Did you know that Richard Dean Anderson refused to participate in the recent MacGyver reboot and that the original MacGyver star is still around today at the age of 72? When the television series MacGyver first came on the air in 1985, few could’ve predicted what a pop-culture sensation the show was going to become. The series aired on ABC and became a gigantic hit for the network. A big part of the show’s appeal was the star who played its titular character. Of course, that star is Richard Dean Anderson, and he’s still around today! While MacGyver arguably could’ve lasted much longer due to its immense popularity, the show ended up coming to an end after its seventh season. Many fans have wondered over the years why the show ended its run so abruptly during what was arguably the height of its popularity, and Richard has never been afraid to explain.

Some might have assumed that MacGyver came to an end because the show was decreasing in ratings, but this wasn’t the case. Instead, it seems that the series came to an end due to a mutual feeling amongst its cast and crew that the show had simply run its course. There was also the fact that star Richard Dean Anderson was 42 years old by the spring of 1992, which is when the show aired its final episode. Join Facts Verse as Richard Dean Anderson confirms why MacGyver had to be canceled.

Macgyver was great and Richard Dean Anderson was an amazing actor. He was so modest, good-hearted and cool. In today's shows, there's no heroes like him anymore.

What was so brilliant about the original series was, on top of everything mentioned in the video, that every episode seemed to have both a moral and a unique story which gave a sense of insight and wisdom. Every episode had its purpose, and shed light on various important topics such as enviromental challenges, extinction of animals, sustainable developement, human nature and kindness, fight against racism, YOU NAME IT! They even made an episode to shed light on the deaf community! Such a wonderful show. Highly recommend it to everyone who hasn't seen it. Still super relevant today

"Every episode had it's purpose..." Kindly note that your possessive use of "it's" should be "its". One doesn't use an apostrophe when writing "his", "hers", or "theirs" now do they? The same grammatical principals apply when using "its" possessively to a noun.

One gripe I may have about this show was its excessive use of coincidence. Magyver rarely did anything on behalf of the Phoenix Foundation, which took away from the reality of the show a bit. Once in a while would have been okay. But not most of the time. Know what I’m saying?

Actually it's allure was that the everyman could " MacGyver " . His character was consistently that of an honest man who had a sharp mind that could outthink better equipped opponents. It's a similar trope throughout that time period. Rocky and John McClain were tough everymen . The Steven Siegel and Jean Claude Vandamme characters were ordinary men that trained in martial arts. Even Rambo was seen as the everyman. This was a contrast to the James Bond character that was backed by the government and had that source of unlimited resources .

Each time paying homage to the show by saying that I "MacGyvered" it. And people understand the term. Great show. Great character.

In an early [pilot?] episode of SG-1, Amanda Tapping's character says they "MacGyvered" the Stargate to function. Also, as I didn't know about RDA's unwillingness to cameo/guest star, I thought he might appear as Till''s father when they were going to introduce the character.

Btw I can't believe it took me scrolling this far to find a Stargate comment and it didn't even mention it technically. A lot of us started watching Stargate because we knew him from McGuyver and it too had decent to incredible writing. Both shows were great and iconic in their own unique ways and similar ways obviously. Richard sure knows how to pick em and he knows when to quit, he can see when things are getting stale.

@@DeathBYDesign666 I even remember an episode where Christopher Judge guessed stared on Mac Guyver before Stargate SG-1 was even made and he was playing a troublemaker high school student that Mac Guyver had to teach a lesson. But the remake seemed to lead away from the morals of Mac Guyver being anti guns and what not and it was like the new writers were changing what made Mac Guyver Mac Guyver.

Fantastic series. Though often somewhat implausible, its depictions of scientific methodology and critical thinking were truly revolutionary, and the world is much poorer for the fact that TV shows no longer depict rational people solving problems in creative ways using their knowledge and intuition rather than violence and force.

Integrity, respect for fans and knowing when to end/get out. Skills that get you memorable roles and the respect of the fans. Better a 7 years series that holds than a 12 year series nobody watches. Frankly, after 7 years it gets stale. Better nostalgia, and perhaps a movie every couple years, than boredom.

