Great song. Don’t know why it is, but I can never embrace RT’s album as soon as it’s released. It has has to sit there and age, before I finally enjoy it. Yes, like fine wine. He is truly a legend.

The coda is one of RT's greatest solos, which is indeed saying something. It seemingly encompasses almost all of his origin genres, changing measure to measure, shape-shifting from Celtic runs to rockabilly snap and so on and so forth. Not mere virtuosity, either. Makes sense musically for the duration. Just awesome. Great overall song, too, with the sort of evocative, poetic, open-to- interpretation lyrics Richard writes when he is in top form. As an American, this is pretty much the song I need to hear right now. Cheers.

Haunting, yes that's what this song ist. Just incredible how the song is building up towards one of his greatest guitar solos, what a climax. Don't miss this one, you'd regret it.

Today is the first day I’ve heard of your name, oddly your name was audible in my dream this morning, I googled your name and you’re the only one that I had found, I have dreams sometimes audible, I called them dreams from God ,yours is the only one that I have a direct, only one name to my search, I must need to listen to your music, God bless, or a message that God loves you either one.

I’m still buzzing from the trio’s Cambridge gig a couple of nights ago. How can this man be so creative and full of energy fifty years after I first fell in love with his songs and his playing? If you can, go and see this tour!
@moonbeamchaos4 жыл бұрын
Marshlander du Marais I’m envious that you saw him last year. He used to play in Atlanta regularly at the Variety Playhouse, an “intimate” venue - former neighborhood cinema, where tickets were within reach of his many local fans. During intermission he would sell his CDs in the lobby, do autographs, chat briefly. And the acoustics were such that even in the worst seats I could feel that he was singing to me alone. Feel, not imagine; I’m not nuts. My friends from New Orleans would come up to see him with us. Now he plays in huge venues for hideously expensive tickets that are snapped up by scalpers and resold for even more hideous prices. You have to pay more ($50 or so?) for a Meet and Greet ticket. We never missed an opportunity to see him until he “went big.” Now it’s just KZbin and records that we buy because we love him and wish we hadn’t been priced out of the joy of seeing him and hearing him in live performance. I really miss him. I suppose that’s the price WE pay for his success.
@marshlanderdumarais2644 жыл бұрын
moonbeamchaos Yes, I understand that. I try to buy from an artist’s own website shop where I can or wait to buy from their merch stall at a gig. As a musician myself I know the difference it makes when any third party takes a cut. The last time I looked at RT’s shop I was rather surprised at some of what was being sold for additional money. To be fair, I can’t really blame him for trying to make up for the leaner times, but as a long-time follower it still stings and I guess it’s my problem that it looks undignified. Those of us not in the same league are having a very lean time. I have had all my work cancelled this year and my last paid job was in January. I’ve not been entitled to any bailout money either. C’est la vie.

An Original approach as usual from Richard Thompson as his guitar and voice distils a dark shadow of foreboding hanging over.

Another great one! The first Richard Thompson song I ever heard was "Vincent Black Lightning", sort of by happy accident, through a Clive Cussler book. A character "borrows" a Vincent Black Shadow, and I Googled it, but one of the results was a video of "Vincent Black Lightning". So, thanks to Richard and Clive both!

Thompson exemplifies what many singer-songwriters don't seem to engage in. The construction of the song, the arrangement, how all the pieces come together and fit tightly, seamlessly. This tune is not legendary like "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" but it is nonetheless a masterful piece of songwriting. Thompson voice, of course, doesn't fail him. His guitar work is impeccable. The band is dynamic. No matter how good any performer is -- to sound like this is magical. And how many years has Richard been at this? (Even worked with the late genius Nick Drake).

Brilliantly captures this moment here in the U.S. Michael Jerome and Taras Prodaniuk drive it. About midway I thought 'this needs more bagpipe'........then RT took that solo.... never mind about the bagpipes. I can't wait to see them do this 'live'...it's gonna be an epic bloodbath of rhythm and electric guitar. Thanks for keeping it real, Richard Thompson.

Wowza, brilliant, brilliant! One of the few folk-rockers still at height of powers. I don't think even Neil Young is making music this powerful. Rock is a young man's game, but RT shows that it can benefit from amturity.

A bit boring maybe but think it's a grower. Will be powerful live with electric band..
@kevinjohnbetts6 жыл бұрын
I think the dynamics of the track will be more effective in full CD quality audio. It wouldn't be the first time a piece has sounded a bit flat and lifeless here on KZbin only to come alive on album. RT hasn't written many great hooks over the last couple of decades though and this track doesn't buck that trend.
@Pwecko6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. It has a brooding quality, like waiting for a storm. I love it.
@kevinjohnbetts6 жыл бұрын
It is a much more compelling track when listened to in full CD quality. It has a dark, brooding, feel to it which I like. I still think the hook could be stronger but that doesn't make it a bad song by any means.
