The Bible say so"

(correct me if I'm wrong). My personal kind of smart a$$ response is that if the bible god is real then he is arguably a narcissist and a tyrant. Spending eternity with such a being would just be another form of hell. Therefore if fundy Christianity is true you are damned if you do, damned if you don't basically. This argument is only effective against biblical literalists tho'. (I just noticed I already stated this in a reply to this clip, but you may have not seen it.)

It's was for Angels and gods and it's rules of entry are older than the monotheist fire and fear based hocus pocus.. To all the people who think "he dodged the question." He did the complete opposite by pointing out the idiocy of the question. "What if you're wrong?" Depending on your beliefs, you already know the answer to that and since that lady was probably Christian, she already knows the answer to that hence making it more of a rhetorical question than anything. "What if you're wrong?" Was he supposed to answer with "I'll burn in hell." No, because that's about perspective and beliefs because some people don't believe he'll burn in hell. Was he supposed to answer with "the ancient juju up the mountain will spank me for eternity." No, because again, that's about perspective. That's not a question that can simply be answered because there's infinite possibilities of what could happen to him if he's wrong. He answered the question perfectly by pointing out the idiocy and hypocrisy in it.

Exactly, he should have listed all the religions to date, which probably are around a thousand. Then he should have explained what would happen in each of those religions if he was wrong and did not believe in it. Just because the question may be flawed, doesn't mean he didn't dodge it. The number of people who are able to answer the question - including the OP of this very comment thread - yet still critique the question itself demonstrates how he failed to answer the question. "Why" he dodged the question is still debateable, but almost certainly because his inner Anglican is scared, and his fake "look what a grown up I am that I don't have to believe in a fairy tale creator of the universe" is further afraid that if he tries to say, "I guess I'll burn for eternity; what's your point?" that his voice cracking a little might give away his lack of confidence

@Muhammedlee I'm not really seeing anything of substance that makes your point. People changing religion does not mean as you describe it here. If I go to a different country, the laws are different. Does that now mean that the laws are not real? Countries also change laws. What's legal at one point is illegal at another. And vice versa. Why you rejected Christianity for non-faith won't be the same for others nor would it be for others who change their faith. How about those who rejected being atheists or found faith when they had none before. This quote doesn't cover such people. It assumes you've always had a religion and always believed in a god.

"He didn't answer the question" Yes he did, implicitly, and here it is spelled out: The logic behind her implied argument is "If you believe in God but you're wrong, then you just die and that's that, no harm. But if you DON'T believe in God and you're wrong you go to hell. Therefore it's rational to believe." (it's called Pascal's wager, look it up) For her (as a Christian), it looks like the only options are: -no faith vs. faith But in reality it is: -no faith vs. faith in Christian God vs. faith in Hindu Gods vs. faith in Scientology, etc. which means that believing in God doesn't insure you against going to hell, you have to believe in the RIGHT God. But which God is the right one? For her, and every other religious person the answer is obviously "my God is the RIGHT God," in other words, it comes down to what community you were raised in. Dawkins pointed this out to her by mentioning all these alternatives, asking her "what if YOU'RE wrong about the Christian God?" Admittedly, he could've been more direct about.

@Musaib Nazir Yes but if women in Islamic counties refuse to be covered up, you beat her and send her to prison until she either submits and does as she is told, or she is stoned to death. Saudi Arabia only permitted that women can drive on their own this year, women can't go anywhere without the permission of a husband or father, and if you're abused? Oh well! Allah will reward you in the afterlife if you stay with your abusive husband because that is what women are meant to do! We'll stand by and let it happen. It's sickening! Women in the West are uncovered because we are able to choose to be. Women being "sold" as you claim only do so because it is their choice. If all women in the West were forced to work as Porn stars the moment they became of legal age, then you might actually have an argument.

