I think one should distinguish between a) Will Smith's unacceptable and immature behavior born out of a broken relationship with a narcissistic woman plus problems from his childhood, and b) the immoral behavior of the other guests present and the Academy who let him receive the Oscar afterwards and give him a standing ovation. The inappropriate reaction of this high society to the aggressive behavior of one of their own shows how hypocritical Hollywood is with its virtue signaling, and that they have been given too much money, attention and power for far too long.

You're right, and I agree with the vast majority of that. If DiCaprio, DeNiro, Denzel, Daniel Day Lewis would have done that, they may've also received a pass, if they were up for annual awards and considering their cache in the community. Lots of factors happening - live TV full of human error, the actor doing it being the same as that shoe'd-in for Best Actor, other first-time honors to come soon after the altercation, etc. Another one may be his peers weren't angry, but actually supremely confused and worried for his mental state - not wanting him to tank the rest of his professional career from something to obscure, spiraling further. All that said, plus taking into account his personal life situations/insecurities with his marriage and recent memoir, nobody...ever...has the right to feel immune from repercussions when putting violent hands on another (absent self defense). Chris Rock is the one Denzel and others should have talked with, no doubt, but Rock's class in accepting the confusion and still being a pro - nobody was worrying about and consoling him with advice. It'll be interesting to see how Will navigates in the coming days: Remorse and introspection about subverting his own values to his wife's, and just "be a good husband?" Or denial of the magnitude, speak nonsensically about "Fierce defender of love, God's new task for me," with smiles and laughter? P.S. last note, no Assault there :) Battery only. Not trying to be the annoying person to correct semantics, but it's mind-blowing how few people know what Assault actually is compared to other crimes. Assault is the action one takes that places the Battery recipient in imminent fear of bodily danger. Battery is the physical touching component, and can be either "offensive" or "harmful". The confusion comes from the two separate crimes occurring together so frequently. In the scene, Rock was so unsuspecting of imminent physical harm coming from Big Willy Style, an Assault charge would get thrown out immediately, if even brought. I digress though,. Longest comment I've every typed haha, just thought new knowledge is typically good knowledge!

I can't believe how far society has plummeted that violence at the Oscars happened, but that it hasn't been dealt with by the Academy as well as by the police, is par for the course these days. This incident is just a reflection of what's happening in society today. Violence is permeating all walks of our lives, whether you go to a store and witness looting, or shootings, or are a victim of a home invasion, we're not safe anywhere, and now this. The human race is devolving back to it's caveman origins.

I totally agree. A spiral of decay in the USA! The academy is all about naval gazing!

I've heard countless commentators condemn Smith's actions as wrong, but Dreyfuss is the first I've heard state that Smith's actions were _unthinkable_ , or at least, were unthinkable not so very long ago. This was my initial reaction, and it's a great relief to have someone finally confirm it. And to think that Smith was feted with a standing ovation. Did I dream it?!!?!?

Chris Rock has a Non-Verbal Learning Disorder so it’s difficult for him to read body language that’s why he uses laughs to know how he’s doing. He couldn’t quickly read there was a threat, and why would he think that was going to happen at the Oscar over a GI Jane joke. Chris goes to therapy for it and to deal with childhood trauma for 7 hours a week. You could tell Chris was not trying to be cruel. He didn’t compare her to Cojack, The Mask, or Uncle Fester. He even said he had no idea she had Alopecia. This may be a news flash but most straight men don’t watch her red counter convos. They may hear some snippets of the smith crazy from their woman IF she finds it interesting. I didn’t know she has Alopecia. So is that also why Willow, Tiffany Haddish, and Amber Rose have buzz cuts too???

The standing ovation says so very much. Anyone can make a mistake and overreact. But for a whole room to celebrate and applaud it … incomprehensible

This is a time of moral decay in America and do not be surprised to see judgement by the Almighty. Do not place our future in the hands of man, but In God . I appreciate Mr. Dreyfuss' honesty and he is old enough to remember a better standard of integrity in America.

The Academy MUST discipline Smith very harshly. I personally want him to be ban from the Academy forever, expel out of the membership, and finally take his Oscar away.

Honestly, whatever their punishment would be of a non celebrity should be EXACTLY what happens to Will Smith. Imo....it's the only way they can save the Oscars. If they would ban a non celebrity for life then by all means that's what it will be. But, they won't ...they're so afraid of the woke cult and so afraid of BLM and to be called racists that because the fact that will Smith is a black man he will get to keep his Oscar. I hope I'm wrong but we've become so spineless , I don't have any hope.

I caught the tail end of the Oscars back in the 70s in the 80s when you really had some great movies and great actors. It isn’t even a shadow of what once was.
@MistyBell132 жыл бұрын
As an Australian, I've never understood this fascination with Hollywood and all of its excesses. I love movies and respect actors and their craft (and all the people behind the scenes) and what they bring to the set. Richard is right, it's society that feeds on and encourages the bad behaviour by giving them so much attention (because we've lost sight of what is really important in life). Ive also never understood why actors get paid obscene amounts of money, when a cop, a nurse, a teacher or the people that run the soup kitchens fight for a fair deal. Will is not a bad person, his behaviour was unacceptable and he should be treated no differently to anyone else.

I'm not fascinated with Hollywood and agree that the money made is just insane. I had heard a comment the next day stating that if the slap had not happened the person wouldn't have even known the Academy Awards night had taken place. I enjoy great acting and films but all the awards events could be done without..a stupid scene took place, that's for sure.
@sunshinelife20642 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. I have a firm thinking of why actors, sports players, and absurd people like the Kardashians should be making a lot of money when those that really construct our societies make so little.
@slimdude20112 жыл бұрын
In addition to this comment, movie stars are overpaid, and they're spoiled rotten. That's why they do the things they do because, they think they are above the law, and their money will buy them out of everything.
@leemadden8872 жыл бұрын
I do agree with you but in the scheme of things it’s only a few making insane amounts of money plus we are talking about a private industry. As a nurse in Australia I know as a public servant essential services will never carry huge wages. We just don’t make money. So I understand that. My issue is the pedestal these ordinary people are placed on and there are few repercussions for their negative behaviour. If a fan from the audience or a security guard or anyone other than the actors had slapped Chris they would have been arrested and escorted out of the building. Double standards yet again

I am quite tired of hearing people blame Trump for every ailment they care to think up. What happened to blaming Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or any of the other corrupt politicians? I’m tired of this Trump blaming shit. He has nothing to do with the Academy Awards. Keep the subject where it belongs and move on.
@cuantrail2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's blaming Trump. Trump was just one of the first to go outside of the boundaries of what was considered normal public behavior, so now as more and more people do it the comparison becomes natural. I'm not saying if it's good or bad but just that his style hadn't been seen before.
@cuantrail2 жыл бұрын
@@motherhvac5674 I agree. I think you're looking at it like Hollywood and Clinton vs Trump. But I see it like Hollywood, Clinton, and Trump against the rest of us. They are two sides of the same coin.

If you saw the Golden globe award shows when Ricky Gervais hosted, he roasted Mel Gibson mercilessly. Mel Gibson managed to contain himself and so did all the other celebrities that were named and made fun of. If they can’t take the heat, then they need to stop putting themselves out there and the award shows need to stop using comedians to host the shows. It’s entertainment and roasting has become a part of it.
