Absolutely no surprise Hammond went on to present Top Gear; the guy had the looks, the charisma, the knowledge and the chat. Also, Defender, GREAT CAR.

We had a two or three over the years, growing up, and were immensely proud of them. We were complete nerds, but our Land Rover was brilliantly cool to be seen in and we didn't know any differently when it comes to "luxury", so its wipe-down military interior was great for kids.

It has a drag coefficient of .69 so best to stay below 65mph for quiet and ok fuel consumption. The 1984 3.5 carb v8 was officially rated at 11.5mpg at 75mph!

Just remember the defender is a brick that uses more fuel at full motorway speeds than round town. The turbo diesel is pretty much the only choice - the carb 3.5 v8 will do less than 12mpg vs 25mpg.

Cool looking beast but let's face it, the Chevy Blazer is a better vehicle in every category and the fact that it cost less up front and less to operate/maintain means the only justifications for owning the Defender are looks and "pedigree." Well, as for me, I'd rather sacrifice the "pedigree" and pocket the cash difference, which is enough to buy a brand new Yamaha WR 250 and enough gasoline to fuel both the Blazer and WR for decades and still have enough left over for spare parts and maintenance. So...

@oldcargeezer7 жыл бұрын
Yep, they are not for everybody you are right there. More of a working vehicle the Defender was never meant to be a car. Ours are used for Mountain Rescue and the "basic people" who drive them have saved quite a few lives this year. The passengers have never complained that the vehicle is "crap"
@sue94327 жыл бұрын
I'm not commenting on reliability or how good they are off road but this show is suggesting the defender as a daily driver. A tractor is good at ploughing fields but I wouldn't want to go to the shops in one
@oldcargeezer7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, you have a point. As l said, it was never designed as a car, it was designed as a working vehicle for farmers. People use them as cars for various reasons, the newer ones are better but still no Audi/BMW etc. Land Rover produced the Discovery and Range Rover for those people who wanted tbe best of both worlds. On paper the Defender makes a terrible car, but l still prefer driving it to my BMW. It's just a thing....and not for everybody.
