He was a capable man in every area. Had he devoted himself to the administration of his realm, he could have done quite a lot of good. One of Richard's best qualities is appointing men of merit and capability to positions of power and administration. He was also more freehanded than his father who was a control freak.

(Short story time here) When I was in kindergarten I went to a costume ball dressed as Richard the Lionheart. Of course, I didn't know who he was, my parents bought me the costume and told me it belonged to a brave king, whose heart was that of a lion. I remember being so happy and proud, I just kept saying over and over again that I am Richard the Lionheart! Since then, his image always sticked with me and I like to think that somewhere, far away from here, I made him smile

It just amazes me at the lives these kings lead during that time. Imagine all of the lands he’s traveled and the seas he crossed. This kingdoms he’s ruled and the battles he’s lost. King Richard led a life of battle, adventure and brutality. It’s hard not romanticize his life’s journey given the chaotic and primitive way of life during those early years.

Concerning the subject, I think that king Richard created a myth that is as such beyond any historiographical evaluation because it gives imagination something to deal with for a whole life. I really enjoy this biography on Richard 1, the Lion heart. They do miss the point about the execution of the garrison at Acre. Muslims did not blame Richard but Muslim records show that even in the Muslim eyes the fault was Saladin. He agreed to a settlement that he wouldn’t fulfill. From then on Saladin had a problem garrisoning a city. The soldiers didn’t want to be captured and be sacrificed since Saladin was not trustworthy in their eyes. This is an important fact that was skipped over. But it’s a fun biography.

A king dying of an easily treatable wound by current standards, the king's brother dying of dysentery which can be easily treated today even in third world countries, constant wars etc. I can see why it seems great to have lived in the high middle ages because it has been romanticized by chroniclers and historians, but believe me, you would not like to be a regular person living in these times. So, the major understandings that I take from this very very interesting and informative documentary is that a) if we are not in an alliance with France we are fighting against them and once we finish fighting them we a ruling them until we are allies again b) the situation in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions is the same today as it was in King Richards crusader years and c) the whole of this era and to the present day are eerily similar, War then Peace and War again. I don’t think we will ever see true peace in the world. Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of historical timeline and the life of “King Richard the original Lion-heart” maybe on day the three lions will roar again and we will win something more precious than territory……………… The Jules Remy (excuse spelling) trophy (and yes I know it isn’t the Jules Remy trophy anymore, I just wanted the French connotation. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 P.S The fact that King Richard took little to no interest in the fiscal and political running of his kingdom just proves, to me at least, that we are NOT “a nation of shopkeepers” far from it, we ARE a nation of “warriors”, WHEN and IF we need to be.

I really enjoyed this rendition of accurate history. But who the fuck cares about his unconfirmed sexuality. That made a weird moment in this whole broadcast which made me wanna turn it off, I didn’t and was not disappointed. Did they mention any other figure of history’s apparent sexuality, nope.

What if “Lionheart “ Didn’t go to the Crusades. I would bet that France wouldn’t have taken the lands . And the Magna Carta didn’t get written. John was a Weak Man. I think Richard would have been a Awesome Strong King like his Father

👑King Richard I the Lionheart ⚔ was England's Bravest King. He led from the front, fought in the thick of every battle and siege, he even killed enemies while being sick and carried by 2 men and firing his crossbow picking off saracens. He never lost a battle, conquered Messina in 1 day, conquered Cyprus and captured the Emperor, defeated Saladin in every single battle and siege. Freed many Christians captives, saved a contingent of Templars after being surrounded. There is no way that rumor of gay is true, first off its told by his enemies, a fact that King Philip II of France was his enemy rather than his lover , he plotted and schemed and backstabbed Richard any time he could during the crusade and was jealouse of him. He plotted with his brother John to take his throne but when Richard arrived in France he defeated Philip in Freteval and Gisors and punished him for everything. Richard wasn't a saint but still he was a great Catholic and there is nothing to prove he was gay. Its utter nonsense.

@@stefanvella9807 I never said that Richard didn't beat Phillip, greater than Charlamange, Agustus in battles. The fact was that Richard beggared his realm which allow Phillip to conquer nearly all of Plantagenets France. Richard was a great commander but a horrible king. Phillip was a mediocre general, but the best king of the Middle Ages.

@@arpandey698 Philip was brave and ruled well but he also was a backstabber during the 3rd crusade. Richard's life was cut short , i'm sure he didn't plan to die and if he lived he would have not been that bad i think. There are alot of rumors invented by his enemies. But King Philip during the crusade always was jealous and plotted and schemed against Richard any chance he got, also conspired with his brother John to take his throne, which he forgave. He was the bravest King of the middle ages. At Jaffa he rode the whole lenght of the saracen army ALONE daring anyone and none came forth says Beha al din, Saladin's secretary and friend. he was admired and feared by both friend and foe.

It's an existential irony that the European crusaders who failed in the medieval era eventually conquered the Holy and in 1918 by way of France and Britain sharing Ottoman Eastern Empire by 1922.

Seems like Richard and Alexander had several things in common. When one is world class at something and fate puts one in a position to excel at that something many such people go overboard excelling at that one thing rather than putting their energies towards activities in which they might be mediocre at best. Recall when Michael Jordan took a break from basketball to play baseball? The only beneficiaries of that decision were the Houston Rockets. Mike returned to the Bulls and they wrecked the rest of the NBA for a few more years.
