Hey Richard, I'm Richard. Do you find your rather sinewy and light body to be a slight 'advantage' in fencing? Having very similar proportions, I've often found that in striking martial arts opponents of similar height but greater body mass could shrug off my blows (not kicks haha) while their own were something I did my best to avoid. And if that's so, is height a greater 'advantage' or not?

In saber I find people like Lee have it better. Less area to protect, and the range is reduced because of the curve of the blade. My toughest fights are against shorter folks. In rapier I have a clear advantage, tall and thin means my lunge is long and my target low. For power, it's all in a lever. I don't want to go into details, but in my many years I have given plenty of owies to people. Physical strength can increase the power of a blow, but that doesn't always work- more often it's wasted. In wrestling I tend to lose because there, physical power matters much more especially against someone who knows as much as you do.

Looks like Lee is good with any type of blade, even the Belt of Giant Strength +4 (D&D 3.5, DMG p. 248) wasn't enough help to beat him.

Interesting stuff. I used to practice modern sabre fencing. You can clearly see what transferred to modern sabre fencing in this video but with all the differences related to wielding a weapon, which, I presume, is identical in weight and size to original military sabres.

Anyone know what swords are they using? I am trying to find a good steel saber for sparring and possibly contests. I've found some great ones. But most of them are with shall guards and/or small thumbrings which restrict the use of heavily protective gloves.

Nahh, I hit plenty hard when I want to. Physical strength has its value- no doubt. If we get to wrestling, I lose. However, with a sword you have a lever and with it you can move the world. On the, Richard is clearly dying side of things, yes, before I waste away completely, I do need to do... let's make it 10 pushups a day. 50. So many!

Pushups aren't really about strength, its more about how efficient your body is at getting rid of CO2 and getting oxygen to your cells.

Actually that's a HEMA guard often used with longswords known simply as high guard. Though it looks like he only did it for fun.