Although Dawkins answered the question wonderfully Christians still think that if god doesn't exist they lose nothing and if god does exist they go to heaven and we go to hell. You are wrong. You do lose something. You lose the only life you ever had. You spent your life living a lie unable to try things that the bible restricted. The bible restricts pre-marital sex and you miss out on enjoying a life time of wonderful company. If you're muslim you miss out on tasting bacon, alcohol and being comfortable with your body and not shielding it with a hijab! You miss out on all these freedoms because a book told you not to try it. If atheists are right and there is no god don't think you lost nothing. You lost the ability to think for yourself. You were warped by fear to live your life by outdated dogma. You will lose your only shot of freedom. And when eternal nothingness greets you, you won't have a second chance at life.

From my Christian perspective my life in Yeshua is a wonderful life. I have deep joy that lifts me up under the worst that life can throw at me. I have love for all creatures and peace with men. When I wake up I'm not filled with fear but abounding joy. My God is not angry with me. The debt for my sin has been paid and I live as his child. You are correct to point out that some things are restricted for me. But what do those things truly give me? I do not have sexual relations anymore as I'm a divorced man. This doesn't prevent me from enjoying the company of others. There are many benefits to living a life free from the bondage of sexual immorality. I also have not lost the ability to think for myself. I do it all the time. I think then I act on those thoughts, just like you do. I have my moral code and you have yours. Do you believe that someone who wishes to live by a moral code is somehow unable to think? Fear of God, in part, brought me to my God but it was his love and compassion that changed everything for me. I don't fear my God in the way that you probably mean it. I run to my God and he receives me with open arms as a father receives his son. You say I have no freedom but I say that true freedom can only exist in a right relationship with God. You think I'm in bondage but I believe it is you who are wearing chains about your neck, arms and feet. How does eternal nothingness greet anyone? If you are right, we die and that's the ball game, no greetings from anything or anyone. The only regrets I have are those things which I did outside of God's desire for me. In Yeshua HaMashiach YHWH

I'm an atheist but I have to disagree with you with some aspects of your statement. Most religious people feel a sense of fulfilment by worshipping whichever God they worship, so they feel content in their lives. They won't feel a sense of regret when they die because they will in fact be dead and greeted with nothingness. They won't feel cheated, upset or regretful, they won't BE so it's irrelevant how they lived their lives. People's sense of fulfilment in life is not the problem because we all feel like we chose a life that's worthwhile while we are alive, and once we are dead we're not alive to contemplate it. The real problem is when people shove belief systems that can in no way be proven down your throat, and make them affect your own life. It's amazing how people can be so sure of something so uncertain.

"What if you're wrong?" is easily answered by the quote that is being attributed, seemingly falsely, to Marcus Aurelius as well as the one made by Epicurus. Which is to say "the logical problem of evil". Simply put, if there is an all powerful all knowing being and they're benevolent then they won't hold it against you for not believing in them, so long at least you've done your best to be benevolent. Why would an all powerful and all knowing benevolent creature want to be petty and hold you against belief in them, especially without any proof? That's highly unfair. And if they're malevolent, then why want to follow such a being in the first place, unless you're inherently a malevolent person yourself and simply because of the promise of pain or pleasure is enough to buy your soul? That's carrot&stick bribery/conditioning 101. It is not a sound solid foundation to build your values upon. I'd rather oppose a malevolent god than suck upto it because of promised payoff should I sell out. How'd that be different than shilling for Hitler and the nazis or Hitler and the soviet?

In Norse mythology, warriors chosen by the Valkyries would conveniently die on the battlefield and be brought to Valhalla to prepare for the battle at the end of time (Ragnarok), while standard people would get to boring old Folkvangr or Helheim (but nowadays, we don't know who goes where because of the influence of christian evangelism 'polluting' accounts with their bias when recording the tales). Considering Folkvangr was ruled more or less by Freyja (goddess linked with traditionally good attributes) while Hel was Loki's wife and not a nice (remember christian bias, they probably needed a satan analogue) goddess overall... You can draw conclusions yourself.

hardwire, I think you missed his point. When someone asks "What if you're wrong?" they're normally suggesting "If I'm wrong, nothing happens. If you're wrong, you go to hell. You should believe the same things as me to avoid that risk" But if a religious person is wrong and any *other* religion is right, they're just as fucked. They'll answer to some other religion's god and go to some other religion's hell. Because the threat of being wrong applies to everyone, you can't choose a belief just to avoid it. Instead, you must choose a belief based on evidence.

