Seeing this one of a Richard Petty kit really brings back a happy childhood memory for me. I was 6 years old in 1979 and I would go to my grandma's on Sunday afternoons after church. My Aunt Shirley and Uncle Lester ( we called him L.D. ) The initials stood for Lester Duvall. His full name was Lester Duvall Callahan. Uncle L.D. and I were very close and every Sunday afternoons if he wasn't on the road ( he was a trucker ) he would watch NASCAR. His favorite driver was Darrell Waltrip, but my favorite driver was in fact Richard Petty. Uncle L.D. would call me if he knew I was hanging out at my grandma's house and he would say "Hey Todd you gotta come over today because Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip are racing today !" Uncle L.D. and Aunt Shirley lived right behind my grandma's house at the time so off I'd go to watch Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip with good ol Uncle L.D. And Aunt Shirley would make us sandwiches and potato chips and tea. Richard Petty won at Bristol I think it was and Darrell Waltrip came in second. But then the next Sunday was better for L D. Because Darrell Waltrip won. I don't have my Uncle L.D. anymore. He passed away a few years ago but I sure miss watching the races with him. I have a cousin named Marvin who used to race on dirt tracks and he owns one in Alabama. Uncle L.D. and my dad helped build Marvin's first race car. I hope my dad and Uncle L D. are building a race car and driving it on a race track in heaven right now. I would also like to see a Darrell Waltrip Mountain Dew model kit because that's what I remember from that period in time. I'd build bother the Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip kits and display them side by side. Can't wait to see the Richard Petty Charger !

I used to love building models in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. Even entered 4-H with models. I got frustrated over model kits going to mostly 1/25 and paints going to Acrylic, department stores quit carrying model kits, and hobby stores closed. I kind of miss it, but other hobbies took its place. You do these a little differently than I did, but you do a great job.

Awesome build! Those classic colors pop and it looks like you matched them spot on. I’m looking forward to building an entire NASCAR collection, one car from each era, and this will most definitely be one of them. This is about the era when they were transitioning from cars that still resembled and still had components from production cars to cars that were/are ground up dedicated race cars not sharing a panel or bolt from the car’s production counterpart.

Thanks man! Salvinos bought all the old Monogram stock car molds from Revell USA so we'll be seeing those come back some day, with improved molds and parts!
@hpiguy5 жыл бұрын
Not quite. Revell and Monogram were both US companies for a very very long time. Revell bought Monogram 30+ years ago. Revell Germany was a part of Revell for a long time as well, their European arm of modeling. Revell was closed when Hobbico (their parent company) went bankrupt last year. A group of European investors bought Revell Germany and Revell and moved almost all operations to Revell Germany last year. Revell USA was formed and is an off shoot of Revell Germany to create and distribute kits in the US. Revell USA still owns the Mongram brand today, and now Revell USA and Revell Germany and Monogram are all owned by European investors.

I remember the 1979 Daytona 500, "There's a fight" Bobby and Cale going at after Cale and Donnie get into a wreck. This put NASCAR on the map as it was the first race to be covered flag to flag on tv. It didn't hurt the whole east coast was snowed in too. Very nice! :-) you can tell I haven't modeled in a great while, as I've never heard of JR models. And I would occasionally buy a modelers mag. To sort of try to keep up with new and different bodies or styles. Blue Is B3. 73 Basin street blue. And the red was changed many times but was STP dayglow red among a Dodge Pr4 that came extremely close to the STP color. Then there was the red, orange transition.
