It's weird how complicated and involved this interview gets about the corner, when the obvious fact is Hammond failed to slow down after the finish line. Guess he lost sight of where the finish line was? Seems the obvious answer.

@@Here_is_Waldo also has to do with physics, and a bit of Clarkson's own words. People can survive crashes when cars (in Hammond's case) roll to a stop, compared to "suddenly becoming stationary - that's what gets you." (Clarkson) Your body can't cope with an impact that stops you immediately.

It was actually revealed that Jeremy, James, and Richard made a pact that should one of them die while filming the show, the other two would open the next episode of the show announcing the death, and after a minute of silence, continued with a comical "anyway.." and soldier on with the show's segment as if nothing had happened. I think it brilliantly shows their bond as a team, as they've mentioned that the reason the rest of the team always left the one that broke down during their trips behind was because they believe so long as the others carry on, the team carries on, and in that way, everybody no matter what, gets to finish their adventure together.

My point being that the Rimac's 'amazing' safety isn't what kept him from dying, it may very well be an exceptionally impressive car in terms of safety, but happenstance and, as you said, the emergency crew on standby played the majority role in ensuring he didn't burn to a crisp in what could have easily been a much bigger tragedy.

andrew evolution, what would you expect to happen? Were you expecting the car to levitate before it hit the ground and fly itself back to the road? Actually no. Fires from car crashes make up of 0.09% of all motor vehicle crashes. Here's your proof. Electric cars are prone to catching fire due to the way lithium reacts with air like most batteries. Petrol cars are generally much safer as they require a petrol leak then a spark, batteries can explode under friction. saferide4kids.com/blog/car-fires-vehicle-submersion/

It did point out á serious issue with the battery technology, despite the relative safety though. And its something we've known for a while now, lithium batteries self ignite when punctured, burn long and hot, and can not be put out until they've run out of fuel (because they re-ignite after a moment). The car was remarkably stucturally sound, but has its own set of problems due to its method of energy storage.

considering the nature of the crash, it's evident that rimac builds a very solid chassis and shell, because the cabin maintained its integrity even after a big drop and going over several times. the fire was to be expected, when you mangle a bunch of high voltage wires it's just going to happen. i do clearly believe that what happened was a mixture of richard reflexively trying to drive the car as if it were NOT super intelligent, and the car taking that reflex as command and sort of over-doing it. all around, however, incredible car, and we're all happy that the Hampster is still with us for more seasons of inane babble and fun road trips.

Matt S This is not a competition about who can survive a crazier crash. You cannot reproduce crashes in the open like that in order to claim that a jeep is safer than anything else. I guarantee you if you took 100 people, put them in a crash that involved rolling 300 feet, not everyone would make it out of that jeep. By design the jeep rolls over much easier and it's not known as having the best crash tests so I don't know why you keep bringing it up. If you'd like to compare, the electric Model X got the highest crash test results of any SUV so again your Jeep example may have been pure luck.

After watching this several times & drawing as much detail as I could from it… it is WELL worth mentioning. Rimac, as a manufacturer & as a man - has my sincere respect. Most any manufacturer I could name, I would FULLY expect to throw a blanket over this and publicly reveal ONLY what a court or some other ‘authority’ would make them reveal. Rimac not only did not do that, they’ve allowed this which seems to be an honest and open discussion of the car’s strengths & the car’s possible weaknesses. It might or might not be the ‘smart’ thing from a business standpoint. I think it IS smart. And I must admit, if I were in the market for an all-electric super car… it would be a Rimac or nothing. I cannot find adequate words to describe how much I appreciate everyone creating this, filming it, and allowing us all to see it. There is a WEALTH of detailed information available here, and it rightfully should increase interest not simply for Hamster but for the Rimac brand as well.

There's all these people now saying that "Rimacs aren't safe," and "Oh look, the car burst into flames after he crashed." True the car may have caught fire after the crash, but that is totally understandable. Most cars, electric or gas powered, would have most likely blown up. The Concept One did a great job of protecting Hammond after he rolled many many times down a steep hill. All that he was left with was a broken leg/knee. That is really not bad at all considering the circumstance. My point is, let's commend the Concept One for keeping Hammond alive instead of talking trash about the car and saying it is unsafe just because it (very understandably) caught fire after the crash.

When you have torque vectoring system, that can control power going to each wheel independently, 100x per sec, Scandinavian flick is impossible - IMHO, except the case, when torque vectoring system profile allows it ;-)

Mate is the name of the guy, it's not pronounced as Meyt it's not same as a mate, it's pronounced as Mathe and Rimac is his surname, Rimac is not pronounced as Rimak but Rimats, so Mathe Rimats. I come from Croatia so I am correcting you guys. Also, while I'm here. I'm pretty sure many of you know the Niko Belic from GTA IV, this time for him, it's not Niko Belik it's Niko Belich because surname Belic is originally written Belić and letter ć is pronounced like " ch " so Niko Belich, all southeastern European surnames ends on ć every single surname. Modrić, Subašić, Nikolić, Ramić, Dolić, Krajinić, Zorić, Vidić and thousands of others, between them Belić, so it's not Belik it's Belich and it's not Rimak, it's Rimats. Rimac is unique surname here tho :D Mathe Rimats and Niko Belich :D Sorry for taking your lovely time

Having a world famous person who's renowned for crashing fast cars total your car is good publicity, but he's smart in appearing in this video as he explains why it occurred. I think Hammond didn't understand the ceo's point though about the speed of steering wheel input in the crash was the problem causing the cars traction control to try to keep up, causing the car to induce oversteer so it was going in the direction the car assumed the driver intended. Sadly in this case, the excess speed meant recovering that was not possible.

So when the tires locked, that wasn't Hammond on the brakes? That was the torque vectoring? It just looks like he went in way too hot and didn't apex the turn well. Shit happens.
@SgtKanyo
@SgtKanyo 7 жыл бұрын
From the video footage, to me it seems like, he went into the corner too fast, weight transfer happened, resulting in snap oversteer and since he was already on the limit of grip, he quite simply slid off the road, since a sliding tyre has less grip then a gripping one.

it is obvious tyres locked. i think it’s car’s fault. tyres shouldn’t lock in any modern car. I don’t see how that car is safe. It can’t handle itself, that’s why they are not producing it anymore, they know it too. I also think Hammond does not seem to sitting there voluntarely.

At age 14 or 15 I was passenger in a VW Golf that rolled over 5 or 6 times landing upside down in a ditch after the driver tried taking a corner late while we were doing at least 60km, he then for some reason pulled the E-Brake to try and correct SMH. I can't imagine how much scarier Richard's accident would have been.

The ending section was a little awkward, but I'm glad it's been kept in there. I think most people could probably see that the car was going a little too quick for that corner. In saying that, I still like Hammond a lot. Well done Rimac CEO for standing his ground on why it happened, and doing so with a very level head.
@curtisbme
@curtisbme 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was funny how the data (and your eyes) made it very clear why he went over the edge but Hammond wouldn't simply take any blame "it understeered for the first time, why did it do that". Instead of "Oh, yeah I see that I was going a lot faster into that corner that time." Apparently accidents happen but driver error doesn't.

That was one well built car. Rolled for 100m after crashing at 300mph, and he came out of it alive. Many cars fall apart if you reverse into a wall while parking. It was a brilliant machine. The crash was a mistake, a bad one but I'm glad that Richard is still with us