Okay... As for anyone willing and brave enough to come into a KZbin comment section with an open mind, well I've lost everyone already. For those of you who make the argument that there are still things in the Universe that are impossible to explain scientifically; Let's not forget that that statement has been said for thousands of years. Back when Aristotle was making his scripts, he said, "an object in motion slows down because it get's tired". Obviously we know now that that's not true. Before Issac Newton created calculus and showed the mathematical and scientific implications of Gravity, anyone could say that the moon falling in the sky is "supernatural". People of religion keep putting themselves in a smaller and smaller box, as they keep losing ideas of what they once thought supernatural, now are being explained by Science, Math, evidence, and Reason. Not scriptures from a book written by people who didn't know what an atom is.

Do you know what rationality means? It means that the points you are trying to make have actual tangible data to back said points up. So when Professor Dawkins trashes the Bible, or Karan, etc, he has a rational discussion because there is evidence around the world that debunk every religious historical story/miracle in scriptures. It's not like he's just trotting on about how he doesn't like the bible; he brings to the discussion real scientific data that disproves these religious stories. And I say religious people don't believe in science because it's completely true. look at the Congress of the US, you have republican religious conservatives denying the ENTIRE scientific community's statistical data on climate change. And also when you say I'm irrational because both Newton and Einstein were religious; well for one that doesn't make sense, and two I could care less about what they believed in. Look at the data present. Cross reference the timeline of Biblical sense (6,000 years) to the actual timeline of the universe (13.8 billion years). We know it's 13.8 billion years old, because the farthest galaxies we can see in space, are 13.8 billion light years away. It took the light of those galaxies 13.8 billion years to travel to our planet, and they are just arriving now. Again, not irrational, because it has tangible evidence to back up statements.

+badvagirl Einstein was an agnostic and a pantheist. He stated quite explicitly "It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it".
@gerotop

***** I assume the last statement was directed at Jeremy. Atheism has sort of semantic issues. Most rational people who call themselves atheists subscribe to the definition of atheism as an absence of the belief of god rather than a rejection of the possibility that god exists. So in a sense, they are agnostics. Richard Dawkins himself claims he's technically an agnostic.
@jcode1919
@jcode1919 8 жыл бұрын
***** Oh just the statistical data from NASA that shows that the polar ice caps are melting by 9% each decade. The sheer amount of ice that we are talking about here melting in the short span of just a decade is massive. So there, you have more data to prove climate change than the entire argument by the religious community that god is real. Secondly... All that's different from being an Atheist or Agnostic is that an Agnostic recognizes that their are still questions of the Universe that science has still yet to answer. for instance the big bang. We as humans do not have enough data to show what happened before the big bang. So, as an Agnostic, I would say I could believe in a higher power because even scientifically their are unanswered questions, but I just don't believe there is a giant security camera in the sky that sees everything you do and judges you for it. To me that sounds like utter bullshit.

Hmm, I am impressed of how weak the argument is… There are lots of people who are brought up Christian that turn agnostic or atheist, there are people who are brought up in other religions and convert to another… how can you base your argument on someone’s place of birth?? those people who are brought up in one religion and they stick with it without making any questions aren’t true believers, regardless of what religion you are raised on… The one who seeks the truth will find it, the one who conforms with what is familiar and not really think about if what they believe is true, is in fact not true because it’s not truth itself, even if you happen to believe the truth because you without knowing it, it makes you an ignorant because you don’t even know if you are right, you have blind faith, and that is for the hypocrites! Sure, you can’t know EVERYTHING, but there is plenty of logical, mathematical, scientific, historical, and (etc) archeological evidence to believe that there is a God… Even the concept of God itself is proven in Christianity because if we imagine God, it is an infinite source of knowledge, power, creation, a true God wouldn’t be an to fit inside our minds and that’s one of the many reasons why Christianity is true, because we can’t and we will never fully understand (at least here on earth) what, who, why and how God is!!! We can understand some bits and the fact that we can understand it and know stuff thanks to our intelligence is actually proof that there is an intelligent God that created inteligible things!! All glory to God, God bless you, hope this can reach you and I am open for debate :) 🫶

