Richard Ross is known for his“Skeptical Reefkeeping” article series, his groundbreaking work with cephalopod husbandry, his entertaining and informative talks, and for managing the ambitious 212,000 gallon reef tank in the Steinhart Aquarium in the California Academy of Sciences. “It’s so great. I get to work on what interests me in a variety of ways; I write and speak about the practical philosophy of aquarium keeping and animal welfare in the hobby press, and I get to publish in academic journals. I get to practice the fascinating craft of aquarium keeping on a daily basis, as well as participate in various kinds of field work like coral sexual reproduction. Through it all, I have the ongoing challenge and honor of working with incredible species like pygmy seahorses, unique cephalopods, ghost pipefish and more”.
Richard was presented with the MASNA Aquarist of the Year award in 2015, and his work has been covered by Scientific American, National Geographic, Penn’s Sunday School, NPR’s Science Friday, Discovery News and Fox News.

I love listening to Richard, he is such an awesome dude that I'm happy to have known since the moment I started this hobby some 20 years ago. He does hit on something that I noticed after visiting a coral show, and that's the whole "if they can't make money from it...." lots of "OG" corals I just want to populate my tank with, but man you can't find them anymore because they aren't grown out by someone with a website and forced into insane color combinations. That said I do have Green Slimer and I still think it's super awesome :)

This would be a true advancement in the hobby. Making this information available and repeatable could change the course of many reef tanks.

@@mwpfishbreeder surprisingly when you look at the BRS MACNA 2019 talks Playlist the thumbs up/down ratio is atrocious, I wonder what people dislike so much about these talks and why they don't take the time to explain it in the comments...

I think as a hobbyist I would construct my own spawning-box. It would be a nano cube, mayhaps connected to a bigger tank for stability. It would be in a light-tight container, with lighting controlled by my own controller, probably a raspberry pi 4, which would conveniently also have an HD camera trained on the corals for recording. That way I'd only rarely have to darken off the whole room. Temperature control is a bit tricky, because I haven't found a cheap and reliable solution to set the temperature programmatically yet. Unfortunately, readily packaged thermostat heaters often aren't programmable (or affordable), and making your own is dicy because both under- and over-temperature will kill things.

You can't change the light like this through Echotec, you need to get the Apex module to control the lights, correct?

Not sure the message of go do it it's easy, go collect or encourage wild collection which is proven to be very low mortality rate is the right thing here...what you doing is not easily done by hobbyist.. These kind of rationales are part of the problem in my openion..
