@@PGAC22 Well all of that is true except for the fact the Lionheart was not just the King of England... He was also the Overlord of Cyprus, Duke of Aquatine and Count of Anjou. Going on Crusade was still a worthy endeavor since the Holy Land had fallen out of Christian control. The King of France, Phillip Augustus also committed to a crusade and didn't even bother. Making him look very unfavorable among his noble and people. Yes, the Lionheart was captured and ransomed but the Duke of Austria. However, this was totally against protocol for a Christian to hold another Christian especially one who was a king on crusade which was akin to spiritual pilgrimage by many even the Pope. Later, the Duke of Austria and the King of France were both threatened with excommunication for their conspiracy against the Lionheart. Fair point, the Lionheart was only in for a grand total of 6 months. However, he didn't speak English but his mother did and she did most of the running the country along with the archbishop under the Lionheart's direction. Also, he saved his own sister.

That was very exciting. Didn't realize how involved the Conquest of Cyprus was. It truly was a remarkable feat of brilliance. Didn't fully realize that Cyprus was ruled by a full-blown traitor.

It's true we hear a lot about now conquests but in reality everything was big back then based on how much went into just getting from place to place and supplying the army.

Reminds me of Julius Caesar. When returning to the continent from Britain a couple of his ships had been blown off course and landed several miles away from the main roman army. The soldiers were surrounded by hostile Gauls and they were soon fighting for their lives. Caesar decided to march to the rescue of his soldiers, marching through hostile territory. They arrived and inflicted heavy casualties on the Gauls and rescued his men. From that day on, Caesar's Legions were fiercely loyal to their General.

Richard the Lionheart is the kind of man you either love for his charisma, intelligence, wit, moral code, and confidence or cockiness, or hate for the same qualities saying he's faking those qualities. But the man had his own band he wrote music and poems for. He reminds me of Ulysses Grant or of Robert Duvalls character in apocalypse now. He knew exactly who he was. So few of us ever do
@adamwee3822 жыл бұрын
I like how you mention how good King Richard was at administration, for some reason people always say that he was a great commander and warrior but a bad king. Which obviously isn't true. He was a skilled diplomat which is clear from his dealings with the king of France and even Saladin himself.

Thank you for this vid, as always , very well done and informative. King Richard I the Lionheart is my fav crusader king of England. He always was in the thick of the battle like no other and led from the front. He Never lost a battle and the more backstabbing, plotting against him by the jealous King Philip II of France, the more the Lionheart outshon him and emerged victorious.

I like your videos because you use the right term "Byzantine" for the 12th century empire. The empire had changed from fully Roman to fully Hellenic during the period you describe, so the term Eastern Roman Empire is not proper after 9th century even as early as the 8th AD. I think a most accurate term would be the "Eastern GrecoRoman Empire" to describe both early and late periods.
