Richard Pryor actually came to my house when I was 10 in 1977. (The guy who produced some of his comedy albums was an old family friend and just showed up with him one day). My brother,12, and I knew exactly who he was, but my 7 year old cousin didn't. We weren't allowed to stay in the room with him because, although soft-spoken, RP would NOT stop cursing 😆. We got our little cousin to get an album signed for us and we were all allowed to come out to say goodbye. As he was leaving, RP called us three of the ugliest kids he'd ever seen. My brother and I knew he was just messing with us (knowing he was a comedian), but I don't know how my cousin took that 😳). Fifteen years later, I got my revenge. That same family friend invited me to RP's birthday party (at RP's house), and I kept a straight face as I told him that his comment had scarred me, wrecked my confidence, and had driven me to therapy because he was the first celebrity I'd ever met. He was SO SORRY 🥺. He held both my hands in his and apologized profusely, sincerely explaining that he's a comedian (like everyone on earth didn't know that 😂). Finally, I fell out laughing, I told him that I was just yanking his chain, and we giggled together. That was some night. The guest list for that party was... whew!

Wow! Cool!!
@mariegraves6102Ай бұрын
Cool! That would have blown my mind as a kid! Being shy, I'm pretty sure I would have hid until he left. As a teen, I did get to see Redd Foxx entertain the troops overseas. RP is the "gold standard" for comedians because it was also biting social commentary--you were going to laugh, but when you got done you were seriously thinking about what he said.
@KB-xp6dqАй бұрын
@mariegraves6102 I think I'm just not wired up to be starstruck. But I did chicken out on attempting to meet the Jacksons when I was about 8. That SAME family friend lived around the corner from their house in Encino, and his kids offered to take us over there (they knew the Jackson kids; not many black people in that neighborhood lol). My brother and I couldn't muster up the nerve though. For all I know, they weren't even in town, but I kicked myself for years for being too shy to even try. EDIT: Believe me or don't (I couldn't care less), but I actually got to meet MJ (and spend 5 days at Neverland) in 2002. Chris Tucker and I became friends before he was famous and we called ourselves "working" there; we accomplished next to nothing lol. Obviously, that got me over kicking myself for not going to the Hayvenhurst estate when I was 8 😁.

C I was on vacation in Winnipeg, Canada, my first visit. It was January 1977, I was 17 years old and staying with my two elder brothers. We were at the time partying downstairs in the basement of their home, listening to my brothers vinyl collection. Thats when for the first time in my life I heard Richard Pryor comedy album, I never knew anything about Richard Pryor till then. The album my brother introduced me to was called"The ni**%r crazy" I was totally shocked by this title, but I loved every moment of this amazing, funniest stuff I ever heard. For me Richard Pryor was the greatest Alchemist of comedy. The Grand wizard of humour. He took truthism and the predictability of mankind, added his super wizard humour to it, made us laugh till our eyes were watering, and our jaws ache. His ability was to bring people together, black, white, rich, poor. His comedy always took us to a special place. A place where I wish I could stay forever. RIP Mr. Richard Pryor.

Wow it's so good to see this. I have an interesting story about Richard Pryor Jr. When I was a little boy, I would go down to Va. to spend time with my grandmother and grandfather and at the time my grandmother worked in the cafeteria at the nearby Naval shipyard. It was common for people to visit there home for Sunday dinner, so it wasn't unusual to welcome a new face to the table. One evening she said that a friend would be joining us, a young man who was stationed far from home his name was Richard. To cut to the chase this young man turned out to be the son of the greatest comedian ever Richard Pryor! He was such a nice guy he was so down to earth he never played up the fact that his dad was one of the world's most popular entertainers of the time. He joined us for dinner a few times. Throughout the years I've been blessed with the opportunity to meet a few celebrities and politicians due to proximity, but this particular experience always holds a special place. Good to see this. Thank you both for sharing. Way to go Tamron.
