The fact that someone can write so many great songs for so long, sing so well, and be perhaps the best ever on his instrument is almost miraculous. That he can do this all while being relatively unknown outside of a devoted cult following is baffling.

Richard Thompson reaches the parts other guitarists cannot reach.

Every time I hear RT I think " THAT guitar - WOW", it get's me every time and his song lyrics really are magnificent !

That solo is a prayer. If Thompson;s faith gives him musical insights like that I'm not going to question it.

Richard Thompson is an astounding musician; he writes the best songs and plays the guitar sublimely. I saw him play this number with a 5 piece band at the Royal Festival Hall on the Dream Attic tour in 2010. They played virtually the whole album at the start of the concert then returned to play 90 minutes of his standards. Just awesome.

I saw the "same show" in Dallas, TX. A small place w/ great acoustics. It was ggggggggreat! Saw this 3 piece, as well a a couple of other shows. The one you described was probably the best.

Yes, absolutely.

I saw the same show in Dallas, TX, probably much later in the tour. I have seen Thompson 4 times, including the Electric Trio. The Dream Attic Tour was the best.

No question, Michael Jerome is spectacular. I love his style. It fits the trio very well.

Today I heard someone refer to this solo as a "mad algorithm of emotion" - indeed!

No one comes near Richard Thompsons guitar playing.

He's the best. I don't think there's anyone who is as much of a dual-threat ( acoustic and electric player), and the fact that he's such a brilliant songwriter, really one of the best ever, makes his lack of recognition even more criminal.

@@paulburgess8909 Been following RT since the 1960s. Attended 4 concerts, 1 acoustic, 3 with band. But he doesn`t play too often here in Norway :) He is, in my opinion a complete artist. I sat next to him on a flight from Trondheim to Bergen and he was ever so nice, talking a lot about his music and life. A real gentle person. And I play RT every day, sitting in my home office. His playing on the Fairport Convention recording of Who knows where the time goes is so perfectly done, matching Sandy Denny`s vocal in a way I never have heard, nor will hear. I asked RT about this recording and he answered "it just came out that way", but wouldn`t take much credit, it was Sandy Denny`s song. A great, but humble man.

I was standing just to the right of the guy with the camera (bdball69?). Amazing outdoor show, a highlight of the 2013 Iowa Arts Festival. RT brought a solid set to couple of thousand people in downtown Iowa City. Many had probably never heard of him. I chatted with him at the merch table afterward. I can't count all the times I've seen him perform -- pretty much every time he's been in Illinois, Wisconsin, or Iowa since 1970.

Hi Bill! Yep, it was us who shot the video. I wasn't going to do video, since some people tend to frown on that kind of thing, but since I figured this might be the only chance I would ever have to see him in person I changed my mind. And I'm glad I did. I envy that you got to chat with him. I didn't even know there was a merch table. If he's ever in Iowa again, I will definitely go.
