The sheriff did it! I met Richard Marx in Toronto in '94 at Much Music headquarters. I asked his opinion on who killed Mary and he asked ME what I thought instead. I told him that I thought the sheriff did it - and he said he was "inclined to agree". He was so kind (and so 4:43 cute!) to a giggly teenaged girl. He made a fan for life! I listened to this song (and many others from that decade) on repeat for many, many years! Not sure where you are, Richard Marx, but thanks for all the great music, sir, and for being kind to a kid!

Thank you so much for this. I've watched the video over and over I thought it was the sheriff as he's taking pictures of them at the beginning, then he pulls up in the car beside her, then at the end Mary is running away and you just see a car at the side of her (it must be the sheriffs car). This song is a masterpiece and I love the way the video and song combine to tell a story.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate the amazing age we live in? When this song came out, I would sit in wait, listening to the radio station with my tape recorder (I was 10 at the time). A song comes up that you like and you hit record. Then when it finishes, you hit stop, all the while hoping to catch as little of the radio DJ's voice as possible. Then when you want to listen to a song in your head, you first scramble through your recorded tapes (cassettes) and then forward through it until you get the song. And one day, your tape gets worn out and the song is all twisted, or your player pulls out the tape and you lost your favorite songs. I remember how sad I was when the tape that had this song got destroyed. Now, it is just 1 click on KZbin or Spotify and typing of a word or two (or just "Hey Google" /"Hey Alexa...") and you get to listen to whatever version of whatever song you want to, in its purest quality, without any risks of it getting destroyed in the process.

I wore out the cassette I had with this song on it. He also collaborated with some great artists too. Loved Joe Walsh's guitar work on "it don't mean nothin'".

I was six or seven when I first heard this song on the radio, and I think it's the first song I really had a genuine "adult" emotional reaction to. Even as a tiny l'il first grader I recognized something hauntingly beautiful about this song.
@twosocks19763 жыл бұрын
Absolutely one of the saddest and most haunting songs I have ever come across in my 45 years of life. For some reason, I am drawn to sad, haunting stories and Melodies like this. In my opinion, this is the best song he ever wrote. I remember listening to this when I was back in high school, and feeling like it applied to my life in some respects. I have lived with a disability for virtually my whole life, and I have always felt like an outsider and an outcast, even among the people who should be most accepting and understanding. And so this song has always had a special place in my heart.
@Rusty-mv1nc3 жыл бұрын
I hear you. "Prejudiced eyes" resonates with my own experiences, its hard when you don't fit with the norm.
@twosocks19763 жыл бұрын
@@Rusty-mv1nc and yet, that isolation and separation from the group at-large has benefited my life immensely over the years. I don't rely on others to validate my on feelings of self-worth and value to the world. I have learned to rely on my own good sense and judgment and wisdom, along with accomplishing things to give me that sense of value on purpose. I see others around me who dedicate their lives, so it seems, to molding themselves into what they think everyone around them wants them to be or thinks they should be. It has given me a certain Inner Strength that I have depended on heavily over the course of my life. Friends are a great gift but good friends have been few and far between. I don't need people. I like having them around if they are genuine and good people. But I know that I can also live and be happy without them.
@kylienagy83813 жыл бұрын
You are NOT an outcast. You are a human being. Please know that you are desperately needed in this world..
@twosocks19763 жыл бұрын
@@kylienagy8381 if you only knew! If you could comprehend how incredibly difficult and frustrating it is to try to socialize with people and make friends when you are living with poor vision your entire life. If you could only see the indifference, and how people feel they cannot relate to me, or believe that I am really so different from them. Even among my own family, there are those with whom I have no relationship because of conflict over what they believe I can or can't do, or what they think I should or shouldn't be doing. Or, imagine been trying to get a job in that field, only to have the person who is interviewing you tell you outright that they can't imagine how I can do the job because I don't see as well as they do. They imagine that if they had the same loss of vision, they wouldn't be able to function. And so they assume that I can't either. And I never get a chance to prove them wrong. That's the kind of Outkast I'm talking about. But it's not all bad for me. I have an amazing wife who likewise grew up with her own disability, and can relate too much of what I have experienced. I learned, many many years ago, through many difficulties, never to spend my life trying to measure up to someone else's expectations or beliefs of me. The result of such freedom is loneliness. That's what I'm talkin about. But I am grateful for such difficulties in my life, it has forged a certain strength of character that serves me well. And my two little girls, and boy to come, will grow up knowing and learning for themselves the differences are to be celebrated, not avoided or shunned.

My girlfriend and I at the time got free tickets to see Richard Marx around the summer of 93. I was never a fan and more of a Judas Priest and Iron Maiden type fan. But it was free and the venue was very intimate. The tickets ended up being front row and I have to admit I was not only blown away but it was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. I was particularly impressed by his extensive and skilled band. Those were fun times.
