Gasquet's forehand was actually good back then.

His forehand is fine to me. The problem is he naturally strikes the ball late and loses court positioning.

@@jamesline5103 Nyope, one of the many reasons Gasquet never reached the heights he could have was that switch to his weird last minute hooking forehand. It is extremely sub average for that level of tennis. He could strike it at the right time but the mechanics of that FH stroke would just nullify it anyway.

Both were 18 back then, in the semi-final of a Masters Series...

When i saw this match, i was sure that it was the beginning of a long contest between Gasquet and Nadal with so many Grand Slams for both of them. They were 18 and nearly at the same level, it was insane. I can't understand what happened to Richard after that, I couldn't imagine that he was making the best results in Master 1000 of his career during that period. After 20 years old, he didn't do anything except two semi finals in US and Wimbledon and Rafa became the best player on clay of all time, how is it possible? Tennis is so weird... It is very similar to the final of the Australian Open in 2008 between Tsonga and Djokovic: Both of them were very young, they were playing the best tennis of the world at the same level but the first one never played like that after this moment and is unable to reach the final of a grand slam and the last one is today one of the greatest records of tennis, why? We can say the same things with Monfils, french malediction ???

there are so many factors that comes in play to make a super player. I'm saying super because all of them are great. So the things that differentiate them apart is sometimes small things. I believe mostly in the head. You need to have a strong mindset. Even I think I can play "ok" tennis when I practice with friends. but soon as I step in to match mode or competition, a stronger player will beat me easily. And we might have a great training session moments earlier.

An idiot coach changed Gasquet's forehand for the worse soon after this.

@@Floodland-bn3ol I came to see this video just for this specific detail , gasquet has an homogenous eye laterality making his main strenght the backhand where he can generate a lot of shoulder rotation resulting in spin and power , on the forehand side he hits it with a lot of spin in my opinion , more than he could handle result in a weak moonbally forehand where as here we can see he is able to shorten his swing and flat it out with a great balance of consistency and aggresion defintly wrong devellopement for his fh

things that blow my mind: 1) they were both 18 here. they look so young but the level of play was so high i didn’t even realize that they were that young 2) gasquet and nadal were the top junior players with gasquet as no. 1 for the most part, everyone thought they were going to be the next biggest rivalry 3) these two really grew up together, playing competitive tennis against each other since 12 4) nadal went on to become one of the greatest tennis but something happened to gasquet and he was never the same again/lost his streak as a gasquet fan since 2013, i’ve never understood what happened, i really want to know because he had (maybe still has?) so much potential :(

Just watched the interview that Gasquet gave to Alize Lim...very different sort of attitude he seems to possess vis-a-vis his sports persona... he says he is not programmed to be no1... that is sad considering his talent... if he had put his mind to the game like Rafa there would have been some good competition ...because he even beat Federer... sad...that he did not care then and does not care now...

Nearly 600 professional wins, 15 titles, 32 finals, 3 masters finals, 3 slam semis, 20 million dollars in prize money. Yes he isn’t nadal (who is one of the two greatest players in tennis history) but he is in no way a screw up, and he has certainly achieved more in his life than you ever have

I mean you literally locked into the wrong sock account lol, you absolutely have no life outside the internet, but don't hate the messenger. You need to accept how much your life sucks first before you can make things better.