I'm a theist, but I do believe that we are the product of Evolution. But that question, ''Who created God?'' is self-contradictory. Because if someone/something created any god, let alone the Abrahamic God, the you have to ask the same question for that creator, then the next one and so on. Besides, if there really is a cosmic entity that created the universe, then (s)he or it would have to be timeless ad exist outside the universe. And think about it, if you define the "always-existing-being" as God, then maybe the universe, the "sum" of everything, including space and time, is indeed God. There is no God as a separate entity, the universe itself is God, the things compose it, like us, are parts of God. Doesn't it sound more awesome?

An appropriate and intelligent response would simply be "if I am wrong and it is consistently demonstrated I am wrong, than I have the courage and content of character to accept the correction if the presented argument is demonstrably consistent and therefore factual and not based simply on assumed or presumed beliefs or lack of. " Then you can pose the question in response..."would you be willing to in turn, contrary to all you believe or assumed to believe to be true, if likewise shown your assumed, presumed or imposed beliefs are wrong, accept the correction, or would you instead seek to resort to confirmation biases to preserve those beliefs rather than face the impersonal facts as they are?" Then leave it alone for them to think about if they choose to do so and do not bother with them any further, and move on rather than resort to verbal attacks or arguments over doctrines.

With all due respect, Dawkins didn't answer the question. He just was angry and used the Reductio ad absurdum technique to dismiss the argument.
@SupremeSquiggly
@SupremeSquiggly 9 ай бұрын
It wasn’t even an argument that you claim he dismissed. He showed how bad the question was. No believer worries about if they’re wrongs. A Christian will end up in hell right next to an atheist if the Muslims are correct. It’s a lazier version of something like Pascal’s wager. Believers are overwhelmingly more likely to believe the religion of their parents and home country.
@BrownHairL

He DID answer the question, and in the single best way possible. For those of you who didn't understand, the implied answer is: "If I'm wrong, I don't know what would happen because I'd still not know what *right* means. The answer would vary according to the thousands of religious beliefs that have appeared throughout humanity, and all of them, in this context, would have the same chance of being right - your particular belief of what would happen if I'm wrong is not special in any way, thus making the rhetoric completely empty, as you could be just as wrong."

I think you are missing the context of the whole speech. This video is just a small tid-bit of it. He was saying how wrong Christianity the entire time. However, his speech back fired when someone asked if he could be wrong about Aliens being gods. Your implication of what he said is nothing more then an assumption. He never answered “what if your wrong”.

It's not a condescending question, it's perfectly natural. If you can't accept the possibility your wrong, your too invested in your belief system. That holds true for every belief system, including atheism. In this case, Dawkins proves he's no different then those he insults, he refuses the possibility that he might be wrong by not answering the question. He could have easily made a friendly joke and then answered seriously. But he didn't, ask yourself what that means.

+RJ G No, he was simply pointing out the most basic flaw of Pascal's Wager. Disbelief in all gods has no significant mathematical disadvantage to belief in any one particular god, as because a god has never been proven to exist, there is an infinite number of possible gods that could or could not exist, including a reality where no god exists.

well mr dawkins uses the ''follow the evidence'' line because thats the logican and intelligent thing to do. if you follow the evidence you can see that all religion is bullshit and it was only made of to give people and understanding of the things they did not understand (a.k.a. god). richard dawkins maybe sounds insulting, but who would give a slight condecending awnser if hes given the same stupid questions over and over again by the same stupid ignorant religious people who only want to try and prove mr dawkins wrong, while that is impossible. mr dawkins simply follow the evidence that simply fact.
