Real Crusades History

Күн бұрын

The film Kingdom of Heaven made Saladin and Baldwin the Leper King famous to the moviegoing public. But what's the true history behind the movie? We'll find out today! In 1176, Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem, turned fifteen, and fully assumed power as king. His first act was to launch a military campaign against his powerful neighbor, Saladin, who ruled the vast Ayyubid Empire stretching from Egypt to Syria. The timing wasn't good for Saladin, who wanted to focus on reducing his Zengid rivals in Syria. Baldwin's ascension forced Saladin to focus on the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Both of these great rulers would meet in combat in 1177 at the Battle of Montigsard, one of the greatest clashes of the Crusades. Here, Baldwin the Leper King was assisted by the Knights Templar, and Raynald of Chatillon. The crusader forces were vastly outnumbered, but they were determined. This wouldn't be the last time Saladin and Baldwin would meet. in 1179, while the Templars were attempting to raise a castle at Jacob's Ford, the Sultan and the Leper would exchange blows again at the Battle of Marj Ayun. In this documentary, we continue looking at the life of Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem.

An excellent part 2. If I may nit pick a small bit: The loss of Le Chastellet (Jacob´s Ford), wasn´t really that big of a reverse for Baldwin IV. Yes, the grand castle was destroyed, and therefore couldn´t do what it was intended to do, but its loss only really reestablished the status quo, and didn´t result in the loss of any territory. And, as you mentioned, the outbreak of an epidemic meant that Saladin couldn´t really take advantage of his victory. Again, that was nit picking. Great video, and looking forward to part 3.

Some argue the loss of Chastelet, a barely operational fortress (William of Tyre incorrectly stated it was finished) was a precursor to Hattin. Chastelet was located at a gateway to the East.
@declankrebs4073
@declankrebs4073 Жыл бұрын
@@deem7478 I can see why they would argue that. It wasn´t far away from the Horns of Hattin either. That said, the next few years did nothing to suggest that the kingdom faced an inevitable defeat. Le Chastellet proved to be Saladin´s last major victory over King Baldwin IV.

Didn't the movie put a different spin on all this? I thought the movie portrayed Baldwin and Saladin as sort of as enemies but very respectful of each other. It was the Templars that they portrayed as the bad guys and war like and the ones who broke the uneasy peace between the Muslims and the Christians . From what I can remember.
@RealCrusadesHistory
@RealCrusadesHistory Жыл бұрын
Yes, the movie is devoid of any legitimate historical content. It's essentially a fantasy using the names of real historical figures. There's no evidence that Baldwin IV and Saladin had sort of a "respectful" relationship, only that they fought each other fiercely for years. Also, everybody was raiding, not just the Templars and Raynald of Chatillon. Raids on villages and farmlands were a reality in medieval warfare, and Saladin did this just as often as anyone else.

In fact they were very mistrust by all the different powerhouse. We are talking about a time were regular permanent army doesn't exist. In peace time, a lord doesn't have any army except security forces and his knights. They all used mercenary, and with different alliances manage to form real army. While in the same time, different order like templar or hospitaliers developp themself with permanent army, sometimes more powerful than the local forces. That's exactly what happened in france, with the decision of french king to accuse them of heretism and burn them all. They could have represented a real treat for our feodal world conception.

Lovely video. Baldwin IV was clearly a very strategic minded fellow battling and hindering Saladin as much as possible to mitigate his attacks. That Raymond III was passed over was clearly a huge blow. Perhaps not as bellicose or strategic he clearly knew what he was doing unlike Guy of Lousinon. Paul Magdilino has argued that Manuel I's invasion of Anatolia against Iconium was part of this Christian conflict to thwart the surround Islamic powers. I would be interested to learn what Baldwin's counterpart Bohemond III.

I think it's funny when Christians pillage and burn it's called barbaric, but when Muslims do it they get called great and honorable. Salahuddin couldn't even beat anyone his own level as a Commander. He lost to the Lepar King and ran and tried Fighting the Lionheart and ran. Richard even beat him with less soldiers. So Salahuddin wasn't really that great and honorable. He gets way overrated if we compare him to his counter parts he wasn't really all that good of a Commander.

The religious battle between Saladdin of the Moslem warriors and King Baldwin of England for their version of Christianity with their Knight armies. How King Baldwin managed to transport troops from England to Middle East was such a feat. So it's not only Alexander the Great who can muster long distance travel with his troops to reach India. This battle shows me how tactics and counter tactics works in battle by the help of concealed spies spying on enemy positions and movements. Well learned.

A bit random but what was a fake knight called, someone who basically stole a horse and armor and could at least function like a knight? I feel like i remember you using a term for it "____ knight". any and all help is appreciated.
@happymradrian
@happymradrian Жыл бұрын
He has referred to a "knight errant" , or a "wandering knight", but those aren't fake knights, just ones without any land/holdings or positions in court. For horsemen that weren't part of the nobility, the term could be a simple "horseman" or "cavalryman" as those could also be armoured. It'd be extremely rare for someone to just steal a horse and armour - the armour probably wouldn't fit, was hard to maintain, the horses (each knight would have at least 2 to 3) would be extremely expensive and difficult to maintain, and you'd still have to know how to ride, fight and read which were all rare skills. A horse or armour thief would likely just try to sell whatever they stole.

3:47 "Saladin's correspondence from this time is filled with complaints of his difficulties in transporting men and provisions between Syria and Egypt." Is there a video on this channel for this matter in particular? If not, I think it would be interesting. Something like the exact itinerary Saladin needed to use to move his men from Egypt to Syria and vice versa, and how often he chose just to force his way through Transjordan, instead. I also wonder if it would have been feasible for the crusaders to cut off Saladin's communication between Egypt and Syria (for example, by taking Gerasa, Bostra, Azrak and Gurayat). I have the idea that the crusaders may have made a major strategic mistake in failing to capitalize on their position to disrupt Saladins ability to wage war in Syria with Egyptian resources. What do you think? Thanks.

A territorial edge is important as shown by this battle scenario were Saladdin and his troops though defeated in several battles, again able to reverse the tide in a particular middle east battle where he gathered troops from his allied kingdoms in the middle east.😮
