Further to my previous post, am now fascinated by derivation of words thanks to the lovely intelligent Susie Dent. I believe the word 'Wow' was invented by another estimable person called Kate Bush circa 1978. Laughing AND learning thanks to these podcasts, Richard.

That was a really Nice Interview. It was really relaxed I would have liked to hear susies thoughts on serial quizzers. Such as David Stainer , Rachael Neiman, And the othrs who seem to appear on just about every tv quiz show

I listened to the first half of this with earphones in as I mowed the lawn, and I misheard a couple of things Susie said. When she was talking about how she's edited to look on the 8/10 Cats version of Countdown, I thought she asked "Do I look stoned...?" instead of "stern". And when she said that the nature of the show was "circular" I had to stop the lawnmower because I was convinced she said "succulent".

Not sure how I missed this. Didn't even know it _existed_ till today. One of the purely incidental, superficial things I like about RHLSTP (RHLSTP!) is seeing people from the glamorous world of movies and television lit with a warm, but otherwise standard wash. You get to see Steve Coogan or Maria Bamford or Susie Dent without the enhancement of TV studio lighting. Someone like Conan O'Brien is a good example of what make-up & especially lighting can do. On his show he looks at least 15 years younger. But Conan doesn't have the kind of ego that demands the crew to light him like that for an OB/remote, so you can see every one of his 55 years. Susie is 53 (May, 2018) but doesn't look 53 on telly or in the Leicester Square Theatre. Now that I think of it, Rich doesn't look 50 either. On another note, at 23:00 Susie talks about her one talent in life being the ability to look up words in the dictionary very quickly. If she looked up humble, she may find a picture of herself beside the entry.

Another question would of been good to ask Susie as Rich touched on it. How difficult it is to do Countdown with the time allotted. So, I've always wondered, and I'm assuming there is no one to stop a person, when the contestant is writing down their letters. Are they making words at the same time, before the clock started or is that not allowed? But then you can't stop someone doing it in their head. Obviously I realise you can't do it with the numbers as you don't know what the final number will be, but I assume they'd work some of the numbers out to give an advantage for when the clock starts.

I've always wanted to see Susie a way from the Countdown Desk, I figured she would be bright and intelligent but going dueling notebooks with Mr. Herring. game set match. this gets a ReWatch because, she's just so darn lovely. and I love watching Richard behaving his best manners. trying to be smart and witty against this Super Giant of an Intellect. and despite his best bludgeons of 'rude words' did not break down the bastions of kindness and refined civility. I'm crushing hard on Susie....and I"m Gay!!...

I've genuinely always wondered if we decided the offensive words were no longer offensive and had the ability to instantly not find them offensive. What would people with tourettes that shout offensive words then do?
@InaudibleWhisper
@InaudibleWhisper 8 жыл бұрын
Be very offensive without using vulgarity. Mocking tragedies, or races, or saying inappropriate things at the wrong time like "bomb" at an airport.
@thekaratekidpartii2169

that is an interesting question. i don't really know anything about tourettes, but from this question one could possibly infer that in a world where nothing was offensive or inappropriate the psychological condition causing those specific symptoms wouldn't exist. that is, the symptoms of the condition are also its cause. like, for example, in an objectively safe world paranoia wouldn't exist because there would be no experience to inspire the psychological state of unreasonable fear or scepticism. using a half-arsed freudian analysis one might suggest that in such a world [where nothing was considered inappropriate behaviour] the superego wouldn't have the social oxygen to develop, which would negate the need for the mediating ego, leaving the id to run amock. i would suggest, therefore, that possibly one of the psychological results of living in a world where inappropriate behaviour does exist and social norms are upheld can be certain individuals, after a childhood trauma concerning embarrassment, develop a complex, a psychological to-and-fro between the superego and the id, resulting in tourettes. NOTE: i have just done some really minimal research and it turns out tourettes isn't strictly related to inappropriate behaviour. that is a different disorder called coprolalia, only occurring in about 10% of sufferers of tourettes. interestingly, i found an article on coprolalia which said: "[coprolalia] drives the individual to constantly think about their coprolalia symptoms--what will i tic? how will i handle it? how can i suppress it? who will laugh and stare? who will run away?--in turn, the hyper focusing will make the coprolalia occur more frequently and intensely. in this way, benign symptoms of coprolalia become malignant due to the stigmatization and judgement of the onlookers... when faced with a person of the opposite sex, the sufferer may quickly think 'i better not say X'. but this cues the brain to conjure words determined GOOD or BAD. . ." etc. this goes a little way to validating my previous comments. of course, there is some neurological aspects and some mixing with other disorders such as OCD [and/or ADD].

Aww, you didn't challenge her on her Countdown "restaurant rule". Where Dent has deemed it acceptable to use terrible English BUT only within the confines of a restaurant. Sound weird? It's true. What other buildings suspend the laws of English? Dent rides roughshod over what is usually a very black and white ruling. Who does she think she is?
