I wrote this song when I was nineteen, with Jeremy Lubbock and David Foster. It was a big hit in the UK years ago for Cliff Richard and I had never sung it live myself, so at our London show at Shepherd's Bush in 2010 I thought we'd give it a go. ~ Richard

I was at this show! I grew up listening to Richard Marx because of my brothers and they treated me to tickets and flights from Norway for my birthday that year, and it was such an amazing experience. Nostalgic and beautiful to be there with one of my brothers and see my childhood hero ☺️

Wow! I was listening to the original with David Foster & Olivia Newton-John, and it led me here. I have always been a HUGE fan of Richard Marx. In had no idea he covered this though. This is a great example of the difference between a songwriter and a singer. A singer can sing songs written by others and it takes quite a lot of work for them to sing them from the heart. Sitting there in a very personal and intimate setting opening his heart and expressing a deep and powerful message because this song like all the others are a personal expression of events in his life. Singers sing and songwriters express their soul through their lyrics and music. Thank you Richard!

Gypsydragongal, I had to do some research, but the song was written in 1982 by David Foster, Jeremy Lubbock, and yes, Mr. Richard Marx as well. It was released on an album from David Foster titled, "Best Of Me" in Nov., 1983, and in that version of the song David sang it solo. Then it was released again on David Foster's self titled album, "David Foster," in 1986, as a duet, with Olivia Newton John, and it is that version that most people have come to know, because it was a hit song, and reached #6 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts! Hope that answers your question. 🙂

@@lamarravery4094 Yes, all three wrote the song. Richard Marx was only 19 at the time that he wrote it, so that would have been in 1982 or 1983. David Foster and the recently-departed Olivia Newton-John had a huge hit with this song in 1986 as a duet and the video is on KZbin. That is the version most familiar to many. Cliff Richard had a hit with it in the United Kingdom first. Many have covered the song. The old stuff is the best stuff when it comes to music, and this is a classic 1980s ballad that blows over most of the current hits.

Seen the video on VH1 back in the day. I was a big David Foster fan, so I know all that and I know Marx wrote a few songs for other artists before he became a solo artist in 1987. The re-recording as a duet in 1986 with Olivia Newton-John made it to #6 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and #80 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. So, it did pretty well as a duet. As I recall, it had received extensive radio airplay. Wikiwand is a new part of Wikipedia. The 1989 Cliff Richard version went to #2 on the UK chart and stayed there for 7 weeks. Several others have recorded it since. Michael Buble, Kenny Rogers, and Barry Manilow have been among those who have covered the song. David Foster had originally recorded "The Best Of Me" as a solo version in November 1983 and that was the title of his debut album of which that was a part. By 1985, he had become more famous because of "St. Elmo's Fire" and its soundtrack, both the instrumental version with the saxophone at the end and the lyrical duet that many are not aware had been released as well. Personally, they both were excellent and his later movie soundtracks, such as "The Bodyguard" in 1992, hit musical gold as well.

I became a Foster fan when I was following Chicago's early 80s success and found out that he was the mastermind behind that and his fingerprints were all over pop music in the 80s.
