Unfortunately, this video and some of the comments display why it's so difficult for people to seek professional help with mental health issues. He lost his father during his formative years, lost several close friends and family members, and, at the very least, had an unhealthy relationship with food. Think about this, he wrote “Dance With My Father” at least 40 years after his father passed. Trauma is a real thing, folks.

The problem with being famous for a talent is that people will become obsessed with who you are dating and if you don't want to share that (which you don't have to) folks will call you "secretive" and "very private". Luther Vandross was a vivid example of "a clown's life" and "the show most go on". In "A Clown's Life", it is said that the clown shows up to do his performance, the clown makes everyone laugh and even get involved in some funny games. When the performance is over, the clown leaves a group of happy and satisfied people to go deal with his personal problems, skeletons in the closet and some personal demons and in many cases the clown won't even give a sincere, happy smile when is out of the costume and makeup. In "The Show Must Go On", no matter what the performer is going through, no matter what bad news the performer receives, before or during the show ... the performer will go on stage and give the fans the best performance, without the fans noticing any change of character. Luther Vandross would give his best in every presentation, but no one knew his feelings and struggles.

🤔 *I disagree.* The world would NOT have loved him, because it was a totally different world back then. All of this public fluidity, pronouns, sexual preferences, gender choosing, and alphabet categories did not exist in those days, especially in the Black community. There were plenty of gay people in the industry, but they were all closeted on purpose. Did you see what happened to Ellen D. when she forced her way out? It wasn’t pretty. Luther knew what he was doing. His main audience are Black women, but they hate to find out about Black men being gay. They never would’ve supported songs that they knew were towards men. 🤷🏾♂️

@MrKellyELA All of the things you described existed back then it just wasn't in the mainstream. Everyone has pronouns he/she etc are pronouns. So I'm not being obtuse yes trans people exist too and they were told to be quiet about it even if they got hormones and surgery. The LGBT isn't a new acronym and nor are any of the letters. My grandfather himself told who is strate talked to me about how gay people would be on Christopher street and in the castro. The issue is people had to hide it even if people knew (famous or not) Hence gay clubs, gatherings and neighborhoods. It was about making strate people feel comfortable, presenting strate and not getting yo ass beat. I don't disagree he would of been shunned but it was an unspoken about things not a new thing by any stretch of the imagination.

He made huge sacrifices. His emotional battles created issues which led to an early death. .....To barely make it to 50. The older I get, I see it more. Suffering will cause physical self damage. His music heals the soul, but now knowing some of his story, he's sent another important message- love thy authentic self too. Luther was a precious gem, that the world will never see again. May He Rest In Peace🌿🌼

Jennifer Holliday and Luther Vandross became good friends, and they had fun together with FOOD. Jenny said they would literally fly out to other countries just to try out restaurants. Jennifer said Luther kind of got mad when she lost weight and of course she didn't understand at first why would he get mad, then she realized Luther thought he also lost a friend. Eventually they made up. I wish they recorded something on the studio.

I also suffer from extreme loneliness. This was a bit of an eye opener. If no one chooses to love you back, there’s really nothing you can do, can you? You can try to self love all day, but nothing will ever beat love from someone else reminding you that you’re valid as a human being

“Are you gonna be, say you’re gonna be, are you gonna be, say you’re gonna be, are you gonna be, say you’re gonna be…well, well…well, well. Still in love, so in love, still in love…with me….” One of my absolute favorite songs of his “A House is Not a Home”. CLASSIC! Also, the “Christians” in the comments disparaging this man for what may or may not have been his sexual preference are deplorable. We ALL sin. And if y’all feel that homosexuality is a sin, I ask you whether or not you’ve EVER committed fornication? Because THAT is a sin. And Jehovah God does NOT pick and choose which sins are “worse” than other sins. Check yourselves before you try to judge others. To the creator of this video, great job! New subscriber here.

I have noticed a lot of people in the music industry always seems to never be truly content or happy. It's very sad . They are searching for something always. Luther longed for love but did her truly love himself. It seems like ultimately the love he wanted he never was able to find . It important to find the love of God and within yourself .
