For the guitarists, he's playing in Drop-D tuning with a capo on the 5th fret.

Richard Thompson is on of the finest guitar players, and song writers in the world. His vocal style is unique, and the emotion in every performance is staggering. Wonderful as ever.

A brilliant guitarplayer, but also a wonderful vocalist.I`ve listened to RT since the late 60`s. Still gives me goose bumps listening to his songs. Seen him 5 times live, just wonderful, with or without band. I guess RT will be me until I pass away, even played in my funeral. Thank God for Richard Thompson.

This song has matured in the composer for many years. There are so many details in his voice of deep experience that makes it truly personal -like Richard is the only one who know the story behind the words. Thanks! -Tom

whoops, I meant to write: it also has a lovely, spare, sparse, bare-bones guitar instrumental called "Dargai" tacked on to it, with barely a pause between the two songs. It's a good record overall as early Thompson records go....

This old house is falling down around my ears Im drowning in the river of my tears When all my will is gone you hold me sway I need you at the dimming of the day You pulled me like the moon pulls on the tide You know just where I keep my better side What days have come to keep us far apart A broken promise or a broken heart Now all the bonny birds have wheeled away I need you at the dimming of the day Come the night youre only what I want Come the night you could be my confidant I see you on the street in company Why dont you come and ease your mind with me Im living for the night we steal away I need you at the dimming of the day I need you at the dimming of the day

Good God what a master on the guitar. Unfortunately, I really wish he'd kept more to the less "jazzy" singing. Put David Gilmour's "feeling" and voice to this guitar and I think my allergies might start acting up. David Gilmour's version is nothing short of beautiful, but hearing this gorgeous guitar is just stunning.

The definitive version. While Bonnie Raitt does a really good job and it is perhaps more polished and melodic this one carries the emotion of the experience behind the lyrics. I also love the folksiness of it. Didn’t like the Gilmour cover at all.

For me he's a great guitar player but not really a good singer. He was fine harmonising to Linda's voice which is majestic, but on his own? Not for me. I remember sitting in front of him at Chelmsford Folk Club in around 1977 playing an old Fender sunburst strat, it was amazing.
