• Richard Rorty on John ...
"Philosophical ideas are confined to one percent of the population and they tend to be cosmopolites who are not easily identified with their country....Dewey's dreams of participatory democracy will never come true." Richard Rorty talks about John Dewey.

Rorty has give us a deeply insightful and informed summary of Dewey's attitudes and influence on American intellectual and cultural life, along with a realistic assessment of the limitations of social democracy and the enterprise of philosophy.

I love that there's a picture of Emerson, who according to Harold Bloom invented the American Mind, for bad and for good

"Dewey's dreams of participatory democracy will never come true," but we can sit a little closer to each other.

It's refreshing to me to see a person say so little of what anyone wants to hear. When he says something it is only because it seems to be true to him, that's very valuable. It may well be unrealistically optimistic to think that pure democracy will every happen, or that if it did it would actually result in more human well-being. It may not be expedient for those who desire change, but is it true? Truth might be dismal, nature makes no guarantees. I would much rather he state his position clearly, than attempt to inspire. THAT would have been boring.

Might be the last "new" thing by Rorty I'll ever hear.

this is great. Currently researching Black Mountain College and found my way here through the youtube algorithm. recs on where to start with Dewey?
@americanphilosopher

Hi Hope! Will we ever divine the mysteries of the algorithm? Perhaps not but we get to enjoy the illusion of synchronicity because of it. Anyway, I'm glad you found your way here. Dewey is what we might call a "full service philosopher", meaning he wrote deeply on just about everything, so it depends on what you're interested in. If you are interested in education, an obvious place to start is Democracy and Education. If metaphysics is your thing, or just a general introduction to his general philosophy, many would suggest Experience and Nature, but that's a bit woolly to my taste. I would suggest, instead, Human Nature and Conduct. If you like political philosophy, The Public and its Problems, is good. Or, a general critique of the culture: Individualism, Old and New. Truly John Dewey contains multitudes (apologies to Whitman). Jim Campbell wrote a handy book called Understanding John Dewey. Anyway, good luck, and thanks for watching!

If interested in his moral philosophy, his views on human nature, society, naturalism, Darwin…try Gouinlock’s anthology on The Moral Writings…I find it to be a good panoramic selection.

Richard Rorty sounds, especially at the end, like an ideological conservative, not a wise-old-philosopher... Why should we bow to the states so-called 'experts'? He's either disingenuous or naive...
