song list: Cooksferry Queen; Bathsheba Smiles; The Uninhabited Man; Persuasion; Two- Faced Love; Al Bowllys' in Heaven; I Want To See the Bright Lights Tonite; The Sights and Sounds of Londontown; Tear- Stained Letter. [Edit, 2019, 2 years later: well, it works now, I was able to combine it all into a full song list]......hmm, I can't seem to edit this additional song info all onto or into one combined sequential list for some reason.... I am getting an error notification. "An error has occurred"; that's probably the story of my entire life...

RIP Pete Zorn. One hell of a nice guy in addition to being a super multi-instrumentalist who added such a nice touch to RT's performances as well as Danny Thompson on that electrified upright. This particular band iteration (and I've seen many) is one of the best. Mike Jerome is a killer drummer. Richard and son Teddy make great harmonies together.

I completely agree. I was reading some reviews of the recent live releases from the 80’s and people were saying that band was the best backing RT ever had, which made me wonder if they missed this tour or something.

Karl Sharicz…….I just stumbled across this recording tonight and delighted of course to see the very great Danny Thompson at work. Just a little moment of his musical biography - shortly before leaving the Alexis Korner Blues Band in 1967 to form Pentangle, he did a simultaneous stint in between 1964 and 1966 with my (drummer) dad’s band The Mike Scott Trio which also featured Kenny Wheeler (trumpet) and Bobby Wellins (sax). They often performed at a place called the Lilliput Hall in Ipswich. Mike was incredibly proud of having worked with Danny and saw a predictably great career which did indeed flourish!

One of the posters says that Richard sounds "Knopfleresque", now let's get this right! It's Mark who is "Thompsonesque"!Mark has always played down how much he was influenced by Richard, but he must have been very aware of his output.Indeed, there is an interview with Matk there where the interviewer virtually accuses Mark of ripping off Richard.The use of a strat, the out of phase sound, the finger style approach . Richard uses both fingerstyle and hybrid picking.
@honeychurchgipsy6
@honeychurchgipsy6 6 жыл бұрын
musik102 - well said - also, if you look on Wiki you'll see that Knopfler wasn't even playing seriously when Richard was already established. Richard Thompson had been playing and song writing for around 15 years before Dire Straits became well known. Of course it is possible that they developed similar styles independently, but, since the folk connections are there in both I doubt it. If you think about the lyrics of songs like Romeo and Juliet they aren't typical pop songs - they tell stories like a folk song - and Knopfler is now singing trad. Irish folk songs. Love both but Richard wins the crown owing to his huge range of song writing styles and the fact that he is a virtuoso on both the electric and the acoustic guitar.

Knopfler is very good but not in RT’s unique league.
@IndigoJo
@IndigoJo 4 жыл бұрын
@@willylewis1 IMHO Knopfler's songwriting suffered after the Straits got huge in the 80s. The quality of songwriting on most of the songs off Brothers in Arms doesn't come close to the quality on any of the previous albums. Also, his live recordings especially after the original line-up fragmented often mangled the songs while Thompson's live recordings are often an improvement on the studio recordings (especially the late 80s live recordings versus the over-produced studio albums - musicians he was comfortable with rather than LA studio sessioneers). Thompson never got so successful that he was divorced from the real world. That said, when the Straits were big, RT and Linda were just coming out of their religious phase and their most recent two albums (First Light and Sunnyvista) hadn't done very well and they had been dropped. None of their albums had charted. RT really only hit his stride with Shoot Out the Lights. I wouldn't be surprised if some of RT's electric guitar style was influenced by Knopfler but he has a much wider palette. Their acoustic playing is very different.
@IndigoJo
@IndigoJo 4 жыл бұрын
Plus: Pete Zorn's sax playing adds muscle to Thompson's performances, much as on the 1983 live recordings (see songs like Shoot Out the Lights from that show). It's not at all out of place on a heavy rock track like Two Faced Love. On the later Straits shows (as with the On The Night live CD) the sax breaks are often cheesy, except on the songs that were written for them (like Your Latest Trick).

Thanks so much for posting this! Featuring music from one of my all time favourite albums. What a line up. Having Pete Zorn in your band was like having 2 extra musicians in one, sadly missed. Michael Jerome is always a joy to watch and hear. Messrs Thompson related or otherwise, provide a wealth of talent. I think Teddy's voice has echoes of his mother in timbre, and he is also a superb songwriter.

It isn't a stretch to say that RT is probably THEE MOST talented musician in his field. Incredible songwriting, phenomenal guitarist, and going strong long after his peers have slowed down. Not to mention having the ability to wear a beret and still look masculine. (No easy trick.) Perhaps he cut a deal with Ole' Scratch at the crossroads one night.

I think the opposite to a crossroads deal. Think he has been practicing Sufism for most of his adult life. What we see might be what studying mysticism and spirituality contributes to one's life. Just a quess.

Konig Corvus - have you watched the Live in Providence 2004 video here on KZbin - it has some of Richard's finest electric guitar work - check out the amazing Gethsemene. There are also vids. of him doing Take Care of the Road you Choose and live recordings (audio only unfortunately) of live performances of Calvary Cross - most amazing guitar solo ever played IMO - one version is 13 minutes long.

This is a fantastic show. There's also show from Providence RI in 2004 which you can find on YT that is equally good. What I haven't yet seen is any video of the band that included Clive Gregson and Christine Collister (as well as John Kirkpatrick, and Pat Donaldson on bass; Dave Mattacks on drums?). I saw that band configuration several times in the mid to late 80's (notably at the Bottom Line in NYC) and they were excellent. Richard and Clive really ripped it up with dueling guitar solos!
@IndigoJo
@IndigoJo 4 жыл бұрын
There's a CD recently released from the late 80s (Live at Rock City) with the line-up: Gregson, Collister, Kirkpatrick, McFarlane, Conway. Very good sound quality and decent song selection. I prefer it to the More Guitar live album which has more of the then-recent filler tracks (Don't Tempt Me for example) and fewer classics.