I was young when I first watched MacGyver every week, and it remains my favorite show to this day. The fact is, a lot of the original series' success owed it to Richard Dean Anderson, and his portrayal of an ordinary, humble guy whose intellect and quick wit helped him out of many sticky situations, and you just cannot replace a person like him in the reboot. You know I was an 80’s kid so Macgyver was a great show growing up. The cool thing that I liked was the obvious like the positive message in all episodes, the gadgets and not guns, and so fourth. Also, the one thing that I loved more than RDA himself is the fact how in real life me, my dad, RDA, and Tiffany Amber Thiessen all share the same birthday. It made me love the show and continue to love the show. I never really got into the reboot even though Lucas Till is a good friend of mines cousin and told me this when he was on Hannah Montana. I only watched a few episodes myself, but I found it very annoying that in the original series they protected MacGyver‘s first name vigorously and never revealed it except one time in fire written on the wall backwards, and in the new series they just called him Angus all the freaking time. The characters like Jack Dalton or Penny Parker or Murdoc are very cool and also Pete was a good actor. I think it was good that in many episodes there were just a few people involved but that makes it easier to follow and it has more depth. The original show ended on a perfect note, with Macgyver wanting to get to know the son he'd just found out he had. Anderson then went into several seasons of Stargate SG-1, a series with equally physical demands. His subsequent surgeries were likely related to same. I agree the Macgyver reboot couldn't have been true to the original, considering all the advancements in technology. It's a different world now, so the reboot was a different show. I think the reboot would have been best if instead of remaking the original MacGyver, they made it his son, Sam's story. It would have been perfect. The younger actor would have fit the role and the original fans would have accepted it.

You nailed it, that's exactly it! That's how they could have had a chance at bringing MacGyver back, and that is the only way it could work. As a sequel instead of a "redo". The original series left it open for for such writing and it could have actually been really good if they took that angle.

The best. I got all series, watched some episode on the flight week or so ago. Still has my genuine swiss knife that my brother bought for my 15th birthday. On one of my walks in the forest with my dog as a teenager, I sprained my ankle, no mobile phone era and my dog dissapear but as the scared girl started to panic overwhelmed with pain and tears rolling down, swelling on her ankle… here came a thought ‘what would McGyver do?’ She took off her vest layer and fixed it around her ankle, dried the tears, counted 5 then stood up, and with direct voice called her dog who ran fast towards her. I couldn’t figure out the physics behind building helicopter out of leaves but she walked through the pain for another almost an hour home. Her mother still told her off for being late but that day she became her own hero😂😂 with Mc’s first aid ‘trick’😂so funny when i think back but yeah, I would be still sitting there and crying 🎉🎉

Macgyver came out when I was 10. As a creative, active kid, I loved it from the beginning. My Dad was a kind of philosophical mountain man type. And he liked Macgyver as a role model. But my best friends dad was a heavily religious Baptist and he saw my friend watching an episode that was a little more graphic than the others. I think maybe someone got stabbed or something. My friend came to me woefully, "Macgyver is on trial. Dad is going to watch on episode with me, and if he finds it objectionable, I can't watch it anymore." The next episode was "The Widowmaker." That's the episode where Macgyver's arch-nemisis, Murdoc returns after Macgyver loses his friend whose harness breaks and falls off the mountain. If you'll remember, at the end of this episode, Murdoc accidentally cuts his own rope and falls off the mountain yelling, "Macgyyyveeeeer!". After the episode I asked my friend who it went. "Well, he made a weird face when Murdoc brought out the flamethrower, but at the end said, 'that wasn't so bad.'" My friend was saved!

Richard's time in SG1 effected things in a great way. His old role was routinely mentioned by the characters. Macgyver was a TV show in that world and the term was used for jury rigging things repeatedly on it...but NEVER by O'Neal. They intentionally never had Richard's character mention his previous lead role and instead had the younger members around him refer to it. It was a great nod to him as an actor that defined TV for awhile and in having that Macgyver spirit you often saw the group jury rig things together as Macgyver would just to survive.

I could hardly believe my eyes I could be holding something from the other side of the pond as well as something thats been sent by MacGyver, my childhood hero. With embarassement I admit I lost it and it is my dream to write to R.D.Anderson and ask for a second chance. Sequel would have been better. Imagine: RDA reprises his role as the one and only Angus MacGyver, now natural mentor to his long-lost son, Sam, whom was already introduced as a capable bad-ass during final season of original run; Bruce McGill returns periodically as the true Jack Dalton, aged as he would be; Michael Des Barres returns as Murdoc, training his successor. MacGyver has left the Phoenix Foundation (see S7E13) and is freelancing with his son, at least for starters -- RIP Dana Elcar

@LittleSunshine0772 . . . you didn't miss anything by not watching the reboot. From the outset the reboot was a travesty, as that version of MacGyver would use the Jack Dalton character as his _gun man_ when they got into scrapes. For MacGyver that prided himself with avoiding firearms, having Dalton along to do _shoot-em-ups_ was deplorable!

Even if Richard Dean did appear in the reboot, what would he have done there? But I admire his opposition to it. I frequently get offended by all the sell outs there are in the land of celebrities. One recent example is hearing about Robert Englund appearing on an episode of the Goldbergs. Then there’s Stan Lee making cameos in all those desecrations of his work. There are other examples but I just can’t think of them at the moment. I congratulate Richard Dean for staying true to his principles!
