The sheriff did it! I met Richard Marx in Toronto in '94 at Much Music headquarters. I asked his opinion on who killed Mary and he asked ME what I thought instead. I told him that I thought the sheriff did it - and he said he was "inclined to agree". He was so kind (and so 4:43 cute!) to a giggly teenaged girl. He made a fan for life! I listened to this song (and many others from that decade) on repeat for many, many years! Not sure where you are, Richard Marx, but thanks for all the great music, sir, and for being kind to a kid!

Thank you so much for this. I've watched the video over and over I thought it was the sheriff as he's taking pictures of them at the beginning, then he pulls up in the car beside her, then at the end Mary is running away and you just see a car at the side of her (it must be the sheriffs car). This song is a masterpiece and I love the way the video and song combine to tell a story.

See these days we have to adapt to the current gen and the trends they do, a lot of songs voluntarily or involuntarily are coming back because the z y gens are using it in some stupid video, I am looking at the positive side atleast that highlights awesome songs like these which otherwise people won't know.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate the amazing age we live in? When this song came out, I would sit in wait, listening to the radio station with my tape recorder (I was 10 at the time). A song comes up that you like and you hit record. Then when it finishes, you hit stop, all the while hoping to catch as little of the radio DJ's voice as possible. Then when you want to listen to a song in your head, you first scramble through your recorded tapes (cassettes) and then forward through it until you get the song. And one day, your tape gets worn out and the song is all twisted, or your player pulls out the tape and you lost your favorite songs. I remember how sad I was when the tape that had this song got destroyed. Now, it is just 1 click on KZbin or Spotify and typing of a word or two (or just "Hey Google" /"Hey Alexa...") and you get to listen to whatever version of whatever song you want to, in its purest quality, without any risks of it getting destroyed in the process.

They are still being written, and still being sung. But they are no longer being marketed. Autotune is what sells now and it’s sad and soulless. But great songwriters still exist and are still perfecting their craft, they are just not so widely distributed by the profit oriented music industry anymore.

Love this song. I don't think Marx ever got the recognition he deserved. He had a lot of hits in the 90's but he's rarely mentioned among the greats of that era. I wore out the cassette I had with this song on it. He also collaborated with some great artists too. Loved Joe Walsh's guitar work on "it don't mean nothin'".

And to think, the great producer, David Foster, told him early on that he wasn’t going to make it, because he didn’t have the star factor. It just spurred Marx on, thank goodness.

Richard's wife once asked him what he was writing and he told her that it was probably the worst thing he'd written and he would dispose of it. She asked him to sing it for her. When Richard had finished, his wife offered her opinion which was that it could be the best he's written so far. Thanks to Richards wife for saving this wonderful classic. It's not only one of the best songs I've heard in my 68 years on this earth but it's a story of human behaviour that we must never excuse but sadly have to accept as being among us until the end of time.

His voice has an ethereal quality, its raspy when he projects and this song has it all....... pain, a sad haunting quality, and a desperation that is both provocative and passionate. I LOVE the melody and the emotional quality of this song and the way he sings it. Its pure perfection.

Absolutely one of the saddest and most haunting songs I have ever come across in my 45 years of life. For some reason, I am drawn to sad, haunting stories and Melodies like this. In my opinion, this is the best song he ever wrote. I remember listening to this when I was back in high school, and feeling like it applied to my life in some respects. I have lived with a disability for virtually my whole life, and I have always felt like an outsider and an outcast, even among the people who should be most accepting and understanding. And so this song has always had a special place in my heart.

@@Rusty-mv1nc and yet, that isolation and separation from the group at-large has benefited my life immensely over the years. I don't rely on others to validate my on feelings of self-worth and value to the world. I have learned to rely on my own good sense and judgment and wisdom, along with accomplishing things to give me that sense of value on purpose. I see others around me who dedicate their lives, so it seems, to molding themselves into what they think everyone around them wants them to be or thinks they should be. It has given me a certain Inner Strength that I have depended on heavily over the course of my life. Friends are a great gift but good friends have been few and far between. I don't need people. I like having them around if they are genuine and good people. But I know that I can also live and be happy without them.

@twosocks19763 жыл бұрын
@@kylienagy8381 if you only knew! If you could comprehend how incredibly difficult and frustrating it is to try to socialize with people and make friends when you are living with poor vision your entire life. If you could only see the indifference, and how people feel they cannot relate to me, or believe that I am really so different from them. Even among my own family, there are those with whom I have no relationship because of conflict over what they believe I can or can't do, or what they think I should or shouldn't be doing. Or, imagine been trying to get a job in that field, only to have the person who is interviewing you tell you outright that they can't imagine how I can do the job because I don't see as well as they do. They imagine that if they had the same loss of vision, they wouldn't be able to function. And so they assume that I can't either. And I never get a chance to prove them wrong. That's the kind of Outkast I'm talking about. But it's not all bad for me. I have an amazing wife who likewise grew up with her own disability, and can relate too much of what I have experienced. I learned, many many years ago, through many difficulties, never to spend my life trying to measure up to someone else's expectations or beliefs of me. The result of such freedom is loneliness. That's what I'm talkin about. But I am grateful for such difficulties in my life, it has forged a certain strength of character that serves me well. And my two little girls, and boy to come, will grow up knowing and learning for themselves the differences are to be celebrated, not avoided or shunned.

This would've made an amazing movie plot, if handled correctly A boy and his mother move to Hazard, Nebraska, and the boy has a hard time growing up, since all the people in the town find him strange, and are prejudiced towards him. It's not until years later he meets a woman who sees the man he truly is, and they fall in love. One night she disappeares, and everyone flocks to the assumption that the man did it, due to his reputation as being seen as suspicious. He goes through hell and back to confront the killer, cuts his hair, changes his name, leaves town for a while, then realizes he needs to find the man responsible for the crime, who ultimately ends up being the sheriff who questioned him years earlier about the killing. The sheriff is eventually brought to justice, and the man now has a clear conscience, and ultimately stays in Hazard, where Mary's spirit lives for eternity

Juber M :. A lot of artists these days don't know how to write good songs like this one.

My father recently told me that I loved this song when I was around three years old. Apparently I liked most of the music he listened to and kept on dancing, but this song must have been my favorite, he said. I'm 33 now and happy that he got me to “rediscover“ this beautiful song. Thanks, Papa! :-)

Eu musica é linda e ao mesmo tempo triste e me faz refletir muitas coisas. E sem dúvida voz do Richard é linda e envolvente. Ouço esta música sempre não sei explicar mas ela me encoraja pra vida. ❤🎵❤🌻🇧🇷
