you just gotta love Richard. In spite of all the heinous things he's done and the ruthlessness he's capable of, he in not inherently an evil person. He just wants to feel like he belongs somewhere; matters to someone. That kind of desperation for closeness is just heartbreaking, especially because out of all the characters on this show, he is the closest thing to noble that any among this bunch will get. He's like a broken angel within a world of scoundrels.

I love how Richard’s arc went from having no one, to having jimmy and Angela, then having that family taken away from him. Then he spends the next two seasons honoring jimmys friendship and legacy by looking after his son Tommy. His story was an ode to the only family he ever had. “Would you fight for me”? Little did he know that Richard would go above and beyond fighting to keep jimmys memory alive through Tommy Darmody.

Sadly he was right when he said No matter what you do nothing changes. He did all that fighting to give Tommy a good life and just look where he ended up.

The last thing he says to Tommy was when he hugs him and says "I love you" and then kisses his wife goodbye. Richard came SO very close to a happy ending.

and then the show fucked it all up by not only having harrow make a 'mistake' which he would've never made, they kill him off, and somehow Tommy winds up growing up to be just like his father which deafeated the whole entire point of Tommy being left with Richards love (i forget her name) and her father who Richard turned back into an honorable man. I don't understand how Tommy wound up turning bad like his dad when he was set up to not become his dad. The end of the show should've been Harrow and his family together raising Tommy with a son or daughter of their own.

It was bad. & I find it hard to believe the character of Richard wouldn't have gone after Nucky for Jimmy's death. However my understanding is Michael Pitt was so insufferable on set that the producers / writers had to get rid of him despite the character being entertaining and his portrayal very good. The scene where Jimmy dies kinda reminds me of Friends, when Joey's character is killed off in 'Day of our Lifes". His performance was so flat and unconvincing. It was like he had given up and was just trying to get it over with.

Actually,I think these two (his heroin-fueled depression and his flashback to his mother) are not entirely connected. I think he feels guilt for what happened to his estranged wife. think he sees her as an innocent person-despite her affairs-and didn't want Tommy to go through life without an actual mother.His flashback to his mother was the catalyst to show why he 'dropped out' (read as expelled) of Princeton and enlisted in the army,where he wanted to die and didn't expect to survive the war.

@cbarrett34 Well, they really weren't the lead characters, to tell the truth. They were more of a tragic youth couple in an ensemble cast, if anything. I would have liked to see more of Angela, her family background, etc. I wonder: if Richard had went with Jimmy on his final night, would things have ended differently? Wonder what will happen to him now?

Ten years ago this was the only television show i followed before getting rid of teLIEvision altogether. As soon as they killed Micheal Pitt off i stopped watching. He was this whole show and i heard it went downhill when he was gone.

he did that because he felt guilty. im not saying he didnt had any felligns for her, but at the end both angela and jimmy used eachother instead to hide under the fantacy of a normal and happy family instead of facing wath they really wanted. of course Jimmy's thing was really creepy and wrong in every level

These two were the real tragic highlight of the story. Amongst all the shit-house gangster backstabbing for power and prestige Jimmy and Richard had honour between them, despite their circumstances.

@propheci Also, this show has a Black-and-Grey morality: there are no white knights here. Everybody has dirt on them. It's really hard to root for anyone here since they're all up to some relatively shady shit. One of the main reasons I liked it. But I think they may have shown their cards a bit prematurely; it'll be hard for them to top this season without resorting to pure shock value, like the killing of Angela.

Jimmy was flawed and easily led.he did exactly as the commadore and his goons asked,without question.he pissed off a dangerous enemy in manny,and he agreed to have nucky killed even though he never wanted it.if he wanted mucous dead he would have got Richard to do the job.his death was in keeping with the realism of the show,I think there are enough great characters to carry another season.is like to see more lucky and his little buddy,and we know harrow will be seeing more screen time .5 days ;

I quit watching when Richard died cause that just reeked of the writers reading too much Hemingway in high school, but I mean Richard did make things right in the end

Why was he still holding the gun when he saw it was Richard. I always felt that Jimmy was sort of afraid of Richard because he never knew what he was really thinking and feeling.

I refer people to this scene when I talk about how uncaring Jimmy was about his family. He didn't know if there was a threat or not at the door, and he prepared himself for it - while letting his unarmed, innocent, wife answer. If anything, this completely judges his character as a person. I can't imagine a man allowing his defenseless wife to answer the door while he hides in a corner with a gun. Love Jimmy all you want - but he showed his true colors here.
