An officer and a gentlemen is one of those rare films that is so much better than the plot makes it. It’s so brilliant, the acting, writing. It feels like a real life story, it’s such a roller coaster

Hollywood says, "Richard Gere and John Travolta are very similar actors. If you can't get us Travolta, we'll settle for Gere." JT was originally cast to play the lead in American Gigolo but had a huge issue with the full-frontal nudity in one scene, so he walked off the set. The director called RG and asked, "Will you do nudity? Can you show up for wardrobe tomorrow? If so, you're hired!" The rest in cinema history.
@suzannek34936 күн бұрын
They are not at all similar actors . They have maybe a similar look and similar type of appeal - but that’s about it . Completely different personalities . When Gere was younger he was a lot more unapproachable . Travolta was the opposite .

Here got American Gigolo because John Travolta, their first choice, walked off the set three days into filming, and his main reason for quitting the picture was appearing nude onscreen (frontally) would have been a very, very poor career move. Here had no such objection to "hanging a rat," so he happily replaced Gere. Big problem was that JT stood just under 6'1" and Gere was about 5'8" os Giorgio Armani and his team had to make up an entirely new wardrobe for RG.

Hollywood has always said, "Get me John Travolta; if you can't, we'll settle for Richard Gere. Both actors have had huge career slumps; RG got Officer and Pretty Woman at times when he desperately needed work; JT got Pulp Fiction only because Quentin T. demanded that the studio let him hire JT. When Stephen King wrote Misery, he had RG in mind and even mentioned him by name. When Misery was adapted to film, James Caan got the lead. When Tom Snyder interviewed King about this, TS asked, "Why didn't Gere get Misery?" and King said, "His name didn't even come up. Nobody at that time was hiring Richard Gere, for whatever reason."
