Richard Lee Petty (born July 2, 1937), nicknamed "The King," is an American former stock car racing driver who raced from 1958 to 1992 in the former NASCAR Grand National and Winston Cup Series (now called the NASCAR Cup Series), most notably driving the No. 43 Plymouth/Pontiac for Petty Enterprises. He was the first driver to win the Cup Series championship seven times (a record now tied with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson),[1] while also winning a record 200 races during his career,[1] including the Daytona 500 a record seven times, and a record 27 races[1] (10 of them consecutively) in the 1967 season alone.[2] Statistically, he is the most accomplished driver in the history of the sport, and is one of the most respected figures in motorsports as a whole. Petty remains very active in the sport as both a NASCAR team owner (Richard Petty Motorsports) in the Cup Series, and owner of Petty's Garage (car restoration and modification shop) in Level Cross, North Carolina.
During his 5 decade career, Petty collected a record number of poles (127) and over 700 Top 10 finishes in his record 1,184 starts, including 513 consecutive starts from 1971 to 1989. Petty was the only driver to ever win in his 500th race start, until Matt Kenseth joined him in 2013. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010.[3] Petty is a second-generation driver. His father, Lee Petty, won the first Daytona 500 in 1959 and was also a three-time NASCAR champion.
His son Kyle was also a NASCAR driver. His grandson, Adam (Kyle's son), was killed in a practice crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on May 12, 2000, five weeks after Lee's death. Adam's brother Austin works on day-to-day operations of the Victory Junction Gang Camp, a Hole in the Wall Gang Camp established by the Pettys after Adam's death. Petty married Lynda Owens in 1958. She died on March 25, 2014 at her home in Level Cross, North Carolina at age 72, after a long battle with cancer.[4][5] They had four children-Kyle Petty, Sharon Petty-Farlow, Lisa Petty-Luck, and Rebecca Petty-Moffit.[6] The family resides in Petty's home town of Level Cross, North Carolina and operates Richard Petty Motorsports.
The Richard Petty Museum was formerly in nearby Randleman, North Carolina but moved back to its original location in March 2014. He has also made an appearance in Cars as Strip Weathers, a character partially based on himself, where in the movie, the character is looking forward to winning his last race before retirement.
The 1971-74 Charger based cars were campaigned in NASCAR, with Buddy Baker, Bobby Isaac, Dave Marcis, and Richard Petty scoring several wins. Richard Petty won 35 races with this body style between 1972 and 1977 as NASCAR allowed the Chargers to run a few years longer than normal, as Chrysler did not have anything else to replace it. A 1974 bodied Charger driven by Neil Bonnett scored Dodge's last NASCAR victory (until 2001) at the December 1977 Los Angeles Times 500. Richard Petty has proclaimed this body style as his favorite car that he ran during his career because it was balanced.
For the 1973 model year, Chargers received new sheet metal (though at first glance only the rear roof "C-Pillars" looked different) and were in fact longer, wider, and slightly taller than the 1971-72 cars. Also new were vertically slatted taillights and new grilles. Hidden headlights were dropped, even as an option. The 318 was still standard, with the 340 (available only on the Rallye), 360 (2-barrel only), 400 (low power 2-barrel/single exhaust and high performance 4-barrel/dual exhaust) and 440 remaining as options. The SE models had a new roof treatment that had a "triple opera window" surrounded by a canopy-style vinyl roof. All other models had a new quarter window treatment, discontinuing its AMC Gremlin-style window in favor of a more conventional design. Total sales this year were around 108,000 units, the highest ever for the 1971-74 Charger generation, though more than 60 percent of the cars had the non-high performance engines. The 1973 Chargers, and all Chrysler products, were equipped with 5 mph bumpers, front and rear.

Petty Enterprises obviously had to sign off on the rights for JR Salvinos to make the kit. So someone in his company saw at least the prototype of the model kit before signing off. Whether or not Richard himself saw it may be in question, but this might be something a bit personal for him so I'd like to think he did.

As for the pieces you couldn't identify, those are actually head rests that Petty used in some cars. If you stare at the hexagon in the right orientation, after a time, you'll begin to see Richard Petty's initials (with a stylized "R"). Thought that was a super neat touch! I'm a little late to the show, but found your video very helpful for my Petty Charger build! Agree that the decals are the way to go, saves a lot of time and headaches. Just wanted to mention that if you ever go back to retouch, in my experience, Tamiya fluorescent red is a bit dark and MCW's neon vermillion is almost a perfect match, though it does require a clearcoat. Finally, I went from zero builds the last few years, (I was mainly collecting), to at least ten this year, all due mostly to your videos. They helped me stop worrying about mistakes and just go out and do it "my way"! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

I think the MPC kit was the same year. The new one looks like better quality. All I know is I had one helluva time getting one. It took my hobby shop a couple months. They'd say it will be there 3x and it didn't come in 3x. It was already molded in Petty Blue I bought a can of the florescent red or orange whatever and taped off the body and hood. I was going with the current '76 paint scheme. I didn't use any primer and went on a little too heavy and it looked bad. I tried to sand it and messed up something. Luckily there was another kit might have been his Roadrunner but the body was the same and molded in blue also. I got it right the 2nd time and it looked good. In person it looks more orange than red. I think it has something to do with the film used but it's weird how it looks to the naked eye and then on tv or on photos. Like it's two totally different colors. When Ricky Rudd drove the #10 Tide Chevrolet, the front of the car was bright ass orange but on tv it looked much flatter. But Petty's car really stood out. I could easily spot it in turn 9 at Riverside when I was in turn 5 over a mile away!

I wonder why they didn't just print everything onto the large red decals in the first place. I guess for those who want to paint the red instead? IDK but that's my only "I wish" niggle with this. Looks nice!

Glue is near impossible to get off glass without buffing and polishing and that only works sometimes. Hence why I use Mod Podge as I show in many videos and speak about, it simply wipes off easily before it dries. Almost no one prints paper catalogs anymore, simply too expensive and products change all the time so they'd have to reprint and re-mail them monthly. Their website is open 24-7. Modelroundup.com

your spay booth looks pretty mucked up...does it have a fan pulling the fumes? How do you vent it and are you worried about fumes causing an explosion? I'm trying to figure out a booth for my modeling. Any info would be appreciated.
@hpiguy

It's used to catch overspray with the fan and filter. I don't worry on fumes as I wear a fume respirator. I just need it to catch all the overspray paint.

Every decal is different. At least 10 seconds in warm water, some take up to a minute. Powerslides brand release very quickly.

How do you get the paint to stick to the chrome mine always is super delicate and just falls off
@gabordubniczki1936
@gabordubniczki1936 3 жыл бұрын
1. Clean it with soapy water 2. Use black Rustoleum primer, it will stick even on moist surfaces no problem 3. If nothing else works use bleach or oven degreaser to strip the chrome off
@hpiguy
@hpiguy 3 жыл бұрын
A shot of black primer will usually hold quite well for model purposes. You can always strip it with Super Clean or any of the other common chemicals like bleach, etc.

Hi Chris! I think you're being way too hard on yourself over the decals. Those things are MASSIVE and quite honestly I think the build is extremely attractive. Unless your viewers made an old AMT Romulan Warbird with that giant eagle/hawk decal on the underside, these have to be the biggest one-piece decals I've ever seen. If ya made this again, you'd know what you were up against, so this was a great pathfinder build for anyone who wants to work on this armed with your information. Cheers!
