11:58 Whitney Bennett, then just 16, needed 478 stitches to her head. Ramirez tried to strangle her with a telephone cord but when electric sparks flew off he was scared away and she was left barely alive. Also, petition to stop naming crazy sadistic killers ominous sounding names like the Night Stalker. Some serial killers actually enjoy the notoriety and attention they get for crime, and from a certain perspective it might even sound like a cool name to them, further feeding into their ego. I have a feeling it would get on Ramirez's nerves if he was called Stinky Breath instead of the Night Stalker.

Duuuude! My time to shine (kinda): my mom worked with Richard's mom at Tony Lama in ELP. I would be shipped off to LA every holiday to spend time with family. You can imagine my mom's fear in the 80s when she'd send me off to a city being stalked by a serial killer. I don't remember much but she's told me that she'd beg family members to remember to lock all the doors and windows. Richard struck within a few miles of my family's homes. Imagine my mom's surprise when she found out her co-worker's son was the one stalking LA. Shocked is an understatement.

To this very day if an image of Richard Ramirez is shown on TV for whatever reason, my aunt immediately genuflects and prays, true story. I remember my mother telling me how literally the entire neighborhood made sure to shut all their windows and lock their doors. And it was a particularly hot season which made things insufferable. Thank you for this video. Lots of chilling memories.

@@mjwbulich thats not entirely true, there are still active serial killers out there (even in US theres like 10 active that havent been caught yet). Yeah. That Netflix doc was incredible. When I first watched it I could only get through the first 2 parts because it was that disturbing. I don't know if I've ever seen a serial killer and the two "Super Star Cops" (Frank Salerno, a seasoned pro in his prime, and a young man named Gil Carillo with unnatural skill and a dogged persistence who was a regular street cop until Salerno found out about him and took him on as his partner) use LUCK as much as skill to both evade and hunt down. If totally left to their own devices, they would have caught Ramirez much sooner, but they were stymied by their own police force. As serial killers go, I'd call R.R's complete randomness (whether planned or simply drug-addled) brilliant. Of course, his own sloppiness shows no brilliance, but whatever the case it worked. I firmly believe that if it were any other detectives (at that time) his spree would have gone on much longer. To me, these two men were decades ahead of the rest of their counterparts. Salerno was already a "heavy hitter" before he'd been assigned to the Night Stalker, as he was the dude that "cracked" and caught the Hillside Stranglers. Luck and hard work were the keys to both the killer and the cops. This was like a horror movie played out OFF the screen. Both fascinating and horrifying. \m/
